Playing Fallout 1/2 using Tactics Engine

Angus

First time out of the vault
I'm sure someone has asked about this before but I couldn't find anything doing a search. I just wanted to know if this is possible or if the Tactics engine is completely different and incompatible. I only ask because the 640x480 graphics of the original games look horrible on my 19" monitor and the only other machine I have access to, a laptop, doesn't use the whole screen when it displays anything less than 1024x768. Any information good or bad would be appreciated.

I'm under the impression that it's almost impossiable to get conversation trees into FO:T.

So yeah, you couldn't do it.

Fallout 2 to Fallout Tactics

Would it be impossible to convert FO2 to FOT engine? At least in my opinion it would be really awesome to have Fallout2 class story and atmosphere on FOT engine. I know that many things are made differently in FOT than in FO2. For example, I have not encountered any dialogue where you could choose what to say. Is this even possible in FOT? Of course, it didn't have to be exactly similar to FO2, but could it be done basicly it, especially considering the dialogue.

Oh, and be mercyful to me if this was a complitely fool idea, 'cause I have no experience whatsoever about modding FOs. :P

there are no dialogue trees available in FOT... so you can make fallout 2, but you just can't talk to anyone... kinda pointless.

I already tried to make some of Fallout2 in FOT when FOT editors first came out. I gave up. The dialog lack sucks, and the whole "squad" stuff also didn't seem quite right.
It would be great if they made Fallout 3 similar to Fallout 2 but in graphics equal to those in FOT (definetly need bigger resolutions), but FOT is FOT, and cannot be made into Fallout or Fallout 2.
To tell you the truth, I don't like FOT. As a tactics game it isn't bad, but as a Fallout - down the toilet. It's a good thing I got it for free, or else I would have bitten my own fingers off for paying for such a crappy Fallout.

About modifying Fallout Tactics

What might be a stupid question, but I was wondering if it was possible to mod Fallout Tactics in a way that you could recreate Fallout 1 & 2 on it. To be more specific, to actually emulate the first two Fallouts: rpg elements, conversation paths, Maps and nearly everything else, but keeping the nicer graphics, game engine (don't flame me on this one) and the ability to control your NPC's equipment and stats like it's possible in FOT.

Some things can be done, others can't.

Dialogue Trees: There are some rather primitive work-arounds for instituting these, but they are far from what was to be had in FO/FO2. So this one's a no-go.

There are some replica maps of FO/FO2 towns, etc., that have been made. These can never be 100% replicas due to some differences in the interface such as the lack of a sighting bubble in FoT, but you can get pretty damned close. You can dl a copy/replica of Vault 13 that I made over at DaC if you're looking to save yourself some mapping time.

Lots of other things cannot be done w/FoT, though, for instance the Speech skill was replaced with Piloting, and there is no way of using FoT scripting to make a Stat or Skill check.

Basically, while there are user-made maps and mini-campaigns that are far more RPG oriented than the core campaign was in FoT there is no way that you will ever be able to make a decent RPG experience on par w/the actual RPGs using FoT. At least not unless you want to get into some serious game hacking, which is beyond the ability of the vast majority of members within the FO community.

Cheers,

OTB

A few questions and ideas.

I was just wondering, how come no one has made a mode for Fallout Tactics to resolve the problem of lack of loot in random encounters? It would make it really alot more pointful and fun to run around the desert for a little.

Also, has anyone thought of making a mod for Fallout Tactics of simply reproducing the original Fallout and Fallout 2 so it can benefit from the updated engine and graphics? I was rather surprised that Interplay didn't update the games and release them as a pack to get some extra money out of the franchise. I don't know how hard it would be to update the games to use the FT engine, but surely it would be beneficial, especially since they are in such bad need of capital right now.

Lastly, what would you guys recommend in terms of mods that modify Tactics to make it a more enjoyable game but don't completely destroy the inherint balance? I tried to get that Awakening thing but all the links are broken and the one that did work was slow and when it was done, it complained that the zip was corrupted.

