V13 MMO

Plissken

It Wandered In From the Wastes
So...Interplay's deadline is April or March of this year. Have they started development or is Bethesda going to end up retaining the rights to the Fallout MMO?

I'm so scared.

"hay dudes can en1 give me a plsma rifle n sum ammo????? i got sum junk a stuf 2 trade PLZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!1!!11"

No matter who develops a Fallout MMORPG, it's still going to suck.

lol. A very accurate prediction of what some will say in-game.

I'd rather have it be two of the original devs rather than Bethesda retain the rights.

I think Fallout MMORPG would be awesome. Anybody who says it will sucks lacks one thing, imagination.

start as a vault dweller, a tribal, as this as that.

Join the brotherhood, join the enclave, hell dip yourself in some FEV and join the super mutants.

Shoot this town up, protect this town, pick pocket everyone in this town.

Wild west justice, pick the fight with the wrong person and rot under the sun until the wolves come to eat your corpse.

Loot, loot loot! dungeons will not be in short supply.

Persistent story line game mechanics!

The enclave overran the brotherhood at XYZ, the brotherhood overran the enclave at XZY, the super mutant scourge has laid waste to the town at YXZ!

Oh man, the game could so easily be the best mmorpg ever made, it just takes people with talent and vision to make. Luckily interplay can find those people, and if it they cant and Fallout online sucks hard.

well then shit, atleast its an online fallout game, I'd still play it for 15 bucks a month.

Fallout, one of the few genres I can actually identify with(yes, even the nuclear powered future).

Fallout mmo will most likely be horrific monstrosity.
With:
Bottlecaps beggers.
Corpse campers.
12 year old kids.
Epix.
1-2 choices of endgame armour.
Chinese bottlecap farms.
4-6 hour raids.
Repetetive gameplay and quests.

So really cant say i am expecting this game much.
Mainly because i have found every MMO to be rather idiotic.
Especially WoW.
And i have imagination.
How else could i draw and write.

Like in Fallout 1 and 2, only controlled by players? Don't see the problem here.

Corpse campers.

Go back with a group or don't go back. Or go back for revenge and get it.

12 year old kids.

Like in fallout 1 and 2, only controlled by players? Someone gets annoying: /mute

Hopefully not, Fallout's gear system doesn't really allow for magic items. I'd imagine the devs at interplay are aware of that.

1-2 choices of endgame armour.

As opposed to the 1 choice in Fallout 1 and 2? Room for improvement over the originals here, not really any room for failure though.

Chinese bottlecap farms.

How does that have an effect on your enjoyment of a game?

4-6 hour raids.

If this was all there was to do I would agree that it's a problem, not everyone has time to be on some stupid "raiding schedule".
If there were other things to do, and the 4-6 hour raids managed to be fun, what would be the problem?

Repetetive gameplay and quests.

The crux of the biscuit in any mmo. We'll see how they do here. It's not impossible to create a game with varied gameplay though.

I'll remain hopeful about this one until I've reason to believe Anderson and Taylor have totally dropped the ball.

So, you are comparing An MMO that is in preproduction for ALLREADY looking to much like wow, and at the same time, not enough like wow.

For instance, corpse campers are only in MMO's which use WOW's mechanic of dying.

Beggars are just as prevalent in the real world, so why does that bother you?

Endgame gear is exactly what it is; ENDgame gear, why is everyone so stoked on decking out their toon ASAP to only burn out on the game and quit, usually accompanied by a whiny post on some forum going "ZAMG TEH GAEM HAS NO CONTENT"

Quests will most likely be somewhat bland, but if i can complete them sporting my Sig sauer 14MM hand cannon while taking out raiders with my friends, I am all up for it.

Also, the mechanic of non-classes seems very interesting to me;
Instead of cookie-cutter classes with preset stats and skills, you can customize a character and make your own class.
Or at least, that's what they say.

As long they don't have a carebear land this game have a lot of potential.

I don't know if anyone here have ever played Ultima Online, one of the first "real" MMORPG's. Before they patched the game to shit it was a reeealy realy good game. Mainly the first 2-3 years.

You could pretty much do whatever you wanted to do, exactly as in Fallout - play good guy / neutral / evil.

The player(s) / guild(s) pretty much policed the world on their own, only bigger cities had guards that protected the innocent, outside cities it's lawless. You could kill & loot each other, steal loot from others kill etc.

