The truth about cats and dogs

Talisien

Still Mildly Glowing
I was playing FO2 the other day, and I had just arrived in the den. I was in Mom's Diner, talking to the drunk girl about her cat, and I suddenly had an odd thought. It went something like this (oh, and Bali Hi used to be a Vietnamese cuisine restaurant near me, but it got shut down a few years back):

"Hunh, they ate all the cats. Sounds like Bali Hi. Of course, they cooked up the neighborhood dogs, too. Say, why didn't her people eat the dogs, too? A dog would have more meat on it than a cat. Plus, they would be easier to catch. I mean, really, dogs are more obedient than cats. Tend to trust humans more, too. What's up with that?"

So I was wondering, what do you all think? If people in the post war world would eat cats, why wouldn't they eat the dogs? Aside form if there weren't any, I mean.

A dog can be trained to be an obedient follower, a cat is far too much of an independent predator capable of surviving on its own to be useful as anything other than food or pest control. Maybe a few other things, but not much.

This is actually a logic flaw in Fallout canon.

Yes, in a post-apoc setting cats and dogs would both be eaten to some point. Neither would or could be eaten to the point of extinction. If attempts to do so were made, you'd find cats to be the more resilient ones when hunted and any attempt by a crippled mankind to eat *all* cats would fail, miserably. But this can be forgiven as a point of SF.

The next logical flaw is, though, that if any cats survived, no matter how few, they'd integrate fast and perfectly in the post-apocalyptic agricultural society (not in the scavenging post-apoc culture, though) like Shady Sands. Cats are the prime animal to have in any kind of agrictulture, whereas dogs are only useful to livestock holders (and considering brahmin are the only livestock left...) In a town like Shady Sands dogs would mostly be consumers of valuable goods, whereas you don't even need to feed a cat.

Nope, it makes no real sense. I'm guessing someone at BIS just hated cats.

Well one good reason is a dog could kill you if you try'd to brain it with a rock or something.

Dogs are far easier to kill with your bare hands than cats. Cats don't fight often, but believe me that they'd win in a fight with the average current human being.

cats are cats.
dogs are dogs.

you cant eat both!

and killing a cat is way lot more easier than killing a dog, not that i am talking about personall expieriences :look: damn it, both are fast runners, but i am faster, when im hungry ahahaha

a cat is less likely to bite a raider in the buttocks

Not to mention that the existence of a significant number of cats might have rendered the entire "rat killfest" theme of Klamath and other starting areas completely void...

It might have been interesting to see what a post-apocalyptic feline would look like. According to the bible, rad sorpions are the result of both radiation and FEV. What would you think if you walked into the cave near Shady Sands and found a den of house cats the size of lions? Of course, then the game's designers could have made cat nip (aka Kitty Pot), and all sorts of mayhem could ensue. Personally, I would at least THINK about taking a huge feline into my party. But I'd drop it as soon as I got Dogmeat... And then pick it up after he died.

liar! dogmeat cant die!

well, those rats could probably kill a cat judging by their size :P

You must have a better Dogmeat than I do. The military base wasn't a problem, but I could never get him out of the Master's chamber alive. I usually used up all of my stimpacks just to get him IN, LOL.

Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of having party members, if they can't ever be around when dangerous stuff happens?

Dogs are good at waking up people in the middle of the night, cats tend to be more quiet.
Dogs can also be used to carry a raealtively big amount of equipment, and they are more faithfull to their master and companion.
But cats are better pest controller than dogs.
I don't think the huge rats would be a problem for cats, considering that only the toughest cats would survive, as well as some cats are pure-breed killers. I once herd a story of a cat in a room, where a man entered with a rotweiler (or an equally "fierce" dog, not sure wich rase), the dog started snarrling, like dogs do, while the cat rushed over and slit its throat, in a matter of seconds.

In my (il?)logical head, cats would be sneaking aorund in most towns, as well as loose dogs, but dogs would also some places be domesticated and used for varius tasks.
And both cats and dogs would have a place on most menus.

In my life I have personally seen how a feral dog can own a person just for food it might not need, when i was like 10 i brought home a blonde mutt. we had it in the house for about a month or so and one day we were having a BBQ and my aunt was bringing meat to the grill and Sparky (the mutt) decided he wanted to waste on her and he managed to tear her calf almost completly off before my dad and I could get him off (this was in a matter of like 5 seconds) I know there is no domesticated cat that could pull that off, plus I've killed a couple cats myself with a damn red rider

My opinoin dogs are dogs because they work well with primitave scavaging humans and cats dont mesh the same way and therefore its an easier jump to eat them than a dog
