First time out of the vault
Hi there!

I've really never played fallout 2 (fallout 1 was one of my favorites).

Might be the bugs... well

Should I go with killap's vanilla unofficial patch or start with "restoration" right away? Seriously, I am kinda having this dilemma for days now. lol

help me

thanx

a hint?

Is it a good idea to start the game with the "restoration mod" when not played the official game?

The patch works great, but leaves a few holes in the story. It fixes the bugs you mentioned, and there were a LOT, but in some places it still seems like the original devs dropped things in mid production, which they did. For example, the first companion you can recruit in the game mentions his sister that was captured by slavers. He will join up with you feeling good about his chances of finding "Sis" with you. The vanilla game drops that story thread right there. Sis never comes up again.

The FO2 Restoration Project completes the game the original designers wanted to make. All of the incomplete files written for the missing parts of the game were still in the original game code. Killap undertook the task of completing all of this material. The RP was effectively completed last year. All incomplete content has been restored. The only remaining task is final bug squashing. There have been hints that a "final" release is coming very soon. (Maybe by Christmas?) We all have our fingers crossed.

I would recommend the RP. It has a few of it's own bugs still remaining, but none are game breaking. They will, hopefully, be fixed soon.

Hm? Never heard of that.

If you never played Fallout 2 before, you should use the patch-only version for a first run. After that, you can use the restoration stuff.

When I was playing Fo2 for a very first time, I missed most of the story details due to game complexity, not bugs.

Somewhere is written that why the patch shouldn't be installed in the "program files" directory under Vista/Win7.....

errrr....why?

I got Win7 32 bit and fallout 2 installed to c:\program files\Blackisle\Fallout 2...

so that's where I install the "restoration patch" right?

I agree with Lexx, enjoy the original bug free, well almost bug free, then give the RP a go. The RP has a lot of changes, the maps have "moar" stuff, some people found it too cluttered... :look:

Either way grab Mash's latest resolution patch and install it, for further happiness.

The first time, yes. On subsequent playthroughs holes in the story become more noticable. The RP fixes that. So, you could easily play with just the patch to start and you might not notice these missing parts. The next time you run the game though, you are likely to notice things.

Could u guys explain me step by step how to install fallout 2 with restoration patch in win 7?

I have read that it shouldn't be be installed in the "program files" folder. So, like an installation to c:\fallout2 for example will work fine?

I already told him what to do, but apparently he ignored me.
Here is my reply in RP thread:

Just download the installer in the first page. Select the directory where Fallout 2 is installed, select the extra things you want (original .223 pistol sound, for example) and the rest is pretty obvious.

Yes, no problem.
Or maybe he followed my instructions and is playing the game already?
An "thank you for your help" would be good to hear. :(

I always went with the official patch, because the term "official" sounds serious.
