Patched , Anti-Materiel vs Unique Gauss

LinkPain

Mildly Dipped
First playthrough i used Guns .
Throughout the whole game i mostly used Ranger Sequoia and Trial Carbine modded to snipe .
Anti-Materiel slow firing rate and that ammo weight killed my enthusiasm for snipers in general , not to mention nerfed critical , high AP cost and shots that wake up even bears . Used it for Deatchlaws mostly and some human enemies just to spend that ammo . I use VATS often and i spent most perks for that . I can barely get 2 shots with it , which is okay considering high firepower. But still ....
Even supressed sniper rifle isn't such a good weapon .

Compared to the famed YCS/186 i just don't know . It eats ammo like nothing but much lesser AP cost . And i don't have to waste perk for strength requirement . Tested it on my char which has low EW , looks ok . It does shoot faster even with constant reload then AM rifle . With Fast Reload perk . I don't even want to imagine how AM fires without Fast Reload ...

So anybody with experience on both guns and energy weapons , any thoughts ?
AP , perks , ammo , critical and requirements wise .
They're both quite powerful but AM just didn't do the job for me , while YCS looks and feels way easier to use and with better damage .
I plan to use energy weapons now on my second playthrough .

Well if you want to go with energy weapons and sniping, you might want to get Plasma Spazz (I think is called that) it causes a explosion qhenever you kill soemthign with an energy weapon, btu be careful, if you shoot to close to yourself you can cripple your limbs or even kill yourself, ED-E dies from a single explosion from that perk so aslo, be careful with your companions.
You should also go for the 12.7 mm that thing is really worth it, I just sneak killed Motor Runner without the other junkies noticing, and its a quick reload weapon, so no long reloading loop liek with the magnum or cowboy repeater. Taking the Cowboy perk is useful for using rifles and shotguns too, also put a lot of points into repair, and choose vigilant recycler, it saves you a lot of money.

I always take jury rigging for repairs too .
But for energy weapons run i will mostly use YCS unique gauss rifle .

How does Meltdown work with gauss ?
Does it work at all ?

yes, it works, its pretty good when sniping large groups, you will kill your target and make it explode in his allies face, even if you don't kill them you will take a good chunk of their hp.

OK , that YCS/186 literally rips everything ...
Uses a lot of ammo though . It even reloads faster than AM rifle , i have a save with both guns and Fast Reload perk when i checked it .

The only thing that bothers me is that i don't understand will i need more than 6 Perception with energy weapons or ever , considering that the requirement for Better Criticals is 6 PE . It looks like it doesn't affect anything else besides some skill points . Accuracy is the same whenever i tried with Guns but i can't figure out EW , i need to get at least 80 skill points to be sure .

But that unique gauss is seriously overpowered compared to AM rifle .

I think the sniper rifle is now working as it should and not nerfed, like I read so many times. Before the patch any shot fired with a sniper rifle was a crit hit, even if your Luck was at 2 or 3. Anyone! Worst of all, the crit hit was too high, x5 (or it was x4?), so you were able to clean Quarry Junction with only two shots on that friggi' overpowered deathclaws and at most five on the Mother/Alpha Male.

You don't see this with the Trail carbine, Brush Gun, Cowboy Repetear and even the Gauss or YCS/186, this weapons depend of your luck stats and other perks. I did a test with the sniper rifle having 8 luck + lucky shades + better criticals + Boone's beret and was able to score crit hits one after another, just like before. But with only 5 luck + Boone's beret my crit hits decreased a lot.
I still think the sniper rifle is a worthy weapon, specially with the upgrades, only 3 lbs and silenced! AMR is not a worthy weapon in hardcore, it was made for casual playing where ammo don't have weigh.

I've played a EW courier with YCS/186 and Fast Reload, this weapon, the Q-35 and Laser RCW became beasts to be used, putting most other weapons to shame. LOL
The downside is they eat ammo by the dozens.
And not only the YCS are overpowered, the regular Gauss Rifle is a powerhouse too (just like it was in FO2).

But I'm a little tired of sneak builds and energy weapons, usually I've being playing a brute courrier: 8 in E, 7 in S and 7 in A. LOL This Machine became a beast with Fast Shot trait, you put down anything before you. And if the foe is too close to you, you switch to Knock-Knock or Shishkebab (with the Pyromaniac perk).

Gauss is simply op and too fast xD
Never ever use Meltdown with it when near enemies , i ripped both my legs , torso and head in one hit but at least i killed that damn Legendary Cazador .

Vigilant Recycler and Pack Rat remedies the ammo situation quite nicely . For AM rifle also Pack Rat but Hand Loader instead .

I now on my EW Courier have 800 mf cell , half of that which i got with vigilant recycler . And still have space for more , i even carry plasma caster which is 20 lbs . Hardcore gameplay of course .

Yeah, I always play in hardcore, I think is much more fun.
But I don't mind if people like to play in casual, the choice is theirs and Fallout has this beauty, it's an open game.

But for truly taste Fallout hardcore mode is needed. ;)

One thing I do with my EW courier is having Veronica as companion, she is a walking workbench, so you can recycle or convert ammo on the fly.
Those founded EC makes A LOT of EC packs.

I'm not so sure Meltdown is such a good idea unless you plan on taking up both energy weapons AND something else to a high level. There was an unfortunate point in my game where I could only really use energy weapons well and I was trying to go through Vault 34... it was a disaster. Sometimes you just can't avoid the enemy getting close, and Meltdown will kill you pretty fast. It was very frustrating going through V34 and I imagine it can't be the only place where enemies always get close to you

I killed 3 deathclaws with 1 shot of the YCS/186 with Meltdown.
It's not a weapon to be used against easy oponents, so don't waste it.
Meltdown can really be useful, specially because the damage the killed enemy takes when dying is the same the explosion will cause.
Just be careful, don't let enemies get too close.

Well i broke my legs but killed Legendary Cazador with one shot . Had to load of course , or it would kill me later when i was going through Cezars camp killing everything on my path ... damn ballistic fists in my face !

Anyway , with pack rat i carry 1500 microfusion and still have a lot of space to spare for everything else . Great perk .
