Viable Melee/Unarmed Build?

MutatedToe

First time out of the vault
Hi guys, I just finished today my first run through Fallout:NV. It was quite fun, but I wasn't too fond of always running into VATS and watching slow-motion headshots. For my second run-through I was thinking of starting a character who specialized only in close-ranged combat.

My question is, is such a build focusing only on melee/unarmed capable of clearing most of the areas in Fallout:NV? I mean, I'm not sure what chance there is when running into the face of a super mutant with a machine gun..... Any tips from someone who's made such a char would be very much appreciated.

Melee/Unarmed characters are actually quite powerful. It's a bit annoying when people run away from you and all, so stick to Light/Medium armor.

My Sneak/Melee/Unarmed char can one-shot Deathclaws with an Oh Baby! sneak attack :smug:

Awesome, that's exactly the type of char I was thinking of making. Didn't know you can sneak up on a deathclaw though :p

Yeah, it's pretty hard but possible as long as you approach from behind.

I had a 10 STR melee character... with heavy armor and stuff.
After I got my first Rebar Club from Nightkins (from Come Fly With Me), duuuude, I just Rebar-raped any bastard who got in my way. Then I climbed Black Mountain (at level 15~18 I think) and killed easily every Super Mutant. As a prize I got those fuckin' Super Sledges and it was like: "HOHOYOURASSISMINE".

If you make your build correctly, you will be able to beat ANY enemy in the game (except for Deathclaws)

Real men play Unarmed as their only combat skill.
The Thing with unarmed is that you are a one hit point wonder (not literaly) when you fuck an enemy braisn out with your fists you FUCKING FUCK HIM! but when they the drop on you and they have good range you will have it really hard to get them most of the time, so focus on ST, EN, AG, and posibly INT or maybe Luck instead.

Actually is good to focus on EN, a little in ST and some on Luck, but I don't spend too much on AG, unarmed weapons costs very low AP points and you can use Jet or Rocket if you need. (yes, I'm a druggie, the first perk I usually gain is Day Tripper :D).
And if you are using unarmed/melle as your main weapons Stonewall is a must.

The low is this, I hate when the enemy runs away and I have to chase them. And too much fun is doing a uppercut having Super Slam, the deathclaw drop like a sack of potatoes.
Also, that scribe perk that Veronica teachs you is very usefull if your style is agressive.
And there's nothing more satisfactory than cleanning Quarry Junction with only Pushy or Knock-Knock (I like Knock-Knock more than Oh, Baby!)

I did an Unarmed/Explosives build and it was very challenging, specially in the beginning. Until you visit the Boomers and get your hands on Thump-Thump you will pretty much rely on your fists and hand-grenades, unless you have the Mercenary Pack, the other grenade launchers are very weak or too slow firing; missile launchers are very powerfull, but they are very situational, since their ammo weights a lot and you can't carry too much missiles with you (10 missiles = 30 lbs! Ouch...).

After you reach 100 explosives is very fun to use that grenade minigun with 25mm explosives.

Unarmed and melee obviously suck compared to small guns and energy weapons. Increased wear, the complexity of taking perks, time for you to run up to the enemy taking damage = shit. The game was originally to sharpen a small guns.

That's why children use guns and men use melee/unarmed. :P

With Unarmed I had it hard until my assassination of Caesar with C-4, I got five balistic fists and just combined them into one, The Ballistic fist is the best weapon you can get, it ignores armor, if you use cross you can just punch a hole in everybody, Even Praetorians and the Legate.

Ballistic Fist vs Mantis Gauntlet ?

Anyone has experience with those two ? I'm really interested , is it just what type of play is preferred or is that sheer amount of power/criticals that counts better in game ?

I mean , look at that critical score on Gauntlet . But BF hits like an elephants heel .

Boy oh boy , just try it . You need less AP and you have 4 unique attacks . It is devastating , and no need for high amount of ammo , just high amount of adrenaline .

I never could find a Mantis Gauntlet until my Melee-Guns Mr House run, so I really wouldn't know wich one is the best.

But i found one at the start of game in Primm , Nash was selling it . I also saw on many forums they can't find it too . Is there some kind of a trigger to get that thing ?

The only unarmed weapon I find in Primm is the Bladed Gauntlet. I found the Mantis Gauntlet in westside. Klamath bob was selling it. Myabe it has something to do with Luck?

I did find that one in the Bison Hotel .
I had Luck upped to 7 by implant , as i firstly go to gamble and get money for implants . So my base luck was 6 . When i got to Primm it was 7 .
I'm sure level counts more into it , it has to .

I think Luck is the determining factor, or at least one of them, my Uanrmed character had low luck like 3 or something, I decided to go less for criticals more for raw power, kinda dumb from my part but I wanted it that way.

Depends of your Strength and build. BF needs 9 ST and Mantis Gauntlet 4 ST. Of course the BF deals a lot more damage with a single blow, but Mantis has only 10 DPS less and deals a lot of critical damage (30, but you have x 3 critical chance).
With a high Luck or Finesse + Better Criticals, Mantis Gauntlet is one hell of a weapon.

But Ballistic Fist doesn't ignore DT.

I found Cram Opener on a Little Busters dead body in good condition. I didn't kill him , hes on the left when you enter Freeside and turn to the left alley between Mormont Fort . For some reason he's dead...maybe because i killed all bounties , but a free weapon is a free weapon . Was level 20 .

Cram Opener is a very good weapon for early game or against medium foes.
After level 20 it tends to loose it's usefulness, since you are probably more strong, with better perks and can maintain the cost of possessing the very powerfull weapons.

The downside with Cram Opener AND Mantins Gauntlet is they have very low health, you are constantly reparing them.
