New ways to complete the game

First time out of the vault
Hey there, all. I'm a first-time poster, but a long time fan of the Fallout world. I'm sitting here at my desk at my shitty temp job and fantasizing about starting a new game of Fallout 2 and actually finishing it this time, and I'm really intrigued by the thread about finishing the game with a Diplomat-type character.

I've played thru the game fully probably three different times, and partially at least six. Every time I restart it I end up playing the same type of character I always do: A charismatic sniper.

It's boring. The thought of running thru the underground cave by the Den punching rats YET AGAIN is not a pretty one.

But I hear there are different ways to finish the game...?

A non-fighter would be really interesting to me, a Diplomat type, perhaps one good at Science (so I can pick up all those interesting tidbits about the backstory from the computers in Vault City). Also, someone who kicks butt at Unarmed combat, has a high Sneak, and a really high Outdoorsman skill, maybe...

You guys got any suggestions for playing through the game as anything but a generically charismatic ranged-combat badass?

What would be involved in a good Diplomat-type? High Charisma and Speech, that's for sure, maybe some serious Science? It's been a while since I played so I can't remember all the details about the way things work...

Use the edit button, it exists for a reason.

Basically, almost any character that seems viable to you is viable. No-one can really tell you how to play the game, it's really about finding a way for yourself to play the game. Any of the options you mentioned are valid.

Also, moving to G&T

Okay, thanks for the reply. What are some of the fun characters you have played? Any really good ones come to mind?

Diplomat opens up a lot of dialogue and facts that you'd normally not uncover. It opens up a whole new part of the game.

There's only one every player has definitely got to try at least once, tho': Intelligence 1. Try it. Seriously.

God, now you've got me excited. I think I'm going to go home and start TWO new games, one for a hyper-intelligent scientifically-oriented charismatic love machine (finally I'll take the Kama Sutra Master perk!), and the other for a bovine-brained, super-strong, unarmed combat master.

Nice! Thanks!

Later:
Okay, this is freakin' hard. I started a new character in Fallout and all my instincts are telling me to fight. Running away and letting Ian take care of all the business is hard to do.

And I forget: in FO1, is it possible to upgrade your party members armor?

Later still: I've just made a new character in Fallout 2, a smarty-pants babe named Squid with Str 3, Per 3, En 3, Cha 10, Int 10, Ag 6, and Luck 5. My tag skills are Speech, Science, and Outdoorsman, and I took the special attributes of Sex Appeal and Good Natured.

I want to have a character who can use every single dialogue option possible and can use all the computers in VC to learn every thing there is to know about the backstory. Also, I havent' ever seen many of the special encounters, and want to check them out.

But Jesus! Playing like this is really hard! You can't fight, for crap, so the only way to gain XP seems to be talking to people or taking quests that don't necessitate fighting: Smiley the trapper is out, protecting Tor's brahmin is out, filling Whiskey Bob's still was only possible because I ran past all the Geckos. I'm thinking I'm gonna head straight for VC to recruit Cassidy, swing back through the Den for Vic, and by then I'll have enough firepower to take on the Geckos in the cave and win Sulik's freedom.

Not playing as a violent character means I have to try to come up with new solutions for all the same old problems, and it's just damn hard!

Anybody got any tips for how to go about playing a character like Squid?

To rephrase what Sander said more explicitly: bumping your own post by double posting isn't allowed, use the edit function.

I made a role-playing character once. He wasn't entirely without combat skill - some basic Melee Weapons to complement his IN/CH forte - except I was supposed to play him realistically, which meant he never entered into conflicts or danger or weird fetch quests unless he had to, meaning he didn't really level up, meaning he got seriously outpowered and slain in a random encounter. Iron man game, so bye bye...
