Toxic Caves (the elevator)

You not only need better skill, but the right lockpicks as well.

You'll need to revisit the location later in the game.

It's even more pointless to want to go down there unless you can fight what's down there.

That elevater is supposably the only elevater in the game that an electronic lockpick will work on. Once you get it open, there is a robot that will ussually kick your ass untill later levels...however I found a neat trick!

While you are going down the elevater hold down the "a" button. When you get down to the basement you will automaticly start in combat mode. Then RUN into the next room where the robot can't see you and then hit "end combat". Then you should be able to loot to your hearts content without dealing with the battle bot thingy. Oh, and you leave the same method...and don't bring any NPCs down!

You can get the lockpick in San Fransico, but by the time you get there you wont need whats in the caves...

Heh, there was a way of getting the lock pick earlier. Not sure...I think it was in New Reno. Anyway, I used to have the habit doing the game i a normal pace, then picking up the lockpick there, going into the Toxic Caves complex and coming back to wipe out all the families with MAH GUNS!

:o Gddmnt! Apparently we do have something in common: I tend to do the exact same thing. Normal pace -> New Reno to get lockpick -> Toxic Caves to get good weapons -> exterminate most families in New Reno -> smile. Hehe.

You can indeed find an Electronic Lockpick in New Reno, in Eldridge's basement (you know, where Algernon can be found). It's not a MKII (as the one in Navarro), but it works just as well on the elevator in the Toxic Caves.

Oh well...

To add to the confusion, Electronic Lockpick MKII never opened the elevator door in the toxic caves in Fallout 2 v1.00, only the Electronic Lockpick mark one could do this. Thia was fixed in the patch.

Just in case you were playing unpatched, Citizen.

In Klamath u get a miniQuest to find a Trapper named: Smiley. So I journey to the Toxic Caves and kill some golden geckos and eventually find Smiley in a room in the ither end of the caves.

But.
In the same room there is a broken elevator. And there's a powergenerator. It's been a while since the last time I played Fallout 2. But I think I managed to repair the the generator, but the elevatordoor seemed to be protected by some electric shock defence system. And you need the correct key to open the door. I've tried many ways to lockpick, and even blow the door open with dynamite:p But all my attempts have failed.

I got a feeling something's down there:P
Perhaps some of the more experienced players may have some hints, or perhaps could try it out for themselves...

First of all, you need an electronic lockpick. Second, the experienced players (and me, and I'm not exactly experienced) know what's down there, if you want to know, say that you want to know, otherwise, we will withhold this information from you.

You need to repair the generator (Vic can do it if you can't) and then use an electronic lockpick to pick the lock on the elevator door. A normal lockpick won't work.

Down there is a security bot (pretty tough) and some phet lewt (plasma/laser pistol, combat armor, etc.)
