It Wandered In From the Wastes
Well, I am bored on the laptop, just want some DOS games. Not sure what to get, though. I've been playing Daggerfall for a while.

Does anyone have a few favorite DOS games?

If so, tell me what they're all aboot!

This thread has no point if everyone is just going to list a bunch of DOS games. Pick a few favorites and tell us about them, or this one goes vatsies.

I'm fond of...a lot of DOS games. But in particular, the Realms of Arkania series (oh my there he goes again) stand out. The TB combat system is a bit eh and a slog at times, but the RPG system is great, it uses a great combination of camera angles throughout, the stories are your typical P&P-fare...I just love 'em...

Everyone else has already said much of my choices, but here's some other games I remember:

SkyRoads
I'm still addicted to this game. :) It's kind of hard to explain, basically you're in a craft jumping around a platform track in space. You have to reach the end of the track before your ship runs out of fuel. Different color track pieces have different effects, such as refueling your craft, speeding you up, or killing you instantly. Music is pretty kickin'.

Descent
I think this was one of the first true 3D shooters out there at the time. I don't know what else to say, pretty fun.

Duke Nukem
The first Duke game, side-scroller. The level design is pretty damn good, fun and addictive. And come on, PC speaker sounds!

Elder Scrolls: Arena
If you like Daggerfall, chances are you'll like Arena. Same kind of deal.

Lemmings
It's Lemmings, little green haired creatures that want nothing more than to hurl themselves off ledges to their certain death. But we can't have that can we? Puzzle game, if you don't already know.

Terminal Velocity
Another 3D shooter, kind of like Descent, but you get to fly around in more open areas. Get's kind of annoying and challenging at times, but I remember playing it as a kid so it goes on the list.

Wolfenstein 3D
The first-person shooter. It basically started it all. Even though it gave me terrible motion sickness at times (and I rarely get motion sickness) I still love it. If you haven't tried it, try it.

Spear of Destiny
Something of a sequel to Wolfenstein 3D. If you couldn't get enough of Wolf3D, then here you go.

(Edited to not piss BN off with lists.)

Wing Commander 1 to 4

I always have loved space simulation games, I just am not always very good at them.

The first games are rather cartoon like while the later of course feature the FMV.
While the plot may not be the best I still think it is pretty well told.

Some of the missions can be very hard, fortunate there are branching paths that can still lead to a victory.

Wing Commander Privateer

Wing Commander meets Elite.
What I liked about Privateer is how you forge your own path in the WC universe while trying to find out more about an alien artifact you have been given as collateral on some business deal and everyone seems to be after.

You can just play like Elite and ignore the plot but then you would miss out on an interesting story.

It plays like Wing Commander regarding the action part but with the addition trading segment and of course modification of your own ship or buying a complete new ship.

Strike Commander

Sort of like Wing Commander and Privateer but then with jet fighters.
You have to manage a mercenary squadron while carrying out missions for countries, corporations and individuals all over the world.

Strangely, sometimes the missiles are rather useless.

It is not really a hard flight simulator.

The Lost Vikings

Combining platform action with puzzle solving.
You control three different characters in this game that each have a unique ability like offense, defense and jumping.
Puzzles start out simple but later on become fiendishly difficult.
Also some fun bantering amongst the characters.

Bioforge

Another one of those games that tries to be like a movie, but hear me out, this one actually does feel somewhat epic.
The game is a combination of action and adventure with some puzzling here and there.

It has a forced 3d perspective like the old Resident Evil games.

Sim City

Okay not really much of a game but occasionally its nice to build something instead of seeking the destruction of an enemy.

Unfortunate I haven't gotten far without using a money cheat yet.

Star Trek 25th Anniversary & Star Trek Judgment Rites

Being a big Star Trek fan, or at least used to be, it was only a matter of time before I tried these games, and I still think they are some of the best sci fi adventure games around, not to mention live up to the franchise it is based on.

Some puzzles can be a little tricky though.

Next to the puzzle solving some stories also contain parts in which you fight enemy ships in a Wing Commander like way.

This one might require some trial and error and the occasional faq file.

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis

One of the best adventure games around IMO and the game the last Indiana Jones movie should have been based on.
The characters are spot on and the mystery is a really intriguing one.

Day of the Tentacle

Another great Lucasarts adventure, it is a sequel to Maniac Mansion but you do not have to play that game to understand this one.
It is sort of like a cartoon involving time travel, the American founding fathers, a mad scientist, and his mutant tentacle creation who is determined to take over the world after gaining super intelligence by swallowing toxic waste.

Blood's a brilliant one.

