Tough guy + Insane + CTB?

First time out of the vault
Hello everyone a new member here but otherwise a long time Fallout fan! :D

Feeling a bit nostalgic recently so I dusted off my Fallout Tactics CD's. It's been ten years since I played the game and what I do remember is that I did complete it in hard difficulty + tough guy and always in CTB.

After a while I found that combination easy and familiar and being a person who likes a challenge so this time it has to be insane.. and it really is! I just can't figure out how pass the first mission. I mean it turns the odds agains you in everything and it's ridiculously overwhelming.

For example raiders seem to get critital hits on you all the time and guys with Colt 45's and hunting rifles it can mean one hit and that's it and from long distance too. That first guy with Colt 45 once butchered me from across half the screen. Also melee raiders can kill you instantly which doesn't make sense.

So how are you supposed to proceed when you have so small chance to hit your enemy because skills are low? Do I need to learn new kind of tactics in turn based mode perhaps? Do I have to exploit something? By the way I've always played in CTB and have never even tried the other modes.

I've gotten to the part with tribal hostages and once managed to rescue all of them but the next area with hunting rifle raiders always gets me. I can't rely on Farsight all the time and try to pick raiders off one by one because I'm always running out of ammo. I can't rely on enemies running out of ammo either because of the nasty melee damage and chance to hit them is about 40-50% at best when up close.

I'm sure there is a masterman or two here who have completed the whole game playing tough guy + insane so all the help would be greatly appreciated. I can manage the second mission better but the first one drives me crazy.

The first mission is the hardest in the entire game imo. I never played tactics in turn based but doing so would probably be a safe bet. Run out > shoot > hide and repeat. Besides that you could pray to Thor/Allah/God or who ever you belive in :D

Actually, it does make perfect sense. Who goes around surviving several .45 impacts? Get whacked straight across the noggin with a heavy club, and most of us will go down like a sack o potatoes.

Which is precisely why I don't play "tough guy" :D
To me it would only be frustrating, and I prefer having a good time playing games :D To each his own tho

Well I almost got it. Made a significant progress until one shotgun guy near the end surprised me and shot me to death with one nasty critical (how else). CTB always on by the way!

After I found the lockpick and cleared the area next to hostages I leveled Farsight to lvl2 by simply locking and unlocking a door couple of times (who says I cannot hone a skill during a mission :)). Then with 75 points in small guns it became much more bearable.

Anyway I'm not going to use the lockpicking trick to gain even more levels because then it would be borderline cheating. Have to stay reasonable after all .

Haven't had much time to play lately but just finished Quincy (yes all the way in CTB, not once have I changed the mode) and so far it has literally been insane but also insanely funny when all goes as planned. For example successfully saving all the hostages and surviving other tricky parts :).

Oh I can hardly wait for super mutant missions!

Technically the game has worked great so far. I even did a clean XP install before I started playing (just in case hehe). It hasn't crashed once (which I used to fear since missions easily take a couple of hours and not being able to save) nor have I encountered any bigger glitches. Hopefully it stays that way.
