Edge Online offers a pretty good list of top video gaming moments, with some picks that will make you smile in reminiscence (though they miss some of my personal favs, including Torment, Bloodlines and Pathologic, but heck, lists always do). Of course Fallout is in there:

Fallout
The Glow
1997

The highly radioactive area known as “The Glow” was an exercise in “show don’t tell” storytelling, which Black Isle Studios executed masterfully. Some fans revere The Glow as the best part of the overall series. (Pic courtesy nma-fallout.com forums.)
The Glow is definitely one of the game-defining moments, and the way the BoS carelessly sends you to it (and thus - they think - to your certain doom) without a second thought really highlights the way Fallout approached humanity. But is it the location or moment of the game? For me, it competes with Junktown for best location and both the ending and the Master dialogue for greatest moment. What do you think?

Wonder why they put that screenshot through such a heavy gamma correction, too. Ah schwell.

Also, "How Hitler Really Died" was such a rockin' moment

True, talking to the Master was great too. Not just the standard "you are evil, I kill you"-stuff.

Metroid
Samus is a woman
1987

“Great!! You fulfilled your mission. It will revive peace in space.” Spacesuit getup flickers away. Samus is… female?! It’s still one of the best twists in gaming.

-------

Monkey Island was a title that actually rewarded you for brushing up on your one-liners, thanks to an ingenious fencing system where witty retorts earned you victory. "How appropriate. You fight like a cow."

Definitely!

Great nostalgic events in that link. Thank you.

EDIT:

Half-Life 2
Going to Ravenholm
2004

You soon learn why “We don’t go to Ravenholm.” In this spooky setting, headcrabs and zombies made for good bullet fodder, but the real treat was getting some quality time with the Gravity Gun.

Another classic!

You never wanted to go into the Brotherhood or use a power armor?

This is actually scary, i started gaming near/about 95 and now that i think about my best moments; most of them seem to be pre 2k... Is it that i was younger but my imagination was bigger... or is it copy/paste town lately?...

Glow and its deadly secrets.../Telling the master that Super Mutants were sterile.../The Followers of Apocalypse spy in cathedral (I dont know why this unimportant bit is stuck in my memory).

Meeting Tandi in FO 2/ The Horrigan encounter at desert /The brain rat in Gecko/ Redding/ Hating the vault city/ The documents in slaver-raider hideout... The drifters...

All of those stories were certainly products of diseased and mutant minds. (And i have become a Dinasaur in my ancient age of 24...)

Wait... the old SimCity had an alien attack?

EDIT: Seems that only the Nintendo version. Also, I found this gem via Wikipedia:
In The Sims: Vacation, there was an arcade game titled SimMars and it had a detailed description about the game:

"Direct mankind's first mission to the red planet! Launch rockets and deploy robot probes! Deploy teams to search for alien resources! Establish and run a network of specialized colonies to create a self-sufficient civilization! Provide your colony with food, shelter, and power! Fast, furious, adrenaline-pumping action!"

I just love the soundtrack in the Glow, without it, the place would lose half of its charm.

My all time favorite moment in gaming is probably watching the opening of Fallout 1, followed by ...

Betraying yoshi to save myself on a long jump in Super Mario World.

Talking the Master out of his plan and into a pile of radioactive dust would probably be the single defining moment for Fallout, since there still aren't a lot of games around where you can simply circumvent a climactic boss fight by dialogue and in-game knowledge. Back when I made it through the game with my first diplomatic character and found out that I could talk the Master out of his plan, it was just mind-blowing - though I recall really wanting an option to appeal to Richard Grey at the time, which in retrospect might have been way more cliche'd and tacky than how they pulled it off.

The Glow isn't a bad choice, though. It certainly contains much of the game's backstory, with all those FEV experiment holodisks lying around.

It is an age thing. You imagination is much less jaded earlier in life.

My favorite game moment...............

beating Japan in PTO IV....defeating chaos with a group of White mages in the first final fantasy....finding the grave of edrick in elftown in FF, finally beating gannon in adventure of link, ............

nah I think it would be killing lord british in ultima exodus and just being shocked that I actually could....

I can still remember the first time I went to The Glow. It was definitely a defining experience in the Fallout games. It was perfect. If you wanted to fight with all of the robots in it you could, and if you knew a little science you could do the whole place without firing a shot. It took full advantage of the different skills in the game, and could be approached in a few ways. The only real threat in the place being the radiation. It forced you to actually prepare for it by taking the Rad-X and using Rad-Away. It also drove home the point, in my mind, that even the most powerful civilizations can one day be nothing but ruins, waiting to be picked apart. Here was a place that is central to the Fallout universe.

The Glow, IMO, is what Fallout is all about.

If Bethesda can manage to pull of something like that I'd be amazed, shocked, and delighted. I'm not going to hold my breath.

Same goes for a lot of places of both of the Fallout's. The soundtrack really did a lot for them. (but I'm an audio/music -freak anyways)

Torment? Favorite moment in Torment: READING.

That dude makes some bad decisions, I hope Ian and Tycho both died from the radiation.

Nah, they just kinda seemed like cunts?
I have a hard time playing characters in any other way than myself really.

The master dialog, albeit crucial to the game and the series, was never that "wow omg wth's this!??!?!?isdghp9idosamnf +iouds" for me... I love the glow, though, just like I love necropolis, mariposa and all the other pre-war locations in the game. Those are the best for me. Archeology, in a way :P
