Opinions on the Elder Scrolls

I think Bethesda did an exceptional job with every Elder Scrolls game. A lot of people on here think Bethesda bodged Fallout 4, and I tend to agree with them, but I dont think you can say the same for Skyrim, or Oblivion, both brilliant. In my opinion, Bethesda did an exceptional job with that series, and Skyrim is my favourite game. I actually prefer the series to Fallout, but thats just my humble opinion. Places like Bruma, the Imperial City, Whiterun, Bleak Falls Barrow and Moss Mother Cavern were just magical.
What do you guys think of the Elder Scrolls?

This is 'General Discussion Forum', not 'General Gaming and Hardware Forum'. Anyway, why don't you also talk about Arena? Daggerfall? Morrowind? You know, Elder Scrolls I, II, and III? I haven't played them, only Skyrim and even then, I didn't finish it.

yeah its been moved.

Yeah all three of them are great games in my opinion, only played Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim though. Off round to play Arena on my friends PC soon and it looks really good. Want to get Daggerfall, but its not on Steam and its super expensive on Ebay or Amazon.

You dont really "finish" Skyrim, you just keep playing.
you're kinda trying to get us in a flame war of explaining how The Elderscrolls has been raped by Beth as much like the Fallout franchise.
Nope not at all. No flame wars intended, just friendly discussion (:

How many mods do you use in your skyrim playthrough?

Ha but serriously I disagree.

I've already posted my opinions elsewhere on the forum.
But I do want to add that while I prefer Fallout over Elder Scrolls, I prefer Elder Scrolls over Bethesda's Fallout.
Even at its worst, Skyrim still had some role-play ability in there. It wasn't as rewarding as say Morrowind, but it was still there.

Personally, and I know I'm going to get a lot of hate for this, but if we're now going to get Fallout games by Bethesda, they could do with a bit more Elder Scrolls in them. What I mean by this is that I wish we could more Factions to join, each of them have their own questline and so forth. Instead we get a handful of Factions we can join and Bethesda make no effort into making any of them interesting.

I'm not saying that Fallout should have more characteristics of the Elder Scrolls games, but it wouldn't hurt to learn from them.

In any case, it's obvious Bethesda care more about Elder Scrolls than they do Fallout. It's noticeable in their design and the fact that TES seems more open for the player.

I thought Skyrim was pretty good, despite it's dumbing down. It's about as equally dumbed down as Oblivion, really. Skyrim's just more polished.

Sutton retcons akatosh and alduin from being two incarnations/interpretations of the same being to being separate beings. Had they kept the og lore it could have generated a lot of side beliefs among npcs here's a list

1. God (akatosh) has come it's the end repent etc

2. A faction in which rebel against their former god.

3. Nonbelievers being persecuted.

Mobile makes me lazy... but

Imagine skyrim with the whole gods here time to die. Religious tensions everywhere. Instead they went with the retcon and generic rebel vs the empire plus racism and "we nords don't like magic"

Sounds pretty boring, Akatosh ending everything? Doesn't particularly make much sense. Factions rebelling against there former god we dont see, but we do see all the cool stuff about Talos worship and the Thalmor. And non believers being persecuted we have seen so many times before and it is almost as generic as Empire vs Rebel.

I like Skyrim for a bit of mindless fun and violence, besides that it's not too deep a game. Still fun, and lots of possibilities for mods.
Morrowind is one of my favourite games, and I'm still playing it. Its combat is clunky as hell, but the overall design of the world is just gorgeous. Too bad it suffers so much from its technical limitations, although it does look kinda good with Morrowind Overhaul.
So when Oblivion was announced I was excited, and then bitterly disappointed as the game was just... Boring, generic and overall weak. While Skyrim suffers from that, too, it's at least fun to play and looks good.
Now Daggerfall... It's as close to a PnP as you can get with a real time combat system, but holy shit did they bite off more than they could chew. Still a pretty impressive game and fun in its own right.
Never played Arena, though.

I personally loved Skyrim. I mean, I know that Bethesda can't make puzzles for shit(Stupid cave entry Bear, Bear, Dragon thingy), but apart from that, I think they did a good job creating a somewhat cool looking world, and a fairly fun combat system. I also really loved Morrowind, because it has incredibly good exploration, a really cruel and unforgiving world, and some of the best RPG mechanics I've seen in an elder scrolls game.

Oblivion on the other hand, is a no-no for me. It neutered the unforgiving world and RPG mechanics of Morrowind, without the cool world and combat of skyrim. It's basically an awkward game for me that is half of two games, but neither of the halves I wanted.

Holy shit @Hassknecht arena is insane. I swear it takes 10 real days to walk to a town that's not randomly generated.
Yeah, Arena and Daggerfall were the only TES games that actually tried for realistic map size. I think Arena actually contains all of Tamriel, but if I understood it correctly it's not all that open, and the amount of cities is smaller than Daggerfall.
But Daggerfall is just ridiculous in its size. I think it's a good model how a large open world game could work: Make the map realistically large, add fast travel to known locations (with options for transport and resting and speed) but also allow the player to actually walk/ride everywhere in real time. It may take hours or days to reach the next town, but that's how it is.
Well, it's how I would do a first person Fallout, at least. It would also allow for more vehicles (I know people are very much torn about that, but I think it's ridiculous that there are no working cars around. It's a gameplay thing, not a lore thing) and whole new aspects of the game. Might be too much Mad Max, though...

I am torn on the TES. On one hand it can be mindless fun and enjoyable with mods but the lore is so God damn bat shit, inconsistent and consistently contradicts itself(doesn't help that the elderscrolls.wiki consistently use out of game texts and works as facts for their articles) that it makes it hard for me to enjoy.

@Hassknecht I personally prefer an overworld map that just says you've been travelling for days line in fo1 and fo2 to the B.S. found in arena.
Eh, doesn't make much difference to me. I mean, Daggerfall had world map travel very much like Fallout, you just couldn't "explore" the map because you didn't have to. But one could make a game the size of Daggerfall with Fallout's world map system, too, no problem there.
