Ever wanted to know more about Van Buren and it's areas, well now you can. We here at NMA have obtained a design doc for the Denver/Dog City area, here's a preview:
Denver is a pre-War city that was being rebuilt when the War started; prisoners on work release salvage what they can from the city while evading huge packs of hungry dogs that roam the streets.
The city consists of 3-4 large maps, with 10-15 smaller maps or floorplans (covering various buildings and high-rise floors). The salvagers are about 20 NCR former prisoners on a special work release program, salvaging stuff for NCR in exchange for their eventual freedom. The dogs are the now-feral descendents of local pets and specially-bred police dogs. Rats, giant cockroaches, mutant bats, and climbing lizards are common hazards, as well as robot police dogs sent to enforce the "quarantine" on the PC.
So now you can know all about that fabled area called Denver.

Sweet indeed!!!

Just passed my eyes over it. Will have to wait until the weekend to have time to read it all...

Just from glancing over it, it looks fairly good. The local fauna sounded apropos with the setting style.

Again, what a shame that so much work went to waste, the same way as Jefferson. It is good that such work does see the light of day in some way, so the designers can share a bit more of their efforts with the community. Whether the aspects of the design are debateable, as with the placeholder pic of the CRB-S, there is no mistaking that there was good effort put into this. Some elements, like the New Plague, would fit in with one reason why the FEV was created.

Indeed, although I'm a bit skeptical on the mutant bats.

This is really important to the Fallout modding community, so they can see how a real design doc looks like. The location checklist should be a must in all design docs from the modders, for instance, as the way the document is ordered. The placeholder pics are just that, they give some important detail or a general feeling about tiles or NPCs, but they aren`t specific, since that`s the role for concept art, that should give an image closer to the general art guidances as devised from the setting.

Different approaches to the problems that face different types of PCs, sound cues, snapshot ideas of many different endings, NPCs with substance, even if that`s not shown in the final game, examples of normal and dumb dialogues, choices, choices, choices...everything that can make a total conversion stand out is here guys, pay good attention to this doc.

Although this is a July 2003 review of the doc, and no doubt many things changed afterwards, like the bus (and maybe the bats, i don´t recall if they were in or out) it is still a great design doc, much more Falloutish than i thought, and deserves praise.

I've begun reading it, and it is pretty impressive. I love seeing the notes added in by Josh, the various map layouts, example pictures, etc.

This is excellent, and a great score, Odie.

I wonder if, in case IPLY dies, a huge modding team could be assembled and finish van buren...
Im dreaming, of course, but it there a possibility?

No, because it would be an infringement of intellectual property and because no self-respecting development team wants to waste their time and talent finishing a game somebody else scrapped.

It's a shame all this work will never see the light of the day...
Would be a nice storyline for a Fallout:pen and paper game with friends anyways... no one can sue me for that

I would do this... if I could.

Do you mean "if I had any talent for making games and by the way I have no self-respect", or "if I was filthy rich and could just order someone to do it for me"?

Maybe if I really payed attention to mrs. per say everytime she don`t like what someone said... or wrote...

Maybe you should take it to the Vats - you'll find a number of your fellow countrymen there.

Ok, I think that's enough of that.

Odin - Any chance of gettng design docs for other areas?

If you're nice, I might give you the design document for Teh Sikret Rmy Base for Independence Day.

Damn, it would have been nice to see this project come to fruition. I live in the Rocky Mountain region (Laramie, Wyoming), and the "Denver Doc" is a fun read just because I can relate to some of the geography that is talked about.

For instance, my mother used to work in the "Lowry Hospital" that is talked about, located on Lowry AFB near Denver. Also, I drive by the "Police HQ/Mint/City Hall" area on Colfax Avenue whenever I'm going to concerts. There are a whole bunch of renovated concert halls on that street. The designers apparently didn't incorporate those into the document, however. It would have been fun to see a salvager rock band in FO3 (ha!). :D

In summary, Denver would have been a fine place for a FO3 map. I'd like to see the Boulder, CO, design doc eventually also (when will that be "leaked" Odin? ), as I used to live there during an internship. The designers could have put in an Easter Egg about the "Bolder Boulder": 50,000 people running for 10-km from rabid dogs and super mutants!