Mixes all the great elements of Duke Nukem 3D into a darker atmosphere. The humour is a bit darker than that of Duke 3D but it's still great and the gameplay is smooth. It comes with a very interesting arsenal (weirdest I've seen in an FPS) and most weapons have alternate fires too. My absolute favourite thing about the game is the level design, it's so well thought out and a lot more fun to play around in than Duke Nukem 3D (in my opinion, of course). A lot of the levels are based on horror movies, and it's chock full of Easter Eggs. :)

The dicks who own the franchise still haven't released the Source Code for it. But it's up on gog.com and works fine in DOSBox.

Huh, I got this too when I was playing it a while back. I barely ever get motion sickness from FPS games but sitting at my computer playing Wolfenstein 3D for a bit over two hours makes me start to feel dizzy.

Since the other posts took a dip in the vats, I must add this:

Wasteland
Because it's freakin' Wasteland. If you haven't played it, you must. Fallout is the spiritual successor to Wasteland, so...
You create (or just use the default) team of Desert Rangers, and go investigate a series of disturbances in the post-nuclear apocalyptic wasteland of the southwestern United States. The interface may take a bit of getting used to, and my word of advice is forget the mouse, just use the keyboard. Oh boy, just thinking about this game makes me want to play it. I had to force myself to stop playing it before because I wasn't getting any work done, so I must resist the urge.

I've been playing this game a lot lately:

Dungeon Keeper
In my opinion, one of the best strategy games ever. Real time game play. You're an evil um, dungeon keeper, and you build a dungeon, attract creatures to said dungeon to work and fight for you, and you conquer the land, leaving your evil presence where ever you go.

Yeah, been switching between Dungeon Keeper and Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun, but Tiberian Sun was only released for Windows.

Syndicate wars
Excellent team based cyberpunk top down shooter with cool story and atmosphere. Fully destructible enviroments and big guns. Hell, minigun is lightweight in this game.

Settlers 2 gold.
Sort of city simulator with combat. Its all about logistics. Hard to say anything else just try it out.

Theme hospital
Build and manage your own hospital with bullfrogs tongue in cheek style of humour. Propably one of the most addicting games ive played. If you enjoyed dungeon keeper this is must try.

Tyrian2000
Some may said it's a Raptor clone, but all in all it's a great game. Sunk endless hours as a kid
The incredible machine 1&2
For the sake of engineer puzzles :)
Golden Axe
A true classic, funny it can be played even in 4 colors depth
Dynablaster
Another classic, pure arcade one. Multiplayer rocks in this one :)

The shooter talk is reminding me of somewhat obscure FPS/RPG Strife, which was made using the DOOM engine. Regular DOOM shooty fun, fascinating setting, good fun. Can generally recommend it, easy-to-miss-gem.

Wasteland, obviously.

The original Prince of Persia, for the generation of gamers that won't quit in disgust when they die and have to start a level over for the third (or thirtieth) time.

Do the System Shocks count?

... There were only two posts with a total of two named games above yours?

MDK. I never finished it, but I love to play it again from time to time. Graphic, gameplay and general ideas are pretty nice. Also I got the special edition of that game, which rocks. :>

There were more, but I removed them in a rage of removing all posts that do not adequately explain their picks as the first post suggests. My dear Per.

Strife is pretty awesome, I must say. It's quite easy to get lost with what you're meant to be doing though. Even with the objectives tracking thing. :)

System Shock is a DOS game, System Shock 2 is Windows.

So I noticed when I continued down the list of new topics. Well, Wasteland is unmissable because it's undeniably one of the earliest and best CRPGs with skills and a persistent, open world. Top notch writing and world building crammed into an engine that ran nicely on a C64.

Prince of Persia is a painful platformer with groundbreaking animations and rudimentary in-game storytelling. A different design philosophy compared to the most recent part(s?) of the series.

System Shock <s>and System Shock 2 are</s> is a sf/horror shooter<s>s</s> with modest RPG elements, pitting you against one of the best characters in computer gaming and making you leap in fright every now and then. The first game can feel a bit primitive, <s>the second is awesome with awesome on top</s> but still holds up.

Darklands

RPG set in 15th century Holy Roman Empire, it has an excellent character generation and extensive dialogue choices.

Bioforge

An amazingly brutal and beautiful cyberpunk action-adventure game that unfortunately never got the sequel we were promised.

Wasteland
<<<<<< :D

Twilight: 2000
If you like Wasteland or Fallout (duh), you'll enjoy this. It's post-nuclear, it's isometric, you make your team. It's a pretty fun game. I really suggest everyone tries it at least once.

Conan: The Cimmerian
This might sound a tad odd, but hear me out. It's an exciting little RPG. The combat flows pretty well, actually, most of the mechanics do. It's no System shock, but, it'll help you out when you're bored at 3 am.

No, you were saying Wasteland is much, much, much, much, much less than a grinning smiley.
