So, what exactly could the cloud be?

So Old I'm Losing Radiation Signs
I'm curious about this. Little is known about its origins ( http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/The_Cloud ) and I somehow really like this "mysterious" aura of it. It was already there in prewar times and caused destruction, yet it still persists and cloaks the sierra madre skyscraper... What do you think it could be? Just some gas? Or something different? Let's speculate a bit. :)

Well every scientific marvel in the Fallout universe is deconstructed and given terrible concecuences for using them, like the first models of Power armor etc. My theory was that The CLoud was the byproduct of the Sierra Madre vending machines, I mean they are gadgets that are capable of transforming the sierra madre chips into other things like bullets and junk food, how can this be done? some form of super Fission? are they safe at all? if the workers ahd to use thos Hazmat SUits and they were brought from the Big Empty for the porpouse of being used in the construction is obvious the guys at the Big Empty knew that the machine had enormous side effects in their surroundings, why else give the construction crew almost undestructible hazmat suits? Also I think the Ghost People are some kind of Ghoul variant, I mean Dean says he can survive inside the CLoud easier than humans, maybe it has somethign to do with the ghoulification?

Wasn't this exactly the explanation of the cloud in the game? Or at least hints towards this? Because I thought as well that the cloud and the vending machines are somehow connected.

It was said that during the creation of the vending system, the workers encountered the cloud the first time, that's why they got these hazmat suits to work in safer conditions.. Atleast that's how I recall it.

I'm somehow tempted to replay Dead Money again. :D

The cloud is a gameplay feature designed like a kill-barrier and the by-product is a filter that makes everything look the same that makes the browns and greys of the Fallout series look more refreshing then that blood-red haze. I honestly have no clue what a resort is doing with a bioweapon and if it doesn't get resolved in a future DLC people shall be pissed.

Okay get the advil and the booze, it's gonna be a long couple of hours.

No, it's just fucking annoying to let normal discussions being trolled by such lame posts. It's not even funny. It's not my fault that the DLC didn't meet your high standards of fat loot and being a hero, but please refrain from posting if you don't have anything substantial to say, Blatherscythe.

Oh look another pretentious Fallout 1/2 fanboy. I have played all the games except BOS and except for Tatics I love them all. So take your assumptions and shove them up your ass.

I just think the whole thing was a chore to get through. I didn't give two shits about loot, I already had decent weapons and armor and bought the DLC looking for a cool new adventure. What I got was a head ache from the instant death-traps, whiney companianions and red filter on my screen. The cloud was never explained and is just a way to let people who actually put points in survival and played on hardcore mode torture themselves. If I come off as a troll then my apologies.

I've actually reviewed the DLCs and Mothership Zeta and Operation Anchorage we're my least favorite, because I saw them as loot grabs with little story. Don't assume, because it makes an ASS out of YOU and ME.

The origins of the Cloud are hinted at in logs that you find thru the game. And if you enter there jsut getting pissed about added chalnege I don't knwo what you wanted for your 9 dollars. also learn to use the edit button.

I don't know. It does not tell anything about the quality of the DLC. I never played it after all. But just in general. I never liked the idea about "mystery cloud" or "deadly cloud". I mean ... I don't know. It just sounds TOO ridiculous in my eyes for a serious part of the game world. I mean. Some kick ass technology. Nuclear bombs. Reactors. Even G.E.C.Ks are stuff I could "accept". But a cloud which stays on the same place for more then 200 years ? Deadly. With all kind of mutations and what ever stuff. Does not feel all that great to me. But that is just opinion.

Edit buttons are too old school.
Feel the same way, the cloud did feel a bit silly and Sierre Madre actually looks a lot more interesting when you remove it but then you loose that Silent Hill esque fog thing they were building on.
Quite why it doesn't move or disapate could use some 'splainin.
Though probably nanomachines or whatever the cloud is made of keep it there.

I'll use the edit button when you learn to spell properly. And again you assume I died in the cloud, I never did, it was just another annoyence in a whole DLC of annoyence.

At least in Silent Hill it was an excuse to hide the weak power of their game engine and actually added to that creepy feeling the game had.

Well the ELijah ending states that that he was able to make it spread through the wasteland so maybe there were some emergency measures to keep it from spreading so it stays in the pacle, and you find CLoud residue suggesting that is oves from place to place inside the Sierra Madre, and the structure of the villa has been badly damaged by the Cloud, the place is falling apart as CLoud drips inside.

You would think that the wind would eventually take it away, or it would settle like dust or rain does.

I liked the cloud, in Hardcore mode it made Dead Money seem a lot more challenging and forced me to scavenge for whatever health supplies and food I could find. Dead Money was one of the few things about New Vegas that was actually challenging and I hope that the other DLCs follow it's example.

Edit: It wasn't just a walk through the park, loot-grabbing experience like the Fallout 3 DLC.

Judging from what's known about Sinclair, I'd saw he installed those vending machines because they had the dual effects of making useful supplies and cause deadly pollution that prevents anyone from entering the villa in order to protect Vera Keyes.

Dunno. I would think that our earth is not like Jupiter where storms/dust clouds can hang around for a few million years at the same place.

It is just my opinion. But this cloud thing just sounds totally silly in my eyes. Standing there. In the midle of nowhere. For 200 years. Throwing mutants out from time to time. What next ? Pirates which will come out of the cloud in a future DLC claiming to kill the player because he got cursed when he decided to take a bit of the gold with him after he finished the first DLC ?
