Relationships Between Vault Residents and Wastelanders

Look, Ma! Two Heads!
Is it just me or do the vaults seem to have some kind of bigotry against wastelanders?

In Fallout, you get exiled from the vault at the end simply because you faced the worst the wasteland has to offer and you have changed. As the intro for Fallout 2 said, "in confronting that which they feared, he had become something else in their eyes, and no longer their champion."

In Fallout 2, when you enter Vault City for the first time, your reputation is automatically set to anti-pathy. The residents also don't tolerate mutants or ghouls, refusing them entry into the city.

Then there's Vault 101 in Fallout 3. The overseer hates you and your father simply because you're from the outside. During Trouble on the Homefront, certain residents villify and pass judgment on you simply because you've been outside or are from the outside.

Seriously, what do vaults have against the people of the wasteland? They've forgotten that lots of wastelanders are originally from the vaults and left them once their purpose had been fulfilled. Ghouls and super mutants were once humans as well, it's not their fault the radiation or FEV changed them into what they are. Humanity only survived for so long because of their ability to adapt to change. But those who dwell in the vaults even long after the war have it so easy. Sure, maybe the wastelanders don't have pure unfiltered air, water, or food, but they survive against all odds. If humanity's prehistoric ancestors had the attitudes of those who live in the vaults, 101 in particular, we would all have gone extinct millions of years ago!

It's like some kind of racism, similar to passing judgment on someone negatively because of the color of their skin, their religion, their gender, etc.

Vaults serve the purpose to keep their inhabitants alive for an extended period of time. They're a closely knit group by necessity, and they're interested in the most stable options. It is entirely understandable that they don't like wastelanders. After all, they don't really know much about the wasteland for the most part, so it's a really big unknown to them. All they hear are stories of raiders and monsters, who can blame them, who have been raised in an almost sterile environment of stability, of being scared of the outer world?

Since Vaults are so seperate from each other, there is no way for them to have one unified attitude towards wastelanders. I assume some would be friendly towards wastelanders, whereas others would adopt a bigotry of sorts.

I guess since Vaults tend to be very orderly and lawful, whereas the outside world is rough to say the least, many would take negative stances towards wastelanders

The Overseer has a duty to follow the Vault's experiment.

Fallout 2 establishes that Vault 13 is designed for prolonged isolation. If the Vault Dweller comes in and informs the residents that life on the outside is plausible, the experiment fails.

I think this intro explains it quite well.
If i was a vault dweller I would be totally terrified of that happening to me.

Well, Wastelanders are filthy primitives who exist solely to serve the whims of the Raiders. They're tainted by superstition, ignorance, radiation, and FEV.

Vault Dwellers are superior beings by virtue of intelligence, education, technology and lack of mutation.

I don't see what's so hard to understand.

Ugh, I can't abide those Wastelanders. DISGUSTING CREATURES.

Vault dwellers are isolated and their lives are very different to those living in the Wastes. Their lives are much easier and it's understandable they'd be wary of Wastelanders. You'd be too if you lived in a safe bunker with all the comforts and necessities provided for you.

But...raiders are wastelanders.

Well, one group is human and the other is a collection of filthy mutants! Sadly, President Richardson was assassinated by one of the primitives.

But...raiders are wastelanders.

Superior Wastelanders! Beings who mop the floor with stupid Brotherhood of Steel and Enclave!

*weeps at so many killed by the Vault Dweller and Lone Wanderer*

I would have loved to see "vault rangers" in Fallout 4. People in blue/yellow Hazmat suits, carrying modern weapons and scouting the areas around the vault. Seeing the familiar colors would have encouraged the players to approach, only to be met with dissuassive fire. You couldn't talk to them unless you'd show that you have something to put on the table.
Would have been an original "raider" faction, and a potentially interesting addition to the relationships between the vaults and the wasteland.
