VATS or not?

Moloch Horridus

First time out of the vault
Are there combat related perks that are used in VATS only, meaning no benefit if one avoids using VATS entirely? Is there any reason to avoid VATS, is it still godmode-like abomination as it was in unmodded Fallout 3? How much skills do matter in combat outside VATS?

How about minigames, lockpicking & hacking etc. PC skill or your "skill"?

Is it a roleplaying game or shooter with such elements?

Lists most, if not all the perks, there are a great deal that only work in VATS.

Thanks!

And VATS is a feature, not a requirement, use it if you wish, dont if you, well, dont.

If the skills I might invest skillpoints in don't really matter in non-VATS combat, then VATS is what I'll use... if it on the other hand is still "broken" as it was before then what?

What did you think was "broken" about VATS in FO3?

Well, im sure the PC game at least, will have a bunch of balance mods, but looking at the vids of the game, it does look like its a bit easier to hit in VATS now, versus FO3 vanilla. In any case, ill have to play the game once, get a feel for it, before I choose how to play, but im sure gonna give VATS a try, with my trusty silenced rifle/handgun!

That you take no damage from enemy fire while the VATS animation plays ~ only 10% from what you would usualy take.

That you had a higher chance to hit enemies then outside of VATS ( I think )

and a few more points.

^ These +
the fact that about 60+ % of the time you shoot from cover with 95% chance to hit every other bullet you send towards your enemy hits the wall that was not in a way.

Maybe all this was by design, but I consider that broken. Or just plain idiocy.

Apparently one can still shoot walls when shot was supposed to be clear, but are you more vulnerable or not? Are your skills magically improved when entering VATS?

Can you bypass stupid minigames and let your PC's stats really count?

I've only put in a couple hours on my char and I'm still at level 1 but I took trigger discipline as a trait and guns as a tag skill and so far using the varmint rifle and 357 pistol, I've had a similar number of critical headshots in VATS as I have aiming manually.

I was able to crouch and snipe a couple of coyotes with one shot each from a good 200 yards out, just using the rifle's iron sights: a much better result than most of my attempts to use VATS. (one out of two shots seems to miss with VATS using this char unless the range is point blank)

Since I'm not that far into the game I can't really tell at this point if VATS is really as much of a god mode button as in FO3, but I am liking the fact that I can get kills without it and not waste a ton of ammo in the attempt.

I agree that with the addition of ironsights I stopped using VATS, but I don't need ANY gun level now because ironsights are damn straight...

Also I use "bullet time" mod, it still uses AP and doesn't make me invulnerable or shoot faster than Flash.
