Some people hate lists, but I think that is because they're often done pretty half ass. With everyone's help here at NMA, I think we can make a list far superior to some of the others I have seen. I mean, who thinks Final Fantasy VI is the best RPG of all time? Nonsense. We can avoid such issues anyway by not numbering the list. We don't want a specific sub-genre to dominate like the JRPG's did on IGN's list, so some kind of cutoff might be a good idea. Is 100 too much? I think our 100 list would be a sharp contrast to IGN's travesty personally. Kinda like, "We saw your list, it sucked, now here is ours..."

I think we should probably get the format and other specifics down first since everyone seems to have slightly differing ideas on how the list should be. I suppose we could have votes on important matters like this. Should things be arranged by categories, like JRPG, WRPG, Hack and Slash RPG, etc? Maybe have 20 games per sub-genre? Should we number just the top 10 games, maybe to give a little clarity on what the best really is? It can be done many ways, but it's up to you guys.

Also, each game on the list should have very detailed reasons for why they're on the list - No wikipedia copy paste crap basically. I also think it would be funny if our descriptions poked fun at the IGN-tard hive mind. I think we should try to decide on the criteria and format first off, but I will start pooling the already mentioned titles. They will be up for debate, so let's try to give good reasons why they should or should not be on the list.

If we do this I suggest we keep things civil. I also agree with what others said about not numbering the list, since no one will ever agree on that. There seems to be some debate on how the list should be organized, but I think we can work it all out with a little patience. Community projects can be pretty fun, so I don't see why not personally. It requires a group effort so take that into consideration also. I reckon we could get a poll going as things progress.

What do you folks think?

This sounds pretty good. It'll be nice to see what people consider to be good rpgs on this forum. I haven't played that many actual RPGs to be honest, and I'd like to see what others reccomend as the best.

ultima 4
ultima 7
ultima 1 ( not ultima 0 aklabeth )
might magic 3, 4, 5
arcanum
alpha protocol
deus ex 1
deus ex human revolution
fallout
fallout 2
maybe some of the geneforges
kings quest games ( 3, 4, 5 )
who wants to be a hero games ( 1, 2 )
bards tale 1/2
neverwinter nights 1/2

if we are going to include the diablos:
sacred

if we are going to include the RPG Lite crowd:
oblivion
morrowind
fallout 3
fable(s)

Kings Quest is more of an adventure game though right? Not really a RPG...

How about instead a Top 100 RPGs we do 100 great RPGs in no particular order. Ordered lists not generated from hard data suck by definition.

I agree. No order whatsoever.

Probably Fallout (1&2), the original Deus Ex and Wasteland at the very top of the pyramid. Then you have things like Arcanum, Morrowind - you name it.

No JRPGs for me though. I've never really played one and what I saw I deeply disliked.

I think the JRPG's should be treated with fairness, but many are pretty mediocre. Persona 4 is unique enough to warrant a place, Chrono Trigger is pretty good too, but I can't say I like half of the JRPG's on IGN's list. I wouldn't have listed so many Final Fantasy games for damn sure. It's all up for debate though.

Why ultima 4? Isn't it a hackfest?

It was the first rpg to introduce non-combat stuff and because of that it's kinda weak on that chapter.

Chronology?

Glad to see Might and Magic 3. Also, A Link to the Past was no laughing matter. Entertains me to this day.

Not top 100, just my favourites in no order;

-Planescape Torment
-Dragon Age: Origins (haters gonna hate)
-Baldur's Gate series. The second game is better, even if the ruleset makes me pull my hairs off sometimes.
-Fallout, of course. I'd put 1 first and foremost, then 2 and NV on very equal footing.
-Mass Effect series (3 is best despite the shit ending)
-Not sure Deus Ex counts as an RPG but whatever. I like the original and Human Revolution equally.
Morrowind
-Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (back when Square wasn't neck-deep in anime pseudo-''cool'' shit and didn't take them themselves too seriously)
-Knights of the Old Republic, the second wins hands-down with the restored content mod.
-Pokemon Gold/Silver, full on nostalgia mayhaps but still. Also yes Pokemon is most definitely an RPG, or ARPG if you want to be pedantic.
-Neverwinter Nights 2, but mostly the Mask of the Betrayer expansion. OC is trite and cliche, but Mask is tens gallons of awesome. Only retarded thing is the 4 party member limit in a game with 5 party members total, but mods remedy this quickly.

For Diablo-style games, nothing beats Diablo 2

I'm too young to have played any Ultima game. Should remedy that someday.

We need at least one of the Mother games....Earthbound and/or Mother 3....

Mother 3 wasn't released outside Japan I think, but it is definitely one of my top RPG's.

Well, that might work. Depends on what everyone thinks. Sorry for the double post.

I'd put a vote for Inquisitor up. It plays like a 10 year old RPG in the best kind of way, somewhat wonky difficulty included.

I've been considering playing it after you mentioned it over in tO. I may have to now.

Will the list really mix wRPG, jRPG and aRPG? Oh well... I'll just put some Final Fantasy fire on the jRPG gasoline:

7 > 10 & 6 > 9 & 8 > all others, and that's God's honest truth

That's one of the two major problems I see with the list. The other major problem is that you're aiming for 100, which is a fucking lot and means that you will end up with a far less selective list. I say narrow it down to 25 or do a 10 best list for each of the three general classifications.
