Strange sound from computer when playing Fallout Tactics

Judici

First time out of the vault
Hello,

I have a problem with Fallout tactics, as soon as I start the game my computer start to sound strange. It’s hard to explain how it sounds, the best way I could describe it is to say that it’s constant and sound like the computer scratch the dvd inside, but that’s not the case because it sounds the same when I don’t have the dvd inside (on the “insert disk” message).

The game itself works fine, or at least I think so because I’ve only been on the main screen because the sound form the computer sounds VERY unhealthy to it. One note is that the sound change when I change resolution, but all version of the sound sounds still unhealthy for the computer.

I don’t have the original game, but a “Fallout collection” from GSP. The other games (Fallout and Fallout 2) works just fine, without this problem.

I also have another question. Every time I start the game it says that I have to register it to be able to play on the Internet, even if I already done that. But it was on the GSP site I registered on, because it’s the site I get too when I press “register”. Only because I bought the GSP version of the game, dose that mean that I can’t register my game and can’t play multiplayer over the Internet (if that’s still possible)?

Thanks for reading. I know that it’s not nice to cry for help on the first post you write on a forum, but I would really like to try Fallout tactics out because I loved the two first games (even if this isn’t a RPG).

Best regards, Judici

Have you tried setting the shortcut to bos.exe instead of boslauncher? That should get rid of the registration message.

The registration message still appears when I start the game from the BOS.exe

However, the registration message isn’t the big problem, but of course I want to solve that too.

One other strange thing I recently discovered is that the computer change from using 5.1 speakers to only 2 (instead of use all my 5 speaker + bass the computer only use 2 speakers without bass) when I start fallout tactics.

Just to make things clear; the strange sound from the computer comes right from the computer and not from the speakers.

The old interplay registration should give you an option to skip it after the third time you start the game.

FOT does play havoc with speaker set ups, but unhealthy sounds? It does make a clunky sound on the gui whenever you click a button but if you think it's not that then get your pc checked out.

Is there anyway to fix the problem with the speaker settings? Will a different sound option help?

The sound from the computer it’s a constant sound, the sound doesn’t change anything when you click.
My computer always sound different when I start other games from when I don’t do anything on the computer, but I guess that’s just the fans speeding up. But the FOT sound is much stronger, it sounds nearly as when you put a bit of paper in a fan. But again, it’s only in FOT the computer sound this strange on.

I haven't heard of one, the game probably just doesn't support other speaker setups.

Get your pc checked, FOT has a known memory leak problem but I doubt that would make anything go thunk.

Strange, Fallout 2 didn’t change any speaker settings at all. Would an older game support my speaker settings while the newer game don’t?

And you said two times that I should get my PC checked, but what do you mean by that? I’m sorry that I don’t understand, but you have to be more specific.

Check it out as in look inside, or if you aren't comfortable with that get someone else to look at it.

Fallout 1&2 don't need to have the dvd in to play, if you've done the largest install, so check the dvd for cracks and try other dvds.

Other dvds works just fine and the dvd with the Fallout games too, it’s just when I start Fallout tactics I hear the sound.

And I have “checked” my computer recently, but I found nothing out of ordinary.

It seams I’m not alone to hear this strange sound. Maybe everyone got it but just some think it’s something annoying or something to worry about? Well, I’m kind of paranoid when it’s about computers I have to admit…

Same problem.

Judici is definitely not the only one to experience this problem.

I dont see it as coming from the PC, its definitely something coming from the speakers.

Its basically a strong constant schreeching/distortion sound, basically the same you would get as a background effect if you turned your volume to max on same games, mp3s and sound applications, except in this case its extremely annoying, to the point of having me not getting into the game even once, this because even with a very low volume setting its just something thats not possible to ignore, or tolerate for that matter.

When I first purchased FT I didnt have this problem but I had a different older system, so Im guessing as someone already suggested that is some sort of compatibility problem with newer systems or sound controllers, or even my speakers, they are a standard 2 speaker + subwoofer creative labs 2.1 set, dont know what gen. Also I am using SoundMax as my audio controller.

This is strictly an FT problem, there hasnt been a single game that I had this issue with, and I play both recent and fairly old titles.

So if anyone knows of a patch and/or tweak that I can do based on this information for me to actually get to play the damn game, please reply to this.

The Miles 3d audio in FOT was problematic for a lot of folks. I think the Files section has an unofficial patch for it. I believe that there is also a method to "deactivate" it by removing a couple of files (or would that be "dehacktivate").

I'm too lazy* to try it now, but you might search the two FOT forums for "Miles".

* Not lazy in the Silencer-by-way-of-Req's-sig way, but in one of the other myriad ways.

The removing two files from the Miles folder wasn't to deactivate Miles but to solve the black screen on start up problem.

Has anyone tried the no 3d sound option?

HD? About computers, that’s the abbreviation of?

Could Fenrils and mine problem be the same?

Turning off 3d sound dose not affect the sound in any way, no different sound option do. Though changing the video settings change the sound from the computer, but it’s still as annoying no matter what option I take.

HD hard drive.

Fenril's problem is coming from the speakers, you said yours wasn't. Try it with headphones plugged in or the speakers unattached to confirm where it's coming from.

It's odd in 6 years I don't remember anyone else having strange sounds. Speaker setting mixed up yes, but not strange noises.

When I listen more carefully, it sound like the sound comes exactly from the disk driver.

The reason why no one hade this problem some years ago is probably because of all the new hardware and software.

I’m going to have to think about all this for a while now; if I find more information that may be useful I post it here. If I let the thread die I gave up the case.

Thanks for the help so far.

But then more people who still play the game and have new pcs should be reporting this problem.

Actually i have a similar problem exept my sound sounds like a high pitched beeeeeeeeeeeeeeb, Goes away as soon as i start the game (ie sound only in main menu) and it reappears when i level a toon and get to chose a perk. Besides those 2 times i never hear the sound. And no its not coming from my speakers since i turned em off and still heard the sound.
