The Colony is a reality show that aired on Discovery Channel July 21, 2009. Four episodes have aired and the next one is scheduled to air August 18th.
<blockquote>"The series takes place over the course of ten weeks and was filmed in an industrial area bordering the Los Angeles River on the edge of downtown Los Angeles, and follows ten volunteers in an environment that simulates life after a global catastrophe."</blockquote>In an interview the creator states:
<blockquote>"In a sense, the show is a 'Survivor' set in a civilized community after civilization gets shredded."</blockquote>Link:Official Website

Half the "volunteers" are actors. Supplies magically appear in crates, everything they need is somehow there when they need it. You might learn something from watching it like how to filter water, but this is all basic survival stuff every other show of this type already covered.

Makes me think of: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanford_Prison_Experiment

And from what I can gather only Mike is an actor, planted to steer the group into certain situations. The rest are genuine.

I find it interesting enough to watch even if it is fake.

That's what I tell my girlfriend when I get caught looking at the breasts of other women.

Just saying.

The Colony is a TV reality show rather than a documentary.

The post title might be a bit misleading.

Heh. I saw an ad for this show quite some time back.

Haven't seen it yet. Looks somewhat interesting.

If it's as fake as it sounds though, can't be that great.

I'll give it a look-see.

It is somewhat interesting, I've seen all of the episodes up to this point. The biggest problem I have with the show is the members of the "the colony" are still acting way too civilized. I am not trying to write a critical review of the show by any means, I loathe reality shows but I think it's pretty cool for entertainment's sake. It's way more enjoyable to watch than the majority of crap on tv. That being said it's just basically impossible to put these people into a realistic post-apocalyptic environment. There is no life and death element where they are scrambling to survive and there is no real fear. The "raiders" aren't allowed to touch them, let alone hurt them and the group dynamic borders on ridiculous. They're bordering on more of a hippie commune rather than a group of survivors banding together to fight for scare resources. There is no real leader and everything is run by committee, on top of that the females are out of control and browbeat their morality into everyone. At one point when they are making weapons one the women literally says "make bread not bombs" when one of the scientists is trying to make a claymore. I would've liked to see a firearm element like maybe the addition of simunitions or even paintball. Someone said previously the show is more about the technology which i think is correct but seriously they essentially stuck them in a machine shop with electricity and amenities and they basically dont have to go scavenging for anything it's all handed to them. I was kind of impressed that they got a gasoline generator to work with wood gasification.

On a high note, I saw a trailer for another post-apoc show coming out either history or discovery didnt catch the name though. Any one catch that?

Like mentioned above, "The Colony" is more of a technical presentation distilled from the realism of violence in a post-apocalyptic world.

draeke, the show you mentioned is probably NBC's new tv series "Day One". Link: http://www.nbc.com/day-one/

Unfortunately, if the show gets low viewer ratings it'll be scrubbed like all other pilots.

yeah i watched it, it was ok for the fisrt 5 mins then some raider came with guns and just shot them in the air, they should use ruber bullets and if you get shot your off the show or something to that affect

The idea of The Colony has promise, but they skewed everything in favor of the colonists to the point of absurdity. As someone else said, the "raiders" are pathetic, the colony itself is a fairly secure workshop/warehouse full of every kind of material you might need to survive, and the colonists all have convenient specialties; doctor, nurse, mechanical and electronic engineers, and construction workers.

The best that can be said is that the show looks fairly cool with wreckage and whatnot.
