Power Armour changes.

First time out of the vault
Did the game at any point explain the sudden shift in PA mechanics? I mean I somewhat understand it because of the awful design choices to throw you one right in the beginning and having 100% radiation resistance, but when did "a microfusion cell that lasts a 100 years" became "a fusion core that lasts 20-30min"?

I'm on my 3rd character and it still frustrates me to no end, so I've completely opted not to use the PA in any situation.

I don't think they ever explained that or do I think they really care. It seems to be a total retcon.

Well, I guess someone knew the PA was simply too OP the way they were going to implement it, so they wanted to limit its use. All thought it was a great idea, so they implemented those fusion cores. Now someone else was afraid that a player couldnt finish his playthrough wearing PA 100% of the time and tripled the amount of cores you find.

Also I wonder...well...you can build gas-powered generators that miraculously don't ever need any fuel to run...why cant you simply build rechargeable cores? I mean you can build a teleporting device, but no battery charger? Come on. :D

Consider this: has Bethesda ever given any thought to plausibility/verisimilitude? I'd say no. They said it themselves on several occasions. So there you go, little is plausible in this game, even in its own logic - it has none.

They could have easily avoided issues by offering the player 2 or 3 types of fusion cores, where you have a chance to eventually get one that basically never runs out. But only if you're in the late game with a high enough level to survive the encounters while searching for it. If there would be like just a handfull of those around, it might be a neat challange.

They could've easily resolved it simply by following the way it was introduced in the previous titles. I feel this is just another excuse to please the instant gratification crowd. Even worse, the mechanics become redundant in mid to late game when you're swimming in fusion cores and / or have the necessary perks for maxing their effectiveness.

AFAIK the only perk that has anything to do with armours is the Nuclear Physicist perk, which solely affects the PA. In NV, you could easily build a light armour character that had considerable benefits over heavy / medium armour. In FO4 I have to shoot myself in the leg, because the only reason not to use the PA is opt out.

I don't mind the retcon, it's the ease of getting it and the abundance of cores that bother me. Power armor should have been only for players joining the BOS faction and should still have had some kind of both training and stat requirements.

Well if the cores lasted "forever" i guess they would make the PA super hard to get because unlike the recent titltes the PA is actually great.

I don't mind the change myself but i would love for the cores to last a little longer BUT being far harder to get.

Also the cores are all pre war? If so i guess they should be worn out quite a bit after all these years?

I think that the Power Armor now is actually closer to the lore in the protection aspect (it was supposed to defeat chinese armor in Alaska, and yet you could die to far weaker weapons than AFV autocannons, laser cannons, etc.), I think the walking tank aesthetic and mechanics are pretty much perfect. The fusion cores thing is just more Bethesda shoehorning, and that I don't understand... But I guess I'd much prefer it as a very rare kind of thing, obtainable only if you attained a high rank in the Brotherhood, or found it in a few abandoned bunkers, research facilities, etc.

The whole, look, theres one with a minigun just laying around in the first 10 min is just bullshit.

But yeah, discussion for nerds, I guess...

I think there are many ways to balance it, outside of fusion cores. I mean, it could have high skill requirements, like in repair, science or what ever ... oooh damn, Fallout 4 got rid of skills :twitch:

Anyway, instead of fusion cores they could have used something like spare parts, electronics, servos, hydraulic fluid, perk requirements etc. If the PA was to powerfull, they could give some enemies weapons to fight power armors as well. No clue. The Power Armor in F1 and F2 didn't made you invincible either.

First, it should've been much rarer. Not getting it for free together with a core at the very beginning of the game, that's beyond stupid. It should be a reward you're looking forward to receiving at the end of a long and difficult series of quests. They could've made a series of trials before you can join the BoS and get your PA, but in this case, you should get a T-45 first, and then get better ones as you rise through ranks.
Also, no raider power armors, that's just stupid to the extreme. NCR was not capable of making them work, so they stripped the servomotors and used them as well-armored shells, while a bunch of complete retards have them in perfect working condition? Bull. Shit. And no Atom Cats. Power Armor is NOT hot fucking rod.

Yeah, when I discovered the Atom Cats I just went "Nope. Just nope", and proceeeded to murder every last one of them just to spiritually spite whoever at Bethesda had this clusterfuck of an idea. But I guess "it's fun har har", like the goddamn kid in the fridge...

It really seems as though Beth's game designers skipped gameplay 101 with this one - you know give them the really good shit later on. build a sense of achievement and development and all that:P i mean if your gonna give me Power Armor in the first ten minutes what the flying fu** will you be giving me in the last ten minutes..Liberty Prime on steroids..oh wait.

That's because they're appeasing the instant gratification crowd. As sung by Queen, "I want it all! I want it all! I want it all! And I want it NOW!"

And yet Freddy gave us so much, and they so little:P

they could have made like military grade cores that you can buy for like 10k caps and recharge some how and when you find in military bases they are usually low or the ones you find in generators are industrial grade cores that burn out quickly and cant be recharged

They could make all the Power Armors as they are with t-51b being the only exception by not consuming Fusion Cores except when using Jet Pack.

Make t-51b, high level loot and done. That way it would be easy to explain why T-51b was "the pinnacle PA" even with worse stats than t-60.

Then Adv.PA using Fusion Cores would be a bearable retcon...

Wasn't the T-60 the next gen armor? Been a while since i was looking it up but i think it was the new stuff they were working on?

Fallout 4 itself seems to be confused on the matter. In one of the loading screens it says that T-51 is the pinnacle of Power Armor technology, but then in another one it says that T-60 was developed after T-51 and used after liberation of Anchorage.
So they are extremely inconsistent there.
They should've just went with T-51 staying as the best pre-war armor and T-60 being a bulked up T-45 which is supposed to close the gap between the two, and be more affordable than T-51.
