Recreating Fallout 3

Mr. 1010101

First time out of the vault
Okay, before you anyone says this should go with the FO3/NV forums, just listen to what I have to say.

Recently I was able to finally get the FO2 mapper working on our older desktop and I have already created a few new maps when I had an idea. See, I played FO3 first and I enjoyed it, but after playing the originals I have to say that FO2 is my favorite. I can sort-of see why some Fallout veterans don't like the new Bethesda titles. So I thought: What if FO3, using the FO2 mapper, were to be recreated so they would play on FO1 & 2's game engine?

Now I've already about half way done with recreating vault101, but I do have some questions. How should I create new items and critters and such without corrupting the mapper? Has anyone done this before and I just don't know about it? Even though I have no intentions of receiving a profit from this, could I still be sued? Would anyone be interested in seeing this? Because although I'm just planning to recreate FO3's introduction levels, I might want to recreate other parts of the game if enough people take a liking to it.

I don't think remaking it in fallout 2 mapper will do. You gotta fix all the shitty dialouge. Good luck, it'll take a while.

The problem with Fallout 3 is not the lack of original 2d engine, but it's story and general bullshitness. If you would transport that 1:1 to the Fallout 2 engine, it still would be a bad game.

Welcome aboard Mr. 1010101,

you may notice sort of repulsive comments regarding your proposition on this subforum, but don't take them too personally. A lot of people find the plot and dialogs of Fallout 3 being great dissapointment or even insult to their previous gaming experiences (especially those related to the Fallout setting and world). That said, converting FO3 to FO2 in order to have iso-turn-based cRPG with FO3 writing/dialogues probably won't cause celebrations and positive reactions around these parts.

For one reason or another, for your mod you'll have to do most of the stuff yourself. Just sayin', to keep your expectations on the right level. Other than that, you can try modding wikia for any help regarding the Fallout 2 modding. You can find interesting tutorials, explanations and other useful stuff there. And yes, the items can be changed or added, as well as critters. You will most probably not cause any legal actions against you with such a free project.

Good luck, as always.

I kind-of get what you're saying. After playing 1 & 2, 3 just didn't feel as great anymore. Maybe if it wasn't called "Fallout 3." Maybe if it went by a different name.

I do try to respect Fallout by staying true to the original idea as much as I can, but please cut me some slack. It's not like I could of played the originals when it they first came out. (We didn't exactly had a great computer at the time, know what I mean?)

That said, are you saying that this project isn't worth my time?

Only you know if the project you wanna do is worth your time ;)

Personally, I'd like to see Fo3 in this engine with improved/modified dialogue and quests. It doesnt have to "emulate"/copy Fo3 in everything, just in the general settings.

But before you start, make sure you at least understand everything that needs to go into making a mod :)

And if you decide to do it - good luck. Stick to it, finish it and I will play this mod when it comes out :)

As for being sued... I'm guessing Bethesda will not do anything as long as proper credit is given (which should always be the case anyways).

That said, are you saying that this project isn't worth my time?

Depends. On many things. I cannot stress sufficiently how much work would need to go into recreating an entire game. Even with a decent sized team, you are looking at several years of work (depending how much free time you all have/ would have)

If you are an experienced programmer (or are willing to learn the fallout scripting language pretty quickly) then it woud shave some time off the project.

You'd also need artistic skills to add things to the game that are needed (or stick with original art for as much as you can)

As people have mentioned, writing would probably need to be adjusted to fit better with the fallout 2 stucture.

This is a huge undertaking. Make sure you understand what would need to be done before starting.

Now, don't think that I've simply told you not to do this... I've only tried to convey the enormity of the project (from one who knows!)

THat said, if you are passionate and want to do it, then go for it. If you produce results... then you might find people will start to help.

PM me if you want any more advice, guidance.

It's up to you, really. You do understand now that it wasn't the engine that put people off Fallout 3. But, if doing such a mod would give you satisfaction, go for it. On the other hand, if your primary goal is to please people by giving them something they want, a better option would be to work on a F3/NV mod recreating Fallout 1/2, or to learn a useful modding skill (especially scripting) and join one of the established F2 modding teams (BGE, Resurrection, EC: Paris, MR etc.) to help with the development.

A good way to learn a skill is to do a small mod, so you can gain some experience and then showcase it. It could be your F3 in F2 mod, why not?

EDIT--------

Ah, Chris beat me to it. Again.

Of course, if you're more into strategy games and decide that it's too much to mod your own mod, you could always join our team (FoDD team) ;)

Well, as I said earlier, I'm just working on FO3's introduction for the time being. If that turns out to be successful, then I'll consider recreating the rest of the game.

Now if that happened, I'm pretty sure that would take more than a few years for me so I'm more than willing to accept help. Creating the maps? I'm fine doing that alone, even though I know I'm going to have to create some new set pieces. Scripts? ... I've made scripts before but I'm still rusty at it. My biggest concern however would have to be reinventing the dialog and storytelling. (I was more into Math than English back at school. ) That I'm going to have to ask everyone here for suggestions. Just for the intro for now. I'll be sure to add your names to the credits.

I've always wanted to rip the artwork out of Fallout 3, and then re-render it in 3D at the correct angle and lighting, then place it back into the original Fallout world. Some people have taken some of the critter models and have actually done this...but Fallout has a particular visual style (probably brought about by the low end technologies of the mid 90s), things need to be finessed in a particular way.

Some of the Van Buren artwork has been ripped out, but has yet to be used in a mod AFAIK. Van Buren Resources Exported!. It seems that the Van Buren artwork is too low poly to be of any use, buy Fallout 3 doesn't suffer from that problem. So are there any useful programs / plugins for ripping the models and artwork out of Fallout 3?

It might be easier designing a fix for Fallout 3 in which the camera changes to an isometric angle, and the combat takes place in a proper turn based mode. Good luck anyway.

Lexx wants to keep some materials of his latest creation Fallout: Frankenstein! exclusive until premiere :P

I'm using some critters (frogs!) and some scenery art aswell. That way, the artwork atleast has some use, instead of rot on some company guys' HD. :/

Forgive me for the newbie questions, but what would be the best programs I could download from here for creating new critters, items, etc. as well as creating and/or editing pre-existing scripts?

A small preview:

It probably doesn't look that much in the screen, but this is (a part of) one of the maps, where I am using most of the better Van Buren (one could also say Baldurs Gate 3 :>) objects close together. In other places of the game, they are only used here and there as additional details.

Here are some of the new stuff I was planning on creating for the FO2 mapper to use for the mod:

-Human baby
-Vault children
-Various creatures that you only see in FO3 (my argument is that since FO3 takes place in a very different region than the first two games, the wildlife would also be different, so I suppose that would a reason for Bethesda introducing completely new creatures.)
-Vault 101 jumpsuit (male and female)
-Flying Vertibird (not sure if that will end up being technically a critter)
-Assault Rifle (covert). Special weapon mod that fits the standard assault rifle with a silencer and scope, similar to FO3's "infiltrator." Can't have both the covert mod and extended mags mod on the same weapon though.
-Lever-Action Rifle. .44 magnum.

I'm looking at the different program tools I can download from here, but . . . there so many I need!

I hate being a newbie.
