I've been tossing this idea around for a few weeks so here it is. I am a student of history. If I was raised in a different place I might have went to college and became a History teacher or something because I love it. Mostly I prefer military events and mass deaths due to a fascination with...well death and destruction I guess. Why do things happen the way they do? How did they alter the course of history? What has been obscured by the sands of time? Countless civilizations have been lost.
Over the course of a few thousand years we have kept records. Some of them not very accurate, but with things like astronomical events, tax records, census/marriage/birth records, etc, we have managed to keep decent track of when large populations were wiped out. This is the purpose of this thread. You can list when famous people were born, or minor events that might not be death related, but this is all about war, apocalyptic predictions, plagues, extinction level events, and the days/months they happened or are said to happen. Prophecies are included so drop your favorite nutter theory here and place your bets. You will undoubtedly be wrong. People have thought the world would end since time began. Jesus predicted it would happen soon. Guess he meant relatively speaking.
Where will we be in a thousand years? Will the flames of war snuff us out like a candle in the night or will we dawn in a new era of technological marvel and progress, ever forward towards that utopian ideal that Star Trek is so famous for? Or will Mother Nature do the job for us and send a rogue asteroid, or another Ice Age, or melt the polar ice caps and drown us in our own toxic oceans? I can't wait to find out.

65 Million Years Ago - after over 160 million years of dominating the Earth, the dinosaurs were wiped out. There are numerous theories on what caused this, but one thing is for certain: It ain't over yet.
Missed it by a day but on March 15th, 44 B.C - Julius Caesar was assassinated after many signs that his life would in fact be in danger. They did this to restore the republic, but that bit them in the ass.
On March 16, 1945 - with a U.S. Navy military government established, Iwo Jima was declared secured and the fighting over. When all was done, more than 6,000 Marines died fighting for the island, along with almost all the 21,000 Japanese soldiers trying to defend it.
On this day in 1968 - a platoon of American soldiers brutally kill between 200 and 500 unarmed civilians at My Lai, one of a cluster of small villages located near the northern coast of South Vietnam.
Battle of Averasboro, North Carolina, 1865 - The Yankees lost approximately 95 men killed, 530 wounded, and 50 missing, while Hardee lost about 865 total. The battle did little to slow the march of Sherman’s army.
March 11th, 1669 - Mount Etna erupted killing over 20,000.
March 13th, 1881 - Assassination of Czar Alexander II. The assassins stood on either side of the street as the Russian Czar drove by, throwing glass bombs filled with nitroglycerin which blasted parts of his vehicle apart before blowing his legs to pieces and tearing out one of his eyes. He died shortly later.
I'll try to keep this updated with plenty of death. Feel free to add.