If you killed 5 "innocent" players you would get murder status and players could place bounty on your head = meaning you would get other players trying to hunt you down to get the bounty (when you gave the players head to a NPC guard you would then get the bounty posted by other players)

Also it took ~24 real hours for 1 murder count to decay, and guards would attack you on sight if you tried to enter lawfull cities as a known murderer.

There where also less harsh penalties for criminals, for example if you stole from someone else and got caught for the act - you would get criminal tag, but still could stay in towns untill the tag wore off, but you are freely attackable by players who witnessed your thieving.

Also I had lots of fun making homemade traps in that game. I just dropped a trapped chest in the ground, and curios players would go try to open it and *boom* a bomb blew in their face, resulting in their death + free loot for me in the form of players corpse :D

The only secure items / money you could have was the things you had in the bank. Even players houses could be looted if somone stole your key.

If Fallout MMORPG would have same free loot / kill rules like good old Ultima Online had, It would be the best MMORPG to come out since they destroyed Ultima Online.

Example screenshot of Ultima Online, a lot of playeres gathered at an event:
http://www.wired.com/news/images/full/uo_f.jpg

As you can see if has the same topdown isometric view as fallout 1,2 & tactics.

In reality I guess the old Ultima Online client could be modded to a fallout online client, since there excists player run shards who have made their own maps & graphics.

Anyway if you see "3d" verisions of the ultima online client, it's an attempt to make Ultima Online 3d ish & better graphics, but the majority of the UO players on official & player run servers still go with the good old 2d client.

Cannot realy find any good screenshot since I'm posting from work with a stupid proxy that don't allow many gaming sites :(

edit: Here I found a good site with stories & screenshots from the game.
http://www.aschulze.net/ultima/stories9/release1.htm

Before they patched the game to shit it was a reeealy realy good game. Mainly the first 2-3 years.

I never played UO (or WOW for that matter)... but this is the strangest definition of patch I have ever heard.

I guess the bottom line is - if UO was patched to be more popular = more $$, you can hardly blame them. They are a private, for-profit corp after all.

Blame Capitalism!

I hope we have PvP in V13, but it should have consequences, like reputation and other things. So, instead of simply being a cowardly lamer who kills people for the lulz, you should gang with some guys and make your raider band that regulary raids towns and cities. That would be AWEOMSE.

Note that all the things i listed are in WOW.
And i wrote that it will be horrible monstrosity WITH.
Might that mean that i dont like wow ?

I dislike mmos. Thats it. They are mostly repetetive , boring and uninnovative.
I have tried most of them, yet none of them could even keep me intrested for long. Even the pvp centered ones ended up becoming boring, as i found it to be rather pointless, in my own opinion.
There never is much effect or consequence in pvp. If thats different in V13, i might be interesting.

Now i admit that you can say that im being all pessimistic, but its mmo after all. How much innovation do you think they really will add ?
When it comes to MMOs, i always expect the worst. That way i cant be dissapointed at all.

so basically, your main gripe with a fallout MMO is that there would be other players doing stuff?

isnt that kinda the point?
most of the stuff you list there have already been pointed out as being in the original games already... so youre mainly annoyed cos its some player doing it and not the computer...

I'd say, compare the whole thing to World of Warcraft. Now WoW is an extreme, because it is ridiculously hyped, considering that in my country (Holland) alone are more than 1 million players, meaning that more than 1/17th of all people plays this game. Yes, line up 17 people, you'll have 1 or 2 WoW players.

But say it becomes as popular. What has WoW added to the Warcraft universe (other than billions of dollars)?

Really, all it was about was showing the players the familiar places on the islands, but it had nothing to do with storyline progression. Or at least very little.

But Warcraft requires no storyline, it's always been about convenient gameplay and flashy fantasy. Fallout, on the other hand, is very story and atmosphere dependant.

So what will most likely happen is that the graphics will be atmospheric, but the storyline shallow (MMO's tend to be shallow) and it will mainly be a sight-seeing tour through a world of Fallout.

Now this is an extreme, it might be much smaller scale and far less hyped, meaning it wont be as shallow and we won't have 12 year old boys yelling in l33tsp34k, but that'll mean it won't be as popular and soon lose support, most likely.

