So, anyone struggle through as a non-combat character?

It Wandered In From the Wastes
My first playthrough* was with a gal who lived by her wits. She would shun combat, and always be ready to enter dialogue.

So of course I went with CHR 8, INT 7 and high speech. Backup skills were barter and... explosives ;)

I put precisely 0 points in any gun skills. I was hoping there would always be an option to plead for my life, or at the very least run away.

My first indication that something was wrong was the raiders near the school ruins. Playing against my strengths, I decided to have a pot shot at them anyhow. I was mildly surprised by the result. After looting the bodies of three dead raiders, I couldn't help but think they must be the worst raiders ever, if three of them couldn't out-gun a diplomat who'd never used a gun in her life.

Shortly after, on a loading screen, I read that you can surrender to a hostile NPC by putting your weapon away. Throughout the rest of the game, I attempted to surrender to every hostile NPC I came across.

None of them would stop shooting at me. None of them would open dialogue, ever. Not even the NPCs with unique names. They all seemed to operate on a "shoot first" basis.

So, I just wanted to ask, was I doing it wrong, or was there really no way to play through as a pacifist? Can you only enter dialogue with friendly factions?

*And my last, probably.

This would be interesting...i never read any of the loading screens(option to surrender) i will see if i can find it surrendering to raiders = rape = torture = rape = death not good option...

And foreget about Barter...better invest in Sneak...

I never even tried to go non-com. Fallout 3 never presented itself in any way that made it interesting to try and not kill or fight anyone. I killed everyone and everything I could from the moment I was handed a gun.

My second playthru I did actually try not to kill the good people, but I still killed every raider I could find, so... Also, since a lot of enemies will just attack you without any provocation, it makes it pretty difficult to make it through without. You can try upping sneak significantly, but sometimes you just can't slip by some enemies.

Thats why i suggested Sneak i think thats only way...

Any way i belive this dude i will see if on any loading screen is something about surrendering to enemies...its quite possible most people dont have idea how to holster weapon or use pipboy as flashlight so...

I saw that loading screen too. Buncha hooey, as far as I can tell.

This sucks...it would be funny i remember in Fallout 1 i always surrenderd to mutants conversation was great as well with master...and if you consider ending after saving vault joining mutants is not a bad ending :)

That's pretty much the equivalent of encountering a random super mutant patrol in Fallout 1 and expecting them to talk to you.

The school isn't even a necessary part of the main quest. From my experiences with the game the key to avoiding combat when completing quests is to get your lockpicking skill all the way up to 100. There are many doors with the "very hard" difficulty label which would allow you to bypass a plethora of enemies.

Also you can not surrender to an already hostile enemy. The only time you can surrender is if you accidentally shoot someone (once, and they don't die). If you put away your weapon then everyone will become friendly again after a moment.

I'm not really sure how you could get by certain parts of the main quest without fighting (like a few places near the end), but there are often alternatives to fighting. Lockpicking would be a better choice than barter to tag and improve tho. Barter, as many others have pointed out, is not even necessary in this game.

I'd also suggest the sneaking and melee (or unarmed) skills if you can spare the points.

And yes the game is very forgiving if you decide to not put any points into your combat skills. I even started with 1 point in agility and my character is fine (I've since built it up to 6 points, but still...).

There are different Character playthroughs on the beth page. http://fallout.bethsoft.com/eng/vault/diaries_diary7-10.27.08.html

But I didn't want to be sneaky and hide, and run away all the time. I wanted to use persuasion, charm and wit to talk rings around people and gain their confidence.

I thought that by including a speech skill, that would have been possible.

Unfortunately it seems that high speech does not open up the possibility of being friends with the NPCs that Beth has decided are hostile.

So how exactly do the raiders replenish their ranks? Since they shoot everyone they see on sight?

I would love that too but it wasent possible in older Fallouts or any other game for that matter...any way common how would you persuade a hungry super mutant from not eating you...

About raiders well i quess they mate like rabits... :)

Yeah OK I'm not expecting everyone to be non-hostile. There's room for some pyschos and maniacs running around on killing sprees.

But you remember that there were non-hostile raider camps in F1 (or was it 2?) Most of the major factions outside of random encounters were initially non-hostile.

And then you had places like Navarro (an enemy encampment) where you could complete your mission without ever firing a single shot. You just had to pretend you were a new recruit.

In contrast, it seems that pretty much everywhere I go in F3 everyone is out to kill me all the time for no apparent reason.

I run character with tagged small guns, sneak and speach but still ended up with few hundred kills anyway... speach gives you a better quests rewards, allows you to bypas a few fed ex sub quests but will not save your ass from psychic radscorpions or raiders, sneak gives you nice automatic critical shot and allows to roleplay as hitman not berserker a few times but in the end your best friend is your assoult rifle: powerfull with right perks, having lots of spare parts and ammo both cheap and easy to find. I don't even use power armor which clanky (-2 agility) and not giving a better protection than my ranger combat armour.
you can forget about barter you can steal all money you need with sneak and lockpick anyway.

Making characters in FO3 is a lot like buying the old Model T's from Ford.

You could have them in any colour as long as it was black.

Same in FO3. You are free to make any character you like, as long as it's combat oriented.

Did you guys try Not to kill mutants in that place, where the purifier is, [spoiler:754961fbbb]and your father is asking you to "clean" the bulding, so they can come in safely?[/spoiler:754961fbbb]

There is pretty much no way to get through FO3 with little combat and a fulfilling experience, because even Sneak doesn't always work properly, so you'll end up running away alot, I guess...

But no, nothing like sweet-talking yourself into the Enclave base or persuading the Master to give up... Nothing that I know of at least.

Only way to have that would be to make Raiders into actual factions, gangs if you will, that could be bargained with and even at times joined. Such a system however is years beyond contemporary technology.

Ehm, what? It's pretty easy to make such a system, and in fact GTA 2 already did something similar. This isn't a technological limitation, it's just something they didn't add.

Im playing as a pacifist girl char with high charisma and speech. and Im mostly running away full on med-x and stims ;/ Il write a little report

I am on my second time through and I attempted an extremely passive peace-seeking character with Sneak, Speach, Lockpick combo and was thwarted horribly by a few things. I won't detail all of them (like my infinite attempts at a non-violent solution to Tenpenny Tower), but one really ticks me off: Paradise Falls is IMPOSSIBLE to sneak out of with Rory. I wouldn't mind this except that the dialogue options imply a non-violent way to save him (e.g. "Stay low and follow me.") As far as I can tell it is impossible to A: Sneak out or B: Kill 1 slaver without the others noticing. This is characteristic of a few other parts of the game that really have one solution despite the plethora of speach, intelligence and charisma modifiers. Maybe I have no skill but that's what I've found.

Also though: In different play through, I bumped into a scavenger and he turned hostile for some reason. After he shot me twice I put away my gun and he walked away. Havn't been able to repeat it though.

I'd love to know why I keep seeing this statement.

Is it simply faith in Bethesda or (insert favourite dev here). That the things we don't see simply aren't possible?

What technology are we supposedly lacking?

Try being non combat with a talon bounty on your head. those guys don't know the meaning of run away like the raiders. its either your dead or they are.
