Pay More For Better Games?

Davaris

Still Mildly Glowing
I was wondering how much the community would pay for a decent Fallout 3. One that was 100% true to the original.

Personally I would pay up to $200, possibly more. The reason I'd pay so much is:

1) I don't like anything that is being made these days.
2) I understand games of that quality and detail cost a fortune and a lot of time to make.
3) The fan base is tiny. So the devs need to get a higher price per unit to pay their costs.
4) I'm sick of waiting for games that are never going to be made.

I know what your'e thinking, a game dev is asking this so it must be market research. It is (a little bit) and also it is out of personal interest.

no I will not pay anymore I would rather pay less. below is the reason why.

I read recently that Test Drive Unlimited for Xbox 360 will be $39.95 in the US. Here's a quote from the CEO of Atari -

"Innovation should be available to everyone, not a privilege for those who can afford high price tags. Our GamersFirst program demonstrated the positive impact of flexibility in pricing. We believe it is our mission to deliver triple-A games that are accessible to the masses. As such, we are offering Test Drive Unlimited for $39.95."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then when questioned on the price in the UK and Europe, a few days later, he came up with:

"The US and Europe are very different markets in terms of the penetration of Xbox 360 and HDTV,” explained CEO Bruno Bonnell. “The US is much more advanced than Europe so we believe the time is right to introduce a lower price point. This is why we have chosen to be aggressive. But we won’t do that in Europe."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So apparently, 'everyone' (in the first quote) means 'The USA'.

$40USD translates to $53/54 Australian Dollars. And what, pray tell, will we end up paying for the game here?

PC-CDROM - $79.95
PS2 - $79.95
PSP - $79.95
Xbox 360 - $109.95

Why should I pay more for something when I allready do.[/url]

200 dollars sounds about right.

I buy games that are a quarter of that price but aren't nearly a quarter as fun as Fallout. I would even be willing to pay more, assuming it really was true to the originals.

yes, i'd pay more. probably around 125€. however, how do you know you're paying for something you'll like unless you download it from warez first to check it out completely & then decide if it's worth the high price or not. (no this is not a warez promotion, mr moderator. get off my back please. ;) )

it'd be nice if you could legally play through the entire game first and then decide what price you want to pay for it. i do realise it's probably practically impossible for various reasons, but it'd still be neat...

TDU is sold in Europe for 39.99€ (PC). standard price for a pc game floats between 20€ & 45€.

TDU is sold in Europe for PS2 @ 47.99€; Xbrick1337 @ 63.99€.

You mean developers give away a game, then there's a PayPal button in the bottom right corner of the ending screen? Yeah, I don't think as many people would give $200 as those who'd say in advance that they might. :)

If a respected member of the community played it and endorsed it I'd buy it.

You don't have to pay anything at all. The real question is would you give up 4 forgetable games for 1 exceptional game?

Yes that has been tried before. It does not work.

I would pay what I could afford, but I'd just be happy to know that Fallout 3 was a good game, even if I couldn't play it. I'm very pessimistic though, and the game will most probably cost around 60/70€...

I hope the game is REALLY worth that money, otherwise I won't buy it, simply... :(

the markup for AU games is bullshit to purchase games from a distributor in the US you would be looking to pay about $20 to $30. in aus cost is around about $68 for pc game, console games are around about $78 depending on the game.

Umm. You do realize that in the US, the average cost for a new PC game ranges from $30 to $50 and console games from $40 to $60, right? ($50-$80 with the PS3) It takes a while for the price to drop to the $20-30 range, unless it's a poor seller or was a "bargain title" in the first place.

With that in mind, your markups aren't that drastic. In fact, they're pretty much in line with the exchange rate of your currency with ours ($1.30 AU per $1 US) plus the obligatory shipping markup.

You people do realize that nobody cares if ten people on this forum would pay (a lot) more for the game in order for it to be more to their liking, yes? They plan to sell millions of this game, and all of this is entirely moot.

That said, I'd easily pay $500 if it was what I wanted. :p

You're right. 10 people aren’t enough and the AAA devs don't care, because they are targeting a huge casual market.

Personally I think the days of hardcore AAA games that appeal to intellectuals are over, because there are far more casual gamers than hard core gamers and they are buying consoles instead of computers.

However many developers are quitting the industry every day and they are looking for niche markets that are willing to pay a premium. So if enough people were willing to pay a much higher price and said so they would take notice.

EDIT:
I should have said at the beggining of the thread "a game of the same standard as the original Fallout".

No smaller dev could secure the Fallout IP. It is lost forever.

Perhaps this thread should be moved?

I would easily pay $500 for a new turn-based game of the caliber of say Fallout or Jagged Alliance. The last 5 games I bought I only played half way through before I quit in disgust and started up a new game of FO or JA. Thank God for the mod makers because they are the only ones who have done anything for me lately.

tl;dr

what a lame crappy fanboy thread

"lol would you pay a bazillion dollars for teh sequal to our bestestest game!?!?!"

FAIL TO DELIVER

if it took me to point this out....wow, just wow.

I'll wait with such remarks until I've seen how good or crappy Age of Decadence will turn out.

Pay more for a game to assure its quality?
Oh hell no!

A game should already be a quality product when it is released. The market sets the prices, rather the game be a piece of crap or a stunning masterpiece.

Once people say "yeah i'm willing to pay out the nose for a good game" it is not just the good games that are going to go up in price, but all games, since that amount would become the standard on what the consumer is willing to spend. Most sane people do not ask for price hikes.

Heh, this got me thinking. Strangely, the game market is one of the few markets where consumers, quality and procution cost do not (really) influence prices. No matter how crappy the game, they'll almost always cost the same as any other game. In that respect, quality should realistically influence prices.