But hey, even after this rant, what can we do but wait and see? :)

I do not know what will happen with the lawsuit but there is some info from the studio (Masthead) that will develop V13 project

original link (Bulgarian language)
http://forplay.bg/index.php/forplay_site/Features/Intervyu-s-Masthead-studios-3

Google translate(I've tried to correct the translation as much as I can), The V13 part:
forplay: Well, let's talk about the real thing. Tell us more about Vault 13 - MMOto which you were entrusted from Interplay. We know that you probably can not tell us much, but we will be happy with even a small 'yellow' gossip.

AA: Yes, we have contracts that limit our side from giving information, officially Interplay will deal with media relations and public space. What I can say, without creating any problems for the studio that in early April signed a preliminary agreement with Interplay to develop a draft V13. There are still things to done from a legal issue, but I can certainly say that we will develop the title. I can tell that the game will use Earthrise processing engine.
As surely everyone who is interested in V13 is now knows- Chris Taylor will oversee the project, certify it officially here. This is the creator of the Fallout games and I will be proud to work together. I've talked with him several times and he is extremely enthusiastic about the project because it is the universe, which he so lovingly created. Interplay have almost finished with the pre-production and we expect shortly to begin the real work. The entire project was produced by a very famous name of Interplay, but will allow them to announce it when they see fit. What can I say about him is that there are over 10 titles behind. On the other hand the experience of Chris Taylor to Lord of the Rings Online will help a lot for V13.

forplay : And that more stringent controls and external interference do you worry less? Obviously with Earthrise you have a lot of freedom, but with Interplay the things will not be the same

AA: Honestly, we as a developer, we are more relaxed because we do not take the risk. Of coursewe will not have fulll freedom, but on the other hand, this oversight by Interplay and others, ensures a more professional Western-style production. We should just do our job, nor somebody will prevent us, neither have much to worry us. If this was our first project - yes, definitely I would have worried more that the V13 will be looking to the world when we start the real development. But the fact that the work of our team is going so smoothly Earthrise gives me confidence that everything will be okay.

forplay: What happened that such a project, loaded with so much expectations is entrusted to a native studio, which has not even made his debut MMO?

AA: I was the initiator of the whole thing in the beginning of this year I made contact with them. Their representatives came several times to Sofia to see our office and our work in Earthrise. They've liked the team and the technology that we have developed and so things zadvizhiha deal. In general we can say that everything started from a simple email that I sent them.

Personally i hope it's not tied down by the MMO Model that wow and everquest made so popular, which imo is a mistake a lot of developers make. I think Fallouts universe offers the chance to create a new dynamic if you will.

For example, in WoW you need your healers and damage dealers. Its all defined and rigid. ASSUMING FOOL Has something like raids (Dunno, exploring vaults inhabited by mutants or something), i'd hope they set it up for smaller groups of players, say 5 or 10 tops.

No healers, tanks, bosses. Everyone has guns and armor, can hack and pick. Its just you have people specializing, so you'd have a team medic so to speak with high first aid skills. Techys for hacking and picking doors. Everyone has weapons though and are more than capable of solo play and killing. For gods sake none of the FO3 bullshit of being able to be a jack of all trades.

If you insisted on having a guild style system, you would have factions that kept in contact via pipboys and radio, hell, you could even go VOIP.

With the vast amount of wrecked buildings and typical size of MMO's, you could probably even take over the wreckages, setting something up similar to the Rileys Ranger base (For those who have played FO3) or the military base (FO1).

Rather than a straight bottle cap economy, you could engineer it like the first two games where obviously surviving guns, food and other items has far higher value than hard currency, so a lot of transactions involve trading items and making up the difference in caps, (FO1 and 2) rather than straight cap payments (FO3).

FOOL has potential. It's just how they go about developing it. In my opinion, one of the unique things they have the chance to do here is genuinely make the player feel like just another wastelander, trying to stay alive, rather than the normal MMO Model of "You are the hero of the land".

I am curious how they will work deaths though. Diablo hardcore style where one death and you have to restart, or something like you lose consciousness, your body is looted by your attacker and your found by a trading caravan and taken to the nearest settlement.

Lets hope they pull off something like Fallen Earth, which unlike most mmo's, actually has a good/mature playing audience, mainly because it is kind of hidden from WOW type audiences. I have to say, after playing it for a couple months, It is (community wise) the best mmo I have played. Sense the mmo is going to be made by interplay, We can expect it to be rather hidden/under advertised unlike mainstream mmo's, leaving only the ones who actually follow Fallout to play it. Case in point like I explained, Fallen Earth. I personally picked up Fallen Earth just to tie myself over until V13.
