Should you really even bother?

First time out of the vault
WHY do people go onto this discussion just to flame Fallout 3? If you don't like the game, don't waste your time complaining just to get rads from other Fallout 3 haters and just play the original games. Sure they're a lot different but games evolve and if Interplay still owned fallout, it'll still look exactly the same as it did in the first game, so it's a bit stupid having the same gameplay released everytime. A lot of people don't always want to follow the lore and they want to just play the game. What I'm trying to say is to leave Bethesda alone, they're doing a good job instead of old style turned based combat. Fallout 1 & 2 have aged and they're not playable unless you have played it when it was popular. Otherwise it's just an outdated game.

You need a new avatar; one to match your disposition. :wiggle:

Sometimes I just play through all of the canonical Fallout games, and 3 is the one I consistently have the least fun with (it's pretty okay until you interact with the story in any way.) I can't and won't apologize for not liking it all that much, but "talking about Fallout 3" is the purpose of the "Fallout 3 discussion" forum, right?

I pretty much vehemently disagree with the notion that games can become "outdated" or "not playable" (in any but a technical sense.) I think this is fundamentally a marketing driven notion. They want you to think Deus Ex 2000 isn't worth your time anymore do you need to go buy Deus Ex 2016. But in 15 years they're just going to come back and tell you that Deus Ex 2016 isn't worth your time anymore, so you should go buy Deus Ex 2031. If you buy into this notion, then you're just letting yourself be manipulated by people who are trying to sell you stuff. Better to teach yourself how to appreciate the good parts of games that don't rely on spectacle or novelty, because in that way a good game is good forever.

I mean, the 1987 Wasteland game is still pretty fun (at least, I have more fun with it than Fallout 3.)

I played both Fallout 1 and 2 way after they stopped being "popular", and I enjoyed them far more than the new games.
Anyway, is it worth your time telling us what to talk about?
Also, if you don't care about the lore, do you actually need it to be Fallout? It could be anything else, you'd have just as much fun.

This Beth kids have gotten progrissively less creative with time....

I think for some of these guys Fallout 3 might have been their first *shudder* "RPG". I wonder if it is worth bothering to even post the same thing that hundreds of others have posted? Why bother discussing something? Because it is what the site is for. Whether we (the hivemind?) like Fallout 3 or not. Many do. It doesn't mean all discussion should stop about a game in a sub-forum specifically made for just that. Leave Bethesda alone?

Well, Corporations are people my friend, and so forth. It seems like some people actually believe that.

Speaking as someone whom actually likes Fallout 3, I don't get this mindset. The game is riddled with huge, glaring faults. Why wouldn't I talk about how those faults affect my experience? And the very notion that original Fallout is outdated? You mean a game that is still comparable to many recent, perfectly playable RPG's? THAT Fallout? A game whose design is, thus far, so playable that all modern Fallout did was switch the perspective around and change the combat to real-time? Yeah. Outdated.

Here's a brilliant idea, Moira. Try thinking before you speak. You don't hear this shit about literature. "Oh, Lord of the Rings? Old hat. Fahrenheit 451? Who even READS books that old?" Film. "Citizen Kane and Dr.Strangelove aren't masterpieces anymore because we have new movies." How about music? "Johnny Cash is too old, I'll take Billy Rae Cyrus instead!" Do you see how stupid that sounds? That's your argument. Fallout 1 and 2 were great games. They were also massively flawed in fundamental ways. As is Fallout 3 and even my beloved New Vegas. But they are all equally valid as works of art.

People will continue to analyze and criticize-and rightfully so. For instance, Bethesda's dialogue is some of the stiffest, blandest stuff I've ever heard. But on the flip side, Black Isle games tend to be filled with bouts of misdirection and poor signposting that can often lead to trial and error. That's being fair. And as for "it would be stupid for the gameplay to be the same everytime," Elder Scrolls. Every. Single. Game. Is the freakin' same. I should know-I've played everything from Arena to Skyrim. It's the same game with a modified GUI and sleeker visuals each time. That's it. And they've been around since DOS, so, moot point.

Sorry for ranting, that was awful disorganized of me. Using words like outdated to describe entertainment is just so galling to me.

Before wondering about why people do some stuff, you should wonder IF they actually do those things...

Fallout 3 is my 2nd favorite Fallout. Some of the FO3 haters hate it because they want to fit in. Just stop giving a shit what they do and don't hate.

I'll be honest here, I've played all the Fallout games (except BoS, fuck that shit), and I've noticed a lot of people on here blindly hate Fallout 3 while praising Fallout: New Vegas. You seem to hate Fallout 3 for it's many flaws in both writing and level design, while conveniently ignoring the fact that NV shares many of the same problems.

