nothing works right after unpack on FO2

TheChosenFritz

First time out of the vault
So I unpacked everything, and changed my fallout config to look at the new places. The game starts but the graphics are all screwy with extreme contrast and looks like an acid trip. Then I can create a character (normal graphics), the intro movie plays (back to acid trip), then the game starts. Normal graphics, except the fact that I'm looking at my Tribal standing in a giant black nothing and the cursor and tribal starts making trails everywhere I move them.

Did I do something wrong, or are my files bad?

Yes, you did something wrong. Your directory path is still pointing at the master.dat and critter.dat? Yes? Good. Also check the path to the master_patch and critter_patch directory. They need to point to your extracted files.

By the way.. why unpack the game?

OK, so I need to extract (in order)

master.dat
patch000.dat
critters.dat

into /data

then change everyting in the config to point to /fallout2/data

correct?

I hadn't extracted the critter.dat before

and sorry didn't see your BTW note, I'm unpacking the files cause I'm testing out some maps I made, and am wanting to start work on a project, I'm going to call it

Fallout America

:D

So, the graphics on intro and stuff are now working, but I still get a big black nothing with my tribal standing in the middle when I start the game.

Every time I move the cursor I get trail marks like a good acid trip.

Here's a copy of my config

Hmm even if you want to test just some maps... also then you don't need to extract everything. You are sure that your directorys are 100% correct?

-Fallout2
--data
---maps
---data
---text
---... and so on?

Actually yes I think I did, and that may explain it every time I start the game it removes every thing from the directory and creates a .lst file

I used DatExplorer to upack everything, I opened up the dir and I can see all the files, then I start FO2 and get the same issues. I go back and check the dir and there are no longer a bunch of files just a single .lst

Yes, thats because all proto files will be deleted if you start a new game - unless you set them read only.

Ok, I'll try that when I get home this evening. Thanks guys. Just real quick, is it possible, and how hard would it be to change out the world map?

If you want a new worldmap image - this is pretty easy. You need first a new image, then you cut it in pieces and include it in the game. Not very hard.

If you want to change the encounters, etc. You need to edit the tables in the worldmap.txt. This can also be a lot work.
