Question to all vegetarians/vegans out there...

I've been wondering... why are there vegetarian/vegan products out there that imitate meat? They look like meat, they try to mimic meat flavor, but really, whats the point if you have sworn off of meat for whatever reason, well, especially for ethical reasons. I just don't get it. Wouldn't eating fake meat defeat the whole purpose of being a vegetarian/vegan? Just doesn't make sense.

Now, I know there are people out there that don't eat these fake meat products, but there are others that do. I just want to know why.

Some people are vegetarians because of the health issues. My guess is they eat vegetables that taste like meat.

Because it's not a dead animal but you still enjoy the taste of meat (or in this case, almost meat)? I don't get how you think it defeats the purpose. I guess a lot of people know how to cook certain things involving meat, and quorn for example is an easy way to replace minced meat etc.

I can get voof's point. When I was vegetarian, I had lots of friends who always said "I stopped eating meat two years ago, and once I tried putting a steak in my mouth, and actually it tasted like shit. I mean, its a dead living being!"

Most of vegetarians always keep whining that we just like meat because we are socially adapted, but if we stopped eating, we would no longer be able to like its taste.

Dead Guy just said it - you get the meat without killing an animal. That's the "ideological" purpose of being a vegetarian (not killing animals for food), is it not?

The fuck? Are you this stupid or is it an act? It's to make sure you can get the same pleasure as before without unnecessary suffering for the animals. The same way there are non-alcoholic beer.

I don't get how you think it defeats the purpose.
If you are abstaining from eating animals, or the idea of eating animals disgusts you, then why would you seek out something that is like the flesh of an animal but is actually not. It's like in many Western nations eating cats and dogs is taboo, but there are no fake cat or dog meat products. The eating of animals is a sort of taboo for vegetarians and vegans, so why seek out an imitation. There are plenty of non-animal related food that can be just as tasty or tastier than meat.

Hey, its a legitimate question. Vegetarians and vegans have sworn off meat, find the idea disgusting, so why would someone eat this fake meat. Is it because they are not as strong in their convictions? Or even a question to companies, why would a company want to market something to a group of people who have declared a disliking of said or similar product. I don't know. I suppose it is just a way to eat guilt free, though I still don't see why they would enjoy the taste, or imitation taste, of dead animals.

Ok so it's not an act.

Eating meat is not taboo for a vegetarian or a vegan, I have no idea what kind of vegans you have spoken to but many understands why people eat it, because it's tasty and a great way to gain proteins. Thus they see how a similar product would benefit them without resorting to dead animals, which they see as morally unsound.

true vegetarians (ideological vegetarians, not the ones who are just because of health issues) despise the pleasure for meat.

And people who don't drink alcoholic beverages usually don't this because they want and because they think its politically incorrect.

You don't think that's pretty subjective?

Quorn is mushroom and soy is a bean. I fail to see how they are animal-related. The consistency is easy to work with and they are easy to spice.

yes they do. I lived with one, dated one, and I am friend of a bunch of them.
Just make sure to check if all the vegetarians are vegetarians by the same reason, and if all of them think exactly one like the other, which is probably what you think. I guess you'll have a surprise

She is a vegetarian because the meat industry is sick, not because there is anything inherently wrong with eating meat. And so is most vegetarians. At least everyone I know. They realize humans are omnivores.

Yeah, it is. I suppose I should have wrote that there are non-animal related food that have the same benefits of eating meat.

Most vegetarians I have met like the taste of meat but avoid it as much as possible (they actually eat meat sometimes) because meat products make a larger environmental impact. You could call them eco-vegetarians.

well, most of vegetarians you know were raised in a pretty different society and culture than the vegetarians I know, so probably their views are pretty different on the matter "eating food that tastes like meat its reasonable for vegetarians". There's no point discussing that.

question to me is: I think if you are a vegetarian, of course its still better for you not eating any meat and eating something that tastes like meat, than eating meat, but its kind of contradictory. It does not mean you are hypocrite and an asshole.

Flexitarianism, aka eating a normal diet. Sheesh, I don't eat meat everyday, I certainly don't consider myself semi-vegetarian.
