Some Impressions and High Resolution Tweak in PC

sentorio

First time out of the vault
I've played it only about 2 hours now, some observations of mine.

Before starting, F3 complained that it's not possible to run 1680x1050 and tried to force me to run 1280*1024 (I've no clue why!).

Just go to My Documents\My Games\FALLOUT.INI and change the resolution. After that don't use Launcher, run fallout.exe directly.

- Graphics are actually better than what I expected. (GTS 8800). But
animations and specially face etc. textures are totally crap.

- Interfaces are great, whole born, learn choose your skills thingy is really good. Other on-screen stuff is quite nice as well.

- Dialogs seems quite bad so far, and not smart either as in changing dialogs.

- Voice acting is OK

- Normally I play several FPS games, and based on them FPS part of the game totally sucks. Without VATS it's feels wrong. For me for an early level player VATS is critical to survive.

- Killing animations quite a bit stupid. There are too much violence even with small arms which makes it no fun at all. It should be rare so you can "hell look at that shot"...

- Options are quite detailed, (there was discussion on the forum about blood settings, there are several settings in details to configure lightining and even the colours of stuff.)

- Music and Radio addition is good,

- I really like the Pipboy design,

- 3rd person camera is a joke, looks terrible, feels terrible,

- There are too many things to grab and collect in the world, quite like the old way.

It's kind of cool to see 3D ghoul but graphics could have been so much better. My PS3 collector's edition will arrive soon and I'll try to write differences between them.

Ahhh remember the satisfaction of getting a critical on someone in Fallout and having their ribs be blown out...and how annoying it got when it happened every single time you shot someone once you got serious firepower? Seems like its an even bigger fault here.

Eh? The interface is pretty bad. Specifically, the Pip-boy is horrible from an interface point of view. Having to click through three screens before getting to what you need, and then still having to scroll everything because there isn't enough room on the screen gets annoying real fast.

Also, I hate the dialogue interface.

Yep, voice-acting seems better than I had heard so far, although it's still pretty bland.

There's also a world of difference between using VATS and not using it. VATS seems so powerful it almost feels like a cheat.

Meh, pretty repetitive quickly, and the DJ-style used by GNR seems more 90s than 50s, doesn't really fit.

Too bad there's a lot of useless stuff, too. Which is simply annoying.

What's also annoying, is the fact that when you even look at an item that's not yours people start shouting about you not being allowed to steal.

Running it on the highest setting is still disappointing.

Greetings you yous, you. :obsessed:

Say - could you offer a link to the forum thread with the ini tweaks? I'm not a member at the Bethesda forums so it refuses to let me search.

Thanks kindly, watch out sander a POISONOUS snake :revolution:

I also planned to buy it for ps3 but ive heard from few sources(Gamestop ps3 review for example) That it doesnt really perform that good on ps3, which seems pretty weird for me as there is allready better looking stuff for it... Well im intrested how it looks and works on ps3 so post those differences away, please.

I hope its not that bad compared as it really doesnt look anything special in those pc screenshots either....

Please please tell me you're joking... Friggen hated this aspect in Oblivion.

And while on the subject, if you pilfer something and sell it (to someone else...) is it possible? Or do they magically know it's stolen and tell you they won't buy it, so you have to find where the thieves guild is and join said guild to fence the lewt?

As far as I can remember, this was not in Oblivion.

The positive about this is, that it makes it more interesting. The negative is, that they are shouting at you everytime.

I haven't had anyone refuse my wares yet, so it seems you can just sell it everywhere.

I played it for a few hours last night, and came away impressed with it. It's much better than I thought it would be.

It's not Fallout 3 as the Black Isle team would have made it, but for Bethesda, this certainly isn't as bad as I was expecting.

Are there problems with it, and things in it that are just stupid? Yeah, but the deck is stacked in favor of the things they did get right, IMO.

As a long time fan of Deus Ex, it sort of reminds me of that type of game, which isn't necessarily bad at all.

Overall, they did a much better job than I was expecting. This game certainly respects the franchise better than FOBOS did. It's not even fair to compare the two.

As far as graphics go, its a mixed bag. The environments would look so much better if things casted shadows. All of the NPC's cast shadows and they look fine, but the environment itself should have some shadows.
