Treading very carefully... does rape have a part in Fallout?

First time out of the vault
Now I am being VERY careful here. Presumably in a world where murder isn't especially uncommon, rape would also rear it's ugly head.

I'm not sure if anyone's seen it, but I'm thinking along the lines of one of Mila Kunis' scenes in Book Of Eli.

I know this is all a tad grim but I just think it's a very realistic aspect that has been left out! When slavery and cannibalism are taking place, why is rape so unbelievable!

Any thoughts?

There is potential rape in Fallout 2, in Modoc. With consequences.

Rape isn't unbelievable compared to cannibalism and slavery, it's just so much harder to do right, from a tastefulness and censorship perspective both. It's got a place in Fallout (hell, as Per pointe out, it was in Fallout), but it's so hard to do well, without making it feel exploitative.

Bethesda definitely won't do it, not with their sanitized Fallout setting, and that's probably a good thing.

It belongs yes but I don't see it being put into the game because it's soo easy to put in the wrong way.

If I'm not wrong, one of the NCR soldiers (female) in Camp McCarran in Fallout New Vegas was raped, and the quest involves discovering who the rapist is. Or something along those lines, I didn't play FNV much...

But yes, there's rape in the series. Maybe not direct or explicit (aside from Fallout 2), but it's mentioned several times throughout the series.

The quest was about her going to a mental doctor or something along the lines. While I don't think the quest is bad, all this running around for it is super annoying. (Camp McCarran, Doc, Camp McCarran, the Doc, and then back again.) Though, hardly the same as a player being able to rape someone (like in Fallout 2).

yeah I think that quest was called I Don't Hurt Anymore. And as for it being in Fallout 2 sorry, my noobness is coming into play as I've only played fo3 and fo-nv.

I obviously don't mean just male to female, by the way. And I understand what people mean about doing it tastefully. At the end of the day you don't want fallout to turn into yet another gratuitous game where preteens can look forward to a glimpse of a tit every now and then.

It just seems a shame that not everyone who plays FO would have the maturity to handle what would be (in a REAL post-apocalyptic, police free world) most likely quite a common occurence :/

Of course it belongs. It's a post-nuclear wasteland. People reduced to their most basic and primitive instincts: eat, sleep and fuck. I'm not sure it can be done in a "tasteful" way, either. There's very little "taste" about all the depressing themes Fallout games swim in, when you think about it. Sure, Fallout always had suspension of disbelief going for it, and a detached, almost comical way to deal with the various horrors you encounter in your adventures. But it doesn't make said horrors any less horrifying. Slavery, cannibalism, using people as guinea pigs (Vaults project, Jet production), robbery, killing, a general feel of "might is right" kind of rule, with the major one being, the more fucked in the head you are, the more you are likely to stay alive the longest.

It's a grim setting by default, chaps. If rape can't be a part of it, it loses some of it's authenticity. You think Metzger didn't take advantage of his stock? Come on.

I never could understand how murder can be treated with casual disregard in our society, but rape tends to be tip-toed around. We can be so hilarious, sometimes.

Yes. One of the Red capped rangers (I forgot their name...something like 1st squad) was raped by Cook-Cook I believe.

Also, where was there rape in FO2? I don't recall that happening.

But yeah, as long as Bethesda is afraid of parent groups and moralists cracking down on them, then rape and child killing aren't going to happen.

Yes, Cook-Cook is a known rapist in New Vegas.
There's also a sort of pedophile dialog option in Fallout 2 when you talk to Johnny in the ghost farm. You can offer him "candies" you have in your pocket. Mostly dark humor, anyway, nothing else happens.

Like many people have stated before, it's the post apoc. When I picture the post apoc, I see murder, rape, slavery, Cannablism, war and drugs flying about.
The one thing I noticed that no post apoc has touched upon are disabilities, Diease, Rich V Poor. How could a man with mental issues cope in a world where people without issues struggle to survive?
So rape has indeed got a place in Fallout. Hell, even child rape is in a normal world, so why not a lawless one?
Not saying I want to rape kids btw

In fact, there are a subtle reference to mind challenged people, there is one guy with the Hubbologists in Fallout 2 who has in his inventory a trophy "for being special", but again, is more like a joke than anything else, since he has no specific role aside from that.
About rich vs. poor, well, there are some sort of rich vs. poor struggles, Vault City and the villages around, for example.
But nothing too obvious about it.

Ever see A Boy and His Dog? Major influence for Fallout in which the main character is a rapist.
Does rape belong in Fallout? Yes, just remember to handle the subject matter well. It is pretty grim stuff no matter who is raping or getting raped. To believe it wouldn't happen often in such a world is very optimistic.

Rape has its place, but it still has to be treated very tastefully. It's a horrific act, and it has consequences.

Cook-Cook had raped Betsy at Camp McCarran, as well as Pretty Sarah in Westside (it's where she got those scars).

Jericho of Fallout 3 is implied to have tried to rape Jenny Stahl, but it has no real impact on anything other than the note on Moriarty's terminal or the conversation Jericho and Jenny have.

Well to be fair in fallout 3 you've got Tenpenny Tower. And in New Vegas you've got the Followers of the Apocalypse kinda looking after sickly people

And in line with you not wanting to rape children ... I also don't want to be raped lol

Well, an NPC (Maybe Siri but I don't remember) talks about life in the legion for women, she says that Legionaries often rape them, but leave them alone if they are too old or too young.... usually.

in a wild wastland where people would kill for anything rape would be part of theculture

theres an old film called yojimbo by akira kurosawa

the bandit either does or doesnt rape the wife depending on who you want to believe

its the only example of tastefuly done rape but gaming companies havent matured to the point of doing something like that

Huh, haven't seen that, i'll have to talk to her to try and see this dialogue

Rape has been mentioned quite a bit in a few of the games. It is a necessary evil for a post apocalyptic wasteland. I think it should always be done tastefully though. I see that someone already mentioned that too. Personally I hate rapists with a passion, so it is always nice to murder rapists like Cook-Cook in New Vegas.