I'll list a few, for those willing to give a fuck:

-Caesar's Legion, a band of glorified raiders who think they're in rome for some reason, who are rarely armed with more than throwing spears, machetes, and the occasional lever action rifle are somehow able to go head-to-head with the NCR, which is pretty much U.S Government 2.0 and win in several instances.
-Fucking invisible walls everywhere.
-Mr. House is betrayed by Benny, who just shot the player character in the head and took the platinum chip for himself and is planning on taking Las Vegas, completely trusts said player character not two seconds after they had destroyed the securitron gatekeepers and neglected to pay the useless 2,000 cap entry fee (or not, but either way it doesn't matter).

Not to mention NV is just railroaded as fuck for the first act.
>lol ur off the leash now that the tutorial and prologue are over!
>wait where are you going
>AWOOOOOOGA AWOOOOOOGA
>THIS IS HMCS J.E.SAWYER
>YOUR CURRENT COURSE HAS DEVIATED FROM OUR STATED PLANS FOR THIS ADVENTURE
>ALTER YOUR COURSE TO 180 OR WE WILL BE FORCED TO DEPLOY THE CAZADOR SQUADRON SUPPLANTED BY DEATHCLAW INTERDICTION TEAMS. REPEAT. ALTER YOUR COURSE TO 180. FAILURE TO COMPLY WILL RESULT IN YOUR DEATH.

Meanwhile, FO3 is just
>lol ur off the leash now that the tutorial and prologue are over!
>no seriously I can tell you to go over there but I really don't give a shit
>maybe check out that school? there might be lasers or somethin'
>j-jus sayin'. it's not like I want you to have fun or anything!

I'd list more, but I don't really have the time to type out a 50 paragraph long list of all the things that are wrong with the game.

People hate a game praised by most people because they want to fit in? Sounds counter productive to me.

Eh, fine, you want lasers for fun right off the tutorial, that's legit and all... I guess :I You should get a mod that gives you all the cool things available in the game, in a crate, right outside the vault exit. That would be sooo kewl. And each time you took an item out of the chest, you'd get 10 000 XP, and not one - but TEN perks!!!
Partytime!!!

FO NV and its boring "you gotta do this and this, and preferably in some coherent order"-ness, booo-ooo-oooriii-iii-iiing!

Do you guys remember Rosh's signature? About the father of TES leaving and how he left it to the two creepy uncles who were hooking it out on xbox avenue?

100% correct.

Oh yeah, fuck off with these threads already. We've heard them a million times.

Also, Fallout 1-2 isn't playable? Fuck you dude. Seriously. Fuck you.

The Legion has superior numbers, simpler logistics, better discipline, and more effective leadership (Hanlon is actively sabotaging the NCR, Moore's a psycho, and Oliver's an idiot).

--Fucking invisible walls everywhere.

The only one I consistently run into is in the central mountain range (the one through which Primm Pass passes). Avoiding this is not a problem. Otherwise, I have no idea what you're talking about. Keep in mind that I've played through this game 13 times so maybe I just haven't seen them yet.

Does House have anybody else handy who has an invite to go meet Caesar at his camp (which happens to be where the Securitron Vault is)? After he upgrades the Strip Securitrons and the Lucky 38, the platinum chip isn't much use except for upgrading the rest of his army, and since he correctly predicts you'll be invited to meet with Caesar that's going to work out with a much higher probability than sneaking someone across the river or launching an assault. As you keep doing what he wants, he trusts you more.

Totally false. You can get to the strip at level 1 in the vanilla game. You just have to know what you're doing (the safe path is past Sloan and up through the rockfall trap in Black Mountain, you can scavenge the combat armor from the dead Van Graffs, win at blackjack at the Wrangler, and buy a pass to the strip). That there are places that are too tough for low level players to go is perfectly fine, and something I have no idea why people don't expect in these games (do we want the Deathclaw Cavern in Fo3 to be safe for low level players too?). The intended path is to teach you about the setting and its politics (since they actually bothered to include that stuff in this one), but you don't have to follow it.

The last complaint is ironic since Fallout 3 is literally the most linear WRPG I have ever played.

It is seriously funny how a game is railroaded as fuck because a path is harder than the other, while the alternative is somehow not, when it *literally* makes the player unable to choose a different path. I'm sorry, but if you want to put Fallout 3 in a better light than NV, you just chose a very poor point to do so.

I actually have made a point of fidning alternate ways to get to the strip from Goodsprings everytime I start a New Game, if the alternate paths are too hard for you, maybe you just need a hot cup of GIT GUD.
