The Book of Eli in cinemas now

Because the movie is being marketed to a Western,...

Gotcha

... Christian faith based demographic... who right now aren't exactly keen on Qur'an reading peoples of the world. If Danzel was carrying around a Qur'an, i'm pretty sure that would be box office suicide.

There IS however a Qur'an in the movie. :D
Let me guess. Its the book the vilain is dragging around ? (for the case he has one).

Well I would be dissapointed if the movie turned out to be a fantasy one instead of sci-fi one (see battlestar galactica for that :( )
BSG is fantastic.

Yeah, GOD DID IT!

God uses killer robots and sex robots to correct man's desire to gain knowledge and create technology and bring them back to His/Her/It's plan.

Ought to watch this for the setting, not so much the story.

Flick would have been better of if the book turned out to be schedules for a nuclear reactor.

Would have been epic if Eli was delusional and had been protecting a comic or a phonebook.

Or if he was like Ezekiel Rage and his Book of Rage.

I remember seeing that as a child and expecting there to be something awesome in his book.

All he had was a picture of his family in there.

Guy shatters the Earth's crust with a nuclear bomb and he can't even be assed to come up with a wacky Bible of his own.

SCREW HIM!

Oh my! Watched this late last night. Any post apoc genre fan should see it. It does not prescribe to the usual Hollywood bull shit. I'd put it right up there with A Boy and His Dog.

It occurs to me having read a lot of people's posts that this story has borrowed pretty heavily from the storyline of the post-apocolyptic novels by (the now deceased) author David Gemmel, which begins wih the novel 'Wolf in Shadow'.

Has anyone else read those? They deal with an apocolypse caused by the earths magnetic poles swapping rather than nuclear war but the protagonist is an embittered traveller forced into the capacity of brigand-slayer by the harshness of the new world (his family are slaughtered) and seperated from the brigands he slays only by his sense of right wrong and his search for the mythical city of Jerusalem....which he either hasn't worked out -or is in self-denial about - is now at the bottom of the ocean.

Absolutely awesome books where religion is used as a plot device but in no way, shape or form is forced down your throat - or even endorsed for that matter, lol.

Wow, lots of "omg bible it must suck!" posts here.

Now mind you, I'm a cynical faithless jew, but guys-- ignorance goes both ways. The bible has a lot more going for it than televangelistic "do this or god will hate you!" rants. It wouldn't have gone down in tradition for 3000 years, otherwise.
I wouldn't dream of arguing otherwise. That militant theocracy which backed it up did wonders to turn it into part of thw Western Canon. :P

I haven't seen the movie, probably won't see it, so I'm not going to judge it; but when it comes to Christian Apocalypse Novels/Movies they always seem to beg the question - who exactly are these people who choose to follow the Anti-Christ? I've got six decimal places of certainty that there is no God, but if the Angels started coming down tomorrow I'd be persuaded to change my position.

Except... hmm. A novel about one of the Anti-Christ's soldiers who joined up and rebelled against God out of a deep sense of justice might not be too bad of a story.

2012 just around the corner I think there will be a greater number of post apoch and end of the world types of movies. Granted my brother believes that this is part of a government conspiracy trying to get people used to the end that is soon to come...LOL

I remember reading the summary of a comedy novel about an angel and a devil who wanted to prevent the Apocalypse as they rather like the world despite humanity's mistakes.

Can't remember the name sadly.

I thought the same.

Then I hit 20.

And I think he's absolutely the best villain in the RAJQ series, hands down.

A lot of programmes seem like happy-go-lucky versions of what to do in case of a cataclysm:
- Big Brother/Expedition Robinson: how to survive with a group of strangers in/on a limited amount of space with limited resources
- Gastronomical programmes
- Survival programmes like Expedition Robinson or Man vs. Wild
- Lots of agricultural programmes: how do you plant this, how do you sow that...

I doubt politicians are behind this. It's just a global trend. We're long due for a major cataclysmi event so the public opinion, the collective consciousness guides this, it's logical it'll pop up in the media, in politics, in everyday life and so on.

People all throughout history have been ready for the end of times. The reason why there are so many end-of-times-religions is precisely the same why we feel attracted to post-apocalyptic fiction and that kind of stuff. Anthropologically speaking, of course. There is absolutely no difference at all.

On the other hand, just because the world society as whole seems to be getting readier and readier for another global cataclysm doesn't mean it will come any time soon, as history teaches us. Wars for one are not dependent on the depression of any one civilization. If anything, they depend on the growth.

I think it's just a matter of taking a step back and thinking clearly. History repeats itself over and over again, until either the sun explodes, fades, or we blow ourselves all to bits. Otherwise, we'll keep seeing history repeating itself for eternity, even in the space age and whatever comes after that. Human nature never changes.

:EDIT:
And by end-of-time-religions I don't mean crazy loonies running around saying stuff, I mean serious mainstream religions like christianism and such.
