Rumors on the Game Informer article

I doubt if you could do much in realtime. Especially if you have to select particular targets (rather than just pressing a button to attack as in most FPS games) after selecting your mode of fire, etc..

I hope the system is the way I'm thinking... If you just click to fire your gun, swing your weapon, etc.. then it will be very strange. Like Fallout when it's your turn vs Diablo when it's not.

I want to see this, cause this must be really excellent - Kralmelkor used to be rather hard-core fallout fan, not some hype-maker...And now he's talking like this:

I can pretty much assure you people that you will love this game.

...or he is a 'plant', someone from Beth maybe and now he's making a hype???

I just spotted this on the Bethsoft forums.

It works similar in means of gameplay when you enter combat mode in Fallout 1.

I actually don't understand the switching between RT and TB.

It seems like a different balance of these two.

Judging from what I've read on the forums, the game seems to be in real time (like the original Fallout games) until you enter combat. Then it switches to your turn. You take your turn, using up your AP's, and then... in order to avoid the player having to tediously wait while 100 enemies take their turn individually, the game switches to Real Time until your turn comes up again.

If this is the way it is, then it's fine by me. Players might be able to use this to their advantage by quickly running after they spend their action points, but similar abuse of the TB system was done in the original Fallout games as well. (speed runs anyone?)

if you're right, what we essentially get is turn based (not hybrid) and then we get kind of a limited real time whilst you wait for enemies to use their precision shots. Then once your points are charged back up, you go back into turnbased to do special shots or whatever. So it just keeps you doing something whilst enemies take their turns.

In that case, it's essentially turn based with a minigame to play whilst you wait for the others to take their turn. In which case, it's a fucking turn based combat system with more stuff to do in the middle. Which, well, almost sounds like an improvement on FO1 and 2.

Surely it can't be like that.

NB only true if the game is designed to go into turnbased - i.e. it's not a conscious choice to 'pause' the game, in which case, it's the TB which sounds more like the 'tacked on' minigame bit.

I also hope for tthat, anyway the game seems to be better than I expected, it still seems to be worse than Fallout 1&2 better though than tictacs and pos. I just want to see this damn article myself

Anyway the Turn Based simulation is quite nice thing on their part, they clearly made it for us - hard core fans

Eh nevermind my last post. I forgot they said you could tackle combat in first person mode in real time. :(

Well I still hope they can balance it such that if someone wants to, they can just use their turns during combat and then just heal using their AP's instead of running, if that's what they choose. I mean you shouldn't be force to play in real time if you dont' want to do so, but if the option is there so that you can run away a bit, or even use it entirely, then I guess that's alright too... I just don't see how TB combat can ever work, or even possibly look good, in first person.

I'll just hope they've done something new that actually seems to work. Hope hope hope HOPE it's the turn based with RT while you wait. xD

Sounds to me like the game will be real-time and that you can pause the game to pull of some aimed shots.
Then it's back to real time while your APs slowly regenerate, there will be no sense of turns being taken.

Indeed, like bullet time in Max Payne. Something to use to get out of a pinch, but not something you will use continually.

So it's FPP/RT, oblivion with guns, no more no less. Wai.

Bugger. So we get TB but it's kinda like, using a special move, and you can blast through the game completely ignoring it (implying combat could become unbalanced and easy if you choose to take a targeted shot). Meh.

RT+P, an action point system that is just a time delay, First person/Third person, levelcap 20.

this is FUBAR.

it'd have been fine with me if it had been a game outside the series, like tictacs or PoS, but as FO3 this isn't acceptable.

"Game starts with your birth and your mother's death in a vault hospital. This is essentially the character customization part of the game. Your father hands you up to have your DNA analyzed and you get to pick out all your character traits. Your dad takes off his mask to reveal similar traits to the ones you picked. "

One thing I AM looking forward to is making an intelligence 1 character and hearing Liam Neeson speaky dumb talk.

Your dad is wearing a mask ?!
OMG First PERSON BIRTH !!!!! wheeeee :P not
and doesnt it seem stupid that dna is the only thing responsible for your stats, skills and traits :P

DNA is responsible for almost everything. But who the player is to modify it? :?

So we basically have someone posting their interpretation of a magazine article that a reporter wrote most likely after being shown the game by a marketing guy who'd been briefed by a dev?

Wow no wonder it sounds confusing.

And the official forums aren't making things any clearer. So when do we get to see a gameplay trailer?

I would have eaten my own poop just to see that one hour demo. Honestly I think that it doesn't sound half as bad as I expected...Can't wait for the scans.

About combat system:

I presume it can be something like mix of system used in Mass Effect (watch some trailers) which looks like action game, but you only choose enemy, and fires - rate of fire, success of atack, hit or missed... it depends on stats and system, not on you.
And mechanism from F:Tactics - action points in RT regenerates like mana, and than allowes you to make action. When you run, in stops to regenerate.
So it could be something like combat start full of action, and then waiting for AP's regeneration to fire each time.

Is it good or bad? I don't know

Hello,

Took some minutes and translated the whole feature-describing parts of the posting into german language.

System. Wie in den beiden ersten Teilen, kannst Du von den 14 Skills, 3 auswählen, welche schneller besser werden.
* Das Kampfsystem wird Vault-tec Assisted Targeting System (V.A.T.S.) genannt. Im Artikel heißt es: “While you’ll certainly be able to tackle enemies in real time using first person shooting, V.A.T.S. lets players pause time and select a target at their leisure” Das Kampfsystem benutzt immernoch Aktionspunkte, aber sie balancieren nur den Kampf, während man immernoch in Echtzeit kämpft.
* Es gibt viele Möglichkeiten das Spiel zu spielen. Rausgehen und Leute vermöbeln, sich Durchschleichen und sich aus der ein oder anderen Situation rausschwaffeln.
* Gegner können Dich anvisieren, wie Du sie. Also können sie spezielle Stellen des Körpers treffen. Das ist ein Extra für das neue Leben-/Verstrahlungssystem. Es gibt auch Acht auf Dinge die verstrahlt sind (z.B. Wasser) und wie sich das auf Dich auswirkt.
* Es gibt wieder ein Karmasystem
* Das Spiel balanciert sich nicht wie Oblivion. Wenn man ein zu schweres Gebiet besucht, kann man sicher sein, dass man das nicht überlebt.
* Das Maximallevel ist 20
* Es gibt ein Spielende, aber es gibt 9-12 Unterschiedliche.
* Es gibt Nichtspieler Charaktere, welche man anheuern kann. Aber es wird wohl nicht gruppenbasiert (wie Fallout2) sein.

Sounds like a crappy battle system. Why bother to use AP when you can just aim with your mouse? Argh sounds like shit, I'm unstoked atm.

It's 50s sci-fi SCIENCE!, DNA is responsible for *everything*.

I find it quite entertaining the PC's sex will only be identified after a DNA check :D

If it's correct then it's a spoiler and I don't want to hear about it... or at least you could up a warning!

 A spoiler...right...Then I guess you will have to wait until "fall 2008" before you ever come back on a fallout related website because there's gonna be more and more "spoilers" in the following days.

Anyway. Do you guys think this one hour demo will be released someday just like they did with the long 5 parts Oblivion video ?
