Polish publisher Cenega kicks off their new official site with a voice acting competition. The catch: you have to buy the game from them first. Or at least I am taking Ausir's word for this:
The winner of the contest will voice one of the characters in Fallout 3. To take part in the contest you have to preorder and pay for FO3 by August 20, upload an MP3 file with you playing the role of a selected character from the list of available ones, and convince your friends to vote for you, in order to get the most votes for your recording.

The following characters are available:

A Brotherhood of Steel knight stationed at the GNR tower. He speaks on the radio without his helmet that would distort his voice.

Gary Staley - a trader, not much is known about him. He runs a cheap diner at the Rivet City marketplace. He believes that people like his cuisine, but the truth is that it's just the only thing the citizens of the poorer parts of the town can afford.

Janice Kaplinski - a scientist, Doctor Li's co-worker, she helps with food conditioning experiments.

Anna Holt - - a scientist, Doctor Li's co-worker, she helps with food conditioning experiments.

Maggie from Megaton - a girl whose parents died during a raider attack. She was rescued by Billy Creel, who's been taking care of her ever since. She's a little, friendly girl running round around the town.

Paul Hannon - an African American boy, member of the Tunnel Snakes gang. A nice boy that tries to fit in with his less nice colleaguess and impress them somehow.

Wally Mack - a member of the Tunnel Snakes gang, a few years older than the player character. He is arrogant and very self-confident.

50 runners-up will get Fallout 3 t-shirts.
Since there's nothing on the page in English, I'm assuming the voices are to be done in Polish and will grace the localized version only. Ausir also cites a release date of October 6, which is no more than three days away from Amazon's Oct 3.

They mention the release date as October 6, but note that the date might change.

And yes, the voices have to be Polish and will be used in the Polish version only.

In other news, Ausir successfully uses us for his advertising needs.

This makes me curious how Bethesda come up with the names for their NPCs: Anna Holt is the protagonist of a Swedish series of crime novels.

Not as if I'm being paid for anything other than pages of translated text (and not that I would mind being paid for this)...

I doubt you could find an accurate answer for Bethesda as a whole but it would be interesting to hear from each individual designer on that.

Eh, coincidences do happen, Per, whether it be Wally Mack or Garey Staley.

Also, I thought the usual course of events for a pre-release contest was for the prize to be - like - a free copy of the game with autographs from the devs or some shit. "As a prize, you get to work for us, and give us money!" is kind of less enticing.

I love the "Watch trailers" link on the site. It links to a youtube search for 'fallout' ...

That polish site has a spelling error. :?

Not to mention the funny sounding "Zamów preorder", which roughly translates into... "Preorder the preorder". :?

Spelling error, where? I know you made one: it's Polish not polish. And second, it translates into order the preorder... which sounds silly
nonetheless. :P

But it does suck that you have to preorder the game to participate in the contest. A free copy as a reward would be a thousand times better. I wouldn't have to pay to see how sucks as Fallout, and if it's at least a nicely done spin-off. ;)

Fans as voice-actors just seems like a bad idea.

Every mouth-breathing fanboy slobbering into their headset and uploading sound files for a video game just seems.... terrifying.

That sounds awful. It's very artificial, they both have bad diction and intonation, not to mention the sound of the voices itself is annoying. If they allowed everyone to participate in competition I'm sure voice acting would be on higher level. Cheap shot Cenega.

Thank God we'll be able to choose which language version to
play... if I remember correctly.

I'm just curious, were they given specific lines to read and if so can we get a translation?

Nope, only the character descriptions from the newspost - they need to come up with lines to say themselves.

Then you will have even more crappy voices.

I remember GTA did something of this sort (you'll be featured on the radio), but i don't recall seeing you have to buy anything. Weak.

Maybe we should select NMA favourites and vote for them to not let lame talenless guys win because of their friends' votes? I'm probably not buying the game anyway but I hate bad voiceovers existing anywhere and some Polish Fallout fans may care anyway.

From what I recall (Fallout Tactics) the voiceovers done by professionals were bad too, so....who cares:p
(And yes, I'm thinking of narrator's voice...I know it's hard to beat Ron Perlman but that wasn't comparable, that was terrible)

Bethesda wants to have more people to buy Fallout 3, am I right? So let me present new narration of Fallout 3:

"War. War neva ends, ma niggas."

- 50 cent

And game sells platinum.