Just wondering :)

Making Fallout1&2 look like Tactics would require A LOT of work. Besides I don't know if it would be worth it, since most people don't like some FT graphic elements (like pink mutants, pink ghouls, pink people! and such).

I also tried to download the Awaken Mod and when (if?) the links will be back, I recommed you do do so. :)

Interplay is to blind to see a chance that would save thier asses so don't count on anything good from them.

1. Modifying the gameplay of the two CRPGs to fit into Tactics would be nothing more than a waste of a LOT of time. Those who like playing Fo1 and Fo2 are able to do so without problem, they don't need all the issues the Phoenix Engine brings along inherently. The only way the engine could be considered "updated" is in terms of the graphics. It would cost far more in man hours and licensing (the Phoenix engine is pretty much MicroForté's thing unless they sold it).

2. As this topic is primarily about FOT modding, then this goes into the more than obvious modding forum, NOT on the Fallout RPG gameplay and tech help forum.

3. FOT has inherent balance?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

That was a good one.

Yeah well, that's the folks around here... They're pretty unedged or something cause we got alot of mixed oppinions down here... But don't take it personal... Sometimes people don't intend to be nasty, sometimes people write it down... and we take it the wrong way...

That is a poor excuse as to why you both are bloody morons. Both can't seem to bother reading the forum descriptions, and you both whine when you get your knuckles rapped with the proverbial yardstick. Snake, you have no excuse, after I already warned you. Yes, it was I who Vatted the one thread, the one you made after I warned you. That's two.

You also both seem to be under the further misconception that I give a rat's ass as to what you think. If you don't like following the forum structure and how things are run, you don't have to post. Your mother may have some familial obligation to you, but happily I don't share the same sentiment.

I am not your mother, nor am I your father. Nobody here is. We don't like to clean up after the dreck you post into the wrong forums, nor do we get paid to do so, so you become nothing more than an unrelated annoyance and are treated as such because of it. Cope with it. Show some sentience and some responsibility in the future.

In conclusion:

Err, Im not sure if its safe to say anything now but....
Just a quick note on porting FO into another engine for improved graphics, I think there are plans/ideas to use the IanOut engine for this, which supports higher resolution. At least I think there are.

Check out the IanOut Forum for more info.

Unless of course there is a genius out there who could mod the FO engine to run in higher resolution (cant see that happening though). Maybe if someone were to leak the source code out it might be possible (once again I cant see that happening)

Hmmm... I wouldn't dare to say anything now... YEAH RIGHT...

What's you're problem Roshambo, because you are a moderator (correction: Admin) doesn't mean you have to treat people the way you do...

WTF Man, you could just send me a PM when I posted into the wrong topic... Sorry Bro, you can't seem to talk to people in a decent way, maybe you should have just asked me when something went wrong... And I could have responded in a decent way back... Hey Bro, you can talk to me fair, you can keep it decent, or you don't talk to me at all... I simply don't listen to people trying to get me down... I know better...

EDIT: Please close this forum, I don't like to go into discussion about nothing...

you CAN'T make fallout 1 and 2 using the tactics engine...

it has NO dialogue engine....

didn't you notice there were no relpies to any of the conversations you had with people.. they were all one sided...

you'd also need to re-do all of the artwork from fallout into the higher resolution or it would look blocky..

I think he ment... mod FOT into FO1 or 2, that would be alot easier. The Dialogue can be fixed in FOT, so you can select different answers and options on what you want to say back... There are ways with different trigger types to solve this problem, it wont be a 100 % accurate... but it would be worth trying... If anyone had the time and the patience to do it....

Then just let me be who I am and forget about it...

We're working on it... There is a line saying: This list will be up-dated as long as we're working on new weapons and items

So we're just testing a bunch of stuff out, nothing at this point is certain to make it through.

1. that's exactly what i said.. "fallout 1 and 2 with the tactics engine"...

2. was referring to the game, and not you in person or any part of your dealings with "the management"..

3. fair enough, hope it works..
