Recent movies (last 20 years or so) that you'd consider a classic or a potential future classic?

R.Graves

I'm not gonna set a definition for what a classic is.
There are different kinds. I mean robocop is not classic in the same way that goodfellas is. Then we have cult classics... it's best we each go from our own frame of reference I'd say.

I guess there's three types if we had to force it.

Blockbuster type: made a load of money on release and has mass appeal

Niche type: made for a more niche audience. It wouldnt have near the same mass appeal as say die hard or predator.

Cult type: didn't make bank on release but found its audience later on home video release. This would be your clerks or you evil deads. I'd be surprised to see someone name one of these from the last 20 years.

Anyways 15 years ago this barrel of fun was unleashed.

This is... it's just great. I've got mixed feelings about all of its sequels, especially 2 and 5, but this one is just great. It's got everything a blockbuster type classic needs. Great action, fun story, a good villain, likeable characters, and a memorable score. Not much more I can say, really.

Here are four movies I consider classics released in the past two decades.

Fuck yeah gran torino. Where the main character can literally be defined as "a racist with a heart of gold". Thanks for reminding me to plop that bluray into my amazon cart.

If you like Clint Unforgiven is a must.

Naw but they got it up at wal mart. Should I get it?

At least watch the first two. It goes off into B movie territory around Phantasm 5 (Ravager) but it's pretty good. If you watched Tremors 6 watch the Phantasm series. Also John Dies at the End.

I take it you didn't like the political & social commentary it was making.
Not really there wasnt any social commentary to speak of. Aside from the scene with the cop that overall feels out of place. Or if there was maybe that's why the plot feels so jilted and forced.

Maybe Black Hawk Down but I'm not saying it's a perfect movie, just that in terms of spectacle it's pretty high up there especially I guess when seen in a movie theater. In a way that BHD isn't politically correct sort of makes it interesting to look at.

Aside from the scene with the cop that overall feels out of place.
The beginning part? She was using the race-card to avoid a paper trail (the cop wanted to see his ID). The whole scene was a play on western feminism aligning themselves with disparaged groups when it's convenient (cop scene), and kicking them to the curb when the gig is up (when he asks her to find the keys so they can leave).

I guess but that really feels like grasping at straws for symbolism. Overall the plot suffers in favor of wierd awkward forced social commentary. Example: all the white people literally turning into black people. a allegory for cultural appropriation i guess. The movie adresses this in dialogue. Plot reason given: "lol who knows"
That's not good writing. In fact it's kind of shit.

Not cultural appropriation but more so the consumption of black bodies. It's a throw back to the slavery era and how they're desired for their physical attributes. Near the end remember how the daughter is researching college athletes and potential draft picks?

The grandfather is obsessed with being a fast runner so he pilots a black man (seen running at night). The grandmother wants to be young and beautiful again so she pilots a young, college aged black woman (seen admiring her reflection by Chris).

The women at the party were groping Chris and touching him inappropriately because they saw him as a plaything and not a human being. The other black guy he sees at the party is literally just a stud (mandingoism).

The art dealer, Jim, was a parallel to people that claim to not be racist but actively and enthusiastically participate in a system that preys on black people. The whole movie is basically "it's ok to be black but only when white people are in control - literally."
