Trouble With Custom Recruits

Kajimo

First time out of the vault
I've been a big fan of Tactics for many years now. I still pick it of the shelve now and then to give it another go. After a few times, however, I got tired of the usual line-up of recruits and started messing around with the editors - turned out it was a bit more tricky than I thought. I got through the explanations, however, and made my dream-team, just the way I wanted it.

That was some years ago now. I've just re-installed the game and tried the ol' edit again. However, this time it doesn't work. I do everything I did last time, but the changes just won't kick in. Obviously, this has me on the brink of tossing my computer out the window and into the street. I would like to know, if anybody else has had a problem with this recently? I found the same tutorial I used back then, if it's any help. http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/370849-fallout-tactics-brotherhood-of-steel/faqs/48900 I would very much appreciate any help you can give. So far, I haven't found a link to another discussion of this particular nature (everybody else seems to have this part working just fine - I'm not even messing around with portraits or anything, just name, age and stats. Remember, I'm not trying to create entirely new recruits, simply rewrite some of the info for the ones that already exist). I'm sorry if I've re-posted an old issue.

The 1.27 patch already produced unpacked versions of the recruits in core/entities/recruits and most likely these are overwriting your changes. There's no need to repack your changes as the game will read the unpacked versions first.

Aww, man. Can't believe I didn't spot that. Anyway, thanks for the help - worked like a charm. Now I'm gonna go eat my shame-Ice cream.

Is it possible to change their recruitment settings (for example: picking up a modified deathclaw or ghoul after freeport)? Also, I noticed that overwriting the standard recruits in the core/entities/recruits does not affect the characters.txt. Could I simply rewrite the characters.txt to fit my current recruits? Or will that unleash Armageddon? This is all a bit old school to me! =) I remember a mod, from way back, that attempted to allow additional recruits in your merry band - 10, I think. Is that still available somewhere?

If only you'd provide some information about name of this mod... Can't google anything useful right now, nor can i remember anything like that in my past.

I don't remember any such mod, but it can be easily done, just place the extra recruits on a map with their player index set to 1.

Characters.txt is easily edited, just make sure that you don't accidentally delete any brackets.

There's two ways of changing the recruit order, either by editing the triggers in the maps, or by editing the campaign.txt and importing your changes into the bos.cam file. Though you'll also have to edit their rank to be lower otherwise they won't show up. Search the forum or check out the links in the FAQ post, if you need more details.

Alright. Thanks a lot guys - I got the stuff working that needed to. I have no idea what the name of the mod was. I think it was work in progress. I realize the game is build for six characters max, but I always wanted to try it with, say, 12 weaker characters - allows for a bit more specialization.
