Speculation Op-Ed: New Vegas and Tycho

wasnt there even some idea floating around during F1 development to give the player a option to continue the game after he got changed by the master in to a super mutant? But it got canceled or something. I swear I have read that somewhere.

Not to my knowledge, but I am not really privy to the inside of Tim Cain's head (apart from the bits that explode outward in the credits, of course).

Second, NCR might be the baddies or at least the initial "bad guy" threat in the plot.
I was just thinking about this. The guy in the trailer is most likely part of NCR, and NCR wants everyone to join them. Soo... it is very possible that NCR are the "bad guys" and are forcing settlements to join them. Wasteland takeover. Although, I'm not sure why they would force them into joining, as it would create higher chances of revolts and revolution. Perhaps NCR is falling apart, and there is, in fact, a revolution going down, or about to go down. Just speculating.

And of course, like in the Fallout 3 teaser trailer there was a BOS soldier, so perhaps NCR are the "good guys" in this game, in the same style as BOS was in Fallout 3. Perhaps the developers didn't want BOS to be a big part of New Vegas, or maybe they won't show up at all. But if they want to get away from BOS, just replacing BOS with NCR, with NCR having basically the same role as FO3 BOS, would be kind of pointless.

I'm leaning more toward NCR being seen as oppressors. If that is an NCR soldier, usually it is the cliche that people who are dressed in dark colors and have glowing red eyes are "bad." But hey, maybe I'm not giving the writers much credit. We'll just have to wait and see.

yeah, I thought about this too. I can definitely see a major plot point being NCR wanting to take NV. neither side is necessarily "bad" or "good", but simply have different interests.

Well you never know, the protagonist could be walking into a situation where an NCR attack had just been fended off (hence the bodies and looped robots), it could be New Vegas could want to take over New Reno and vice versa but could potentially have to cooperate to maintain independence. just a new dynamic if New Reno is actually involved. the plot could go a few different ways for the pc. to make it even more complicated the BoS could get involved (that's now 4 factions) and the entire area could be a war zone for all we know and again potentially up for grabs. It could even be that they won't actually attack the city to preserve its tech, ala vault city. Throw in some Raiders/slavers seeing a potential power grab and that makes 5, not to mention all the sub-factions within factions making it even more fun. now, if you asked me if they'd write such a thing considering the complexity, and the answer is probably not. This is a speculation thread though. All that being said, I think the overall plot will involve assimilating New Vegas into the NCR, the exact opposite, or we help them both. Those will be our 'Fallouty' grey-decision area choices. I'm probably reading way into this but that's what I'm expecting. I'm thinking the 'Tycho'ish' character in the trailer is a wanderer who just happened into the whole thing since advance scouts don't usually plant battle-worn flags in the ground and might try to remain more discreet. I'm not saying it's completely beyond the realm of possibility that the protagonist is allied with the NCR, I'm just hoping that they wouldn't make it that obvious.

Well, I guess I was right on quite a few counts. I really hoped the complexity would be there but alas, not so much.

OK, I know it's so unfallouty, but have the dev's considered something where we can import past characters (at least in theme)?

I'm not sure I take a gas mask, and trench coat, as proof that this is Tycho. For one that would make him pretty damn old, and two, that seems like pretty standard wasteland garb to me.
Not really. Tycho was the only person in Fallout that was described clothed like this.
What you see on characters in Fallout is a standard wasteland garb.

He can be one of the NCR Rangers or Wasteland Rangers, though.

Folks might crap their pants at this thinking, but it would be a real mind-fuck if someone from Fallout 1 was still alive. Tycho would be excellent for that. Of course, I would personally put the Vault Dweller in there.

Like Enoch Root from Stephenson's Cryptonomicon/Baroque Cycle.

It's certainly not Tycho, but i'm curious if the way that soldier fits his description was intentional or just a big coincidence.

The soldier appears on the cover of the US edition of PC Gamer with a much more western inspired look:

In my opinion it kind of screams ranger, but that might just be me.
