Opera 9.5 - Extremely Fast.

Comparing between page rendering speeds from Opera 9.24, and Opera 9.5 "Kestrel", Opera seems to be taking the bread on all fronts. It's currently the fastest internet browser in benchmarks, and in my personal real-world tests. [1]

It is also one of the most secure currently, as the majority of the regular computing crowd is using Internet Explorer 7 that came bundled with their pre-installed versions of Windows Vista.

So if you haven't done so yet, please upgrade your current browsing experience to Opera 9.5.

You will not regret it.

I'm liking it so far, I just switched over from Firefox. It's a scary new world of browsing.

is a 0.7s difference that important?
Come to think of it, my main beef with FF is that after some time it starts using 200+MB of RAM instead of ~40MB, which it started with. Does opera have that?

I have 4 gigs... no reason to use Opera other than security that I can see. But, I do like my Mozilla. They took Bill down a notch and that endears me to them somewhat.

i used to like opera but i switched to (GASP) IE7 and am loving it ... i will give this one a try .. but speed i think is not so relevant to the process... unless its huge differneces

If you tweak your Fx right, there is no reason to switch to opera.

This is true.

plus, opera can not come anywhere near the customiability of firefox.
i have so many add ons that i basically rely on.

firefox 3, though, should speed up firefox a ton and also reduce the memory leaks when it is released (its in beta).

although, the majority of memory leaks and slowdowns in firefox are caused by plugins.

I find that Opera loads things better than Mozilla, irregardless of speed. Mozilla sometimes will lock up on a page (particularly ones with slow servers) and simply not work, while Opera has been very consistent.

Firefox can not come anywhere near the functionality of opera even with all those addons which mostly copies operas functions.
Not to mention the M$ methods Firefox is using to promote itsfelf.
And then look at IE and Firefox - almost no difference.

i was a big fan of Firefox for quite a while. but even i have to admit now that Opera is far better than Firefox at the moment. and by that i dont only mean browsing speed.

I think it imports them automatically. I just installed the new Opera and it took all the bookmarks i had in Firefox.

I dunno. It's certainly faster, but it seems somehow... choppy, on pages with lots of fancy stuff. And it seems to incorrectly display, or display with small errors, the odd webpage, like wow-europe.com.

I'm using IE 7 atm thing is doesn't lag when I type in the web address seems to lag a bit when I'm typing in a address in Opera. Maybe non beta one will work better for me? Kind of goes like this to give you guys a idea:

I'll type it fast then:

ww .......(10 secs pass)w.yahoo.com

Kind of werid gets annoying since I like going to web sites quick.

how ironic, since of the mainstream browsers, Opera is the one that displays webpages most correctly (webstandard wise).

if you're having this type of problem, it's due to using a beta or due to badly coded websites.

IE is welknown for not using webstandards as it should and as such, many lazy coders only check their work on IE, leaving a lot of coding errors undetected.

it's normal you're experiencing problems if you're using BETA software, mr smartypantz...

as for your particular problem mentioned, more often than not this type of behavior is due to your anti-virus and not your browser.

Cool, thanks!

Okay, some more questions:
1. Is there any way to add a close button on the right of the "trash" that closes the current tab like FF? Most the preferences can do is either a close button on every tab or no close button at all. No widgets came up on the search for "close button" (beta thing?)

EDIT: Durr, found it.

2. How to sort bookmarks manually? It's only either sort by name/date/visited/etc., and if I try to drag&drop, nothing changes (beta bug?)

I'm using, for testing purposes, the latest stable release. I might switch, on some pages the loading time difference is really huge, and for someone who doesn't have loads of ram, a less resource heavy browser is a good thing too.

A quick question - does opera block pop-ups and ads?

Yep.

Tools > Quick Preferences > Block Unwanted Pop-Ups enabled by default.

As for the address bar skipping, yeah it's beta software. It's bound to have a few quirks, but the point is still clear, Kestrel (Opera 9.5) is the fastest there is right now. :D

...You are mistaken. Firefox and IE were completely different animals until Microsoft copied Mozilla due to their success. Mozilla capitalized on several areas where Microsoft had been complacent (Example: Active X exploits)
