The third installation of the article dubbed RPGs of 2005 have arrived, this time around Brian 'Dhruin' Turner of RPGDot talks about titles such as Geneforge 3, Gothic 3 etc. Here's a snibblet about RPGs in 2006:
Looking beyond all the games we've covered, there are a couple of RPGs officially announced and several more in development that haven't been officially unveiled. Irrational's BioShock (a spiritual successor to System Shock), BioWare's second original property Dragon Age and Obsidian's Neverwinter Nights 2 are sure to be worth watching. Arkane is working on a project using the Source engine and Divine Divinity 2 should be deep in development. Fallout 3 and Baldurs Gate 3 are somewhere in the pipeline, even if full production hasn't commenced.
Ah yes, the holy grail..

I wonder if Obsidian will manage to do a Neverwinter Nights game that doesn't suck. And I also wonder if BioWare will manage to do any game that doesn't suck.

NwN sucked when it was originally released in 1993, and it still sucks 11.5 years later.

On the other hand, I think BioWare is going to strike RPG gold with Jade Empire. I can't help but picture JE as a KoTOR clone that replaces all of the boring over used cliche Starwars nonsense with fresh and interesting Kung Fu cliche. Being a huge fan of martial arts flicks, I'm already on the band wagon for this one. I am hesitant about the real time combat, though. I can understand why you would want reflex based RT combat in a martial arts game, but the lack of true TB combat was one of the biggest problems I had with KoTOR.

You gotta be kidding me. I've seen two long video presentations of this thing and all they were showing was lots and lots of combat and about ten seconds of flirting with a princess or something.
One video at least was with a BioWare employee presenting the game and all the cool features, which were all combat-related.
If anything this game is an Action-Adventure like the Legacy of Kain games, albeit with more sophisticated combat.
That's what the game is about. *sings* Everybody is Kung-Fu fighting!

You do realise that Jade Empire is no more an RPG than Mortal Kombat was?

did anyone play a decent RPG lately?
actually that's a stupid question, because nothing good came after fallout2

but basically there are very few good RPG's out there that can match fallouts....why does every computer company insists on going mainstream? i mean, even diablo wasn't considered mainstream when it came out, so??

Jade Empire seems to be a game that's improved on the type of gameplay in Fable.

I had fun with that, even though it promised the sky and delivered the gutter. So Jade Empire seems right up my alley.

I knew defication was referred to as business by some people because of historical reasons, but doing business up your alley just doesn't sound right.

You are such a sick fuck.

I dont know Ratty, I always give Bioware credit. They have been around for some time. They keep chuggin along. I say SS and KOTOR are definately GOOD games.

KotOR was good, yeah, but certainly not good enough to warrant all that hype and public fellating developers received for it. It annoys me how all reviewers failed to mentioned the game's innumerable flaws such as bugginess and awful engine, and always kept bringing up "classic BioWare gameplay" like it's one of KotOR's stronger points. Throngs of fanboys and journalists exalt BioWare like they are RPG gods descended from heavens to grace us with their presence; which is partially right, since that's all BioWare has ever graced us with - presence, instead of substance and actual game design skill. Though all their games are reasonably enjoyable (yes, even NWN), they really represent a low for the CRPG genre that has seen such marvelous masterpieces as Fallout and Planescape: Torment.

what about Arcanum ?
From Troika Games. I found it quite enjoyable, though it hasn't got much against Fallout. Fallout has it's special.. magical air to it (a bit toxical and addictive)

mmm addictive poison...

I strangely got overaddicted to Eve Online which is a RPG though completely different than Fallout. Sometimes the game isn't even that fun, but it is so f*cking addictive. I hope they ever release a Fallout MMO since that will give me a good excuse to stop playing Eve Online.

Torment... TORMENT!!! Completely different style, but it's still an awesome RPG, unless you don't like reading poetic literature ;).

Torment's engine was based off Baldur's Gate's engine made by BioWare. That counts right, Ratty?
