R.I.P. Robin Williams

As the thread title indicates, Robin Williams is dead. Not much has been said as of yet, but apparently he took his own life earlier today, possibly connected to his dealing with serious depression lately. =(

The man was one of the most versatile actors I had ever seen, both doing good and bad guys. However, I think most folks will remember him as primarily an actor who brought a lot of laughter and happiness to a generation of americans. A man that stressed humor during a time of pessimism brought about by cold war tension, a punishing recession, political scandal, the AIDS epidemic, terrorism, etc.

yeeeeeaaaah, he was a really great actor. I love so many of his movies. Its sad that he had to go like that, particularly someone that managed to entertain so many people with his acting.

I will really miss him.

On the topic at hand, Robin Williams was just an all-around good guy. I grew up in San Francisco, and I'm just about the only person I know who *didn't* run into him on one of his regular jogs and come out of it with some awesome anecdote. He struggled with depression for a long time, but for all that, he was pretty good to his fans. And he named his daughter after Princess Zelda-- how cool is that?

Not that I'm anybody, but my heart goes out to his family. At the very least, I'm glad that initial reports seem to indicate a peaceful end, on his own terms.

Man, of all the actors and comedians that could have died why did it have to be Robin Williams? He is an important part of my childhood and my college years, when I had to pull an all nigther I always left Mork and Mindy on the background, I even liked Mrs Doubtfire for all the hate it gets nowadays. Robin Williams may not have appeared in that many great movies in this last few years but he will still be missed, he was a funny man, a person that obviously went through a lot in his life and made millions laugh.
THe world is a little less funny today.

Yeah, it sucks. A lot. Shitty morning, going back to bed.

Yeah, when you put it "Not that I'm anybody", I feel the same, because I wanted to comment along the lines of "As someone who goes through depression..." but then I thought, who am I to compare myself to him? Whether or not I'm even factoring in his accomplishments and the (literal) LIFETIME of material of his that I grew up with, who am I to compare my bouts of depression with his? I mean, clearly I'm still here, so it hasn't led me to suicide, so does my experience with depression even come close to what he had to deal with? I wanted to say I could sympathize, but it felt like it might be insulting to suggest that I could understand what he went through at all.

Still, the most important part is that he will indeed be missed. I can't even say that 6 years after the passing of Carlin that I "got over it", so this is likely going to be the same. =/

Depressing news. Not a very nice thing to learn as soon as you get from the bed.

I'd be lying if I said I've seen many of his films - in reality, I've seen only a handful - but I had a lot of respect for the man. I always felt he was under-appreciated, though, whether by the Academy or by the contemporary audience. I'm probably wrong, but that's the impression I had.

In any case, RIP funny man.

Dead Poet's Society stands as my eight favorite movie of all time. Not a place earned lightly. Besides that there's Life according to Garp, Jumanji, Good Will Hunting, Hook, Aladdin and Insomnia, which are all either good or great. And he can even show up in the middle of a shitty movie like Night at the Museum and brighten your day. Although I wasn't following his recent works these years, I doubt that he had left the prime of his actual abilities. It saddens me that we'll never get to see the swan song he deserves. But the good thing about being an actor is that you never truly die. He will live on, probably longer than we will. His name won't be spoken for the last time yet, for many decades to come.

Fuck, I really thought it was a hoax. Dude has been said to be dead like a gazillion times before.

Ah well, he was a very entertaining fella. He did some awesome stand up comedy shows next to his movies (which weren't always that good, imo).

RIP.

I liked him as a kid. Then I sortof grew out of his comedies, and re-discovered him as a 'serious-guy' in Good Will Hunting. Not surprised that he struggled, many do, including people who are funny (something that seems to surprise a lot of people indeed :D)

Edit 2: Drastically retooled my list, which it was due for.

I've been curious about his stand-up, but never looked very hard for it. Found some recent stuff, but it seems, for long-running comedians, their "recent stuff" almost always sucks compared to their old stuff. Obviously also a matter of taste, but guys like Hicks or Carlin, their never bits are almost unwatchable to me - after seeing their old stuff :I

Point being.. I should probably check Williams old stuff out.. :D

Dead Poet's Society stands as my eight favorite movie of all time.

Dead Poet's Society is indeed a very good movie, but I just saw it way too much, especially at school. For some reason teachers who think they are cool also think they should show this movie during one of their classes. Boring.

So what is you guys' favorite Robin Williams movie?

Of course for me it's Dead Poet's, but Jumanji is one of the few things I'm really nostalgic for. Good morning vietnam is another classic.

And now that I think about it I believe I've never seen the original Aladdin. I only ever had the one with the bandits and the golden hand on videotape.

way to many to really chose one as the absolute best. Obviously there are some that have more quality then others, but overall, I think most of them are a good experience. I mean I enjoy Hook for different reasns then Dead Poet's or Jumanji, which I saw in cinema even, good old childhood memories! Although, it wouldn't be fair to forget Dustin Hoffman in Hook, as he did at least an equal job to Robin Williams. But If I would have to be really specific, I would say movies that have a strong message are the best ones in my opinion, like Dead Poets, or God Will Hunting, so the movies where he is playing more serious roles.

Personally, I think his best roles were those that showed what a good actor he was and not per se what a good comic. So my top 3 looks something like this:

[1] One Hour Photo
[2] Insomnia
[3] World's Greatest Dad

'One Hour Photo' is sort of comparable to 'The Truman Show' and 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' (Jim Carrey) in that it shows a comedian doing things you never thought he could pull off.
