inXile has announced that the original Wasteland game will be included for free in the upcoming sequel Wasteland 2.
Wasteland 2 now to include the original game which started the post apocalyptic RPG genre

Newport Beach, CA - July 10th, 2012 - InXile Entertainment today confirmed that Wasteland 2 will include the original Wasteland game that was released in 1987. The original RPG is considered the godfather of post apocalyptic games and went on to win numerous awards. Computer Gaming World inducted Wasteland into their Hall of Fame, and in 1996 they ranked it the #9 best game from a list of 150 games.

"The #1 request we had during our Kickstarter campaign was to have the ability to play the first game. Fortunately EA has continued to support us on this project and has granted us the ability to bring the original to the players," said Brian Fargo, of inXile Entertainment. "It is great to be able to make Wasteland available for those feeling nostalgic or who want to experience it for the first time. It certainly will not be a pre-requisite to understand Wasteland 2, but it adds some extra flavor if you did play the prequel."

Wasteland is a registered trademark of inXile entertainment
Brian Fargo adds:
We cannot release it prior to Wasteland 2. It is to be bundled as part of Wasteland 2. I'm still happy to be able to get it in there at all.

If they do release comprehensive mod tools, I think it's only a matter of time before some people try to remake the original in the new engine.

I'm assuming EA is letting them do this without a fee? They seem to be teaming up with Inxile on a few things related to this. Does Fargo have a good relationship with them? Is EA trying to soothe some of the anti big publisher dialogue?

Fargo said:
I can't give specific details but the terms were very fair. I can tell you that most publishers would not have helped at ALL.

I dunno if there's no fee but if there is it's probably not much. And remember, EA is already letting inXile use materials from Wasteland that they technically own (like the Rangers, Citadel concepts, etc) without any fee.

So yeah, Fargo and EA have a really good relationship. EA already leveraged this into goodwill PR a bit with the whole Origin Kickstarter deal, so it's win-win for the two parties.

Awesome news!

I just hope this isn't some Origin-exclusive thing. Doesn't sound like it from his statement though.

Nice to hear. Despite not having had a 5-1/4" drive for 15 years now I'm still holding onto my original disks "just in case". Now I can have a legitimate copy. I really hope they at least update the save game system to allow multiple saves!

while this is great news I will definitely not forgive EA because they already wasted the second chance they had, I hope they go down (to the ground) and stay there this time.

How hilarious/trolly would it be if they included wasteland 1 in the boxed version, but only on floppies.

Of course, it'd be pretty cool if they included one 5 1/4th inch floppy (even if it's blank) in the box and had a code written on the label to redeem a digital version of wasteland 1.

That would be very awesome...

From Twitter:

"Some people seem to be worried that the WL1+WL2 bundle will be Origin-exclusive. Can you confirm it's not?"

Brian Fargo: "It is not for sure..."

EDIT: I think that was WorstUsernameEver who asked that question on Twitter. Sorry if I stole your thunder. :(

Why would you be stealing my thunder ahah? Yeah that was me, but I absolutely don't mind if someone else posts the tweet, the important thing is the content :P

This looks good. But it's EA and I think it's dancing with the devil. I just can't see what's in this for EA at the moment - 'good will' PR does not have enough value to that company. I just wonder if, for instance, they're hoping to capitalise on the Wasteland name somehow, FOBOS style, if W2 does well. Or... well, I just think there's got to be some evil plan somewhere and I am uncomfortable with Fargo having any involvement with them.

Maybe EA is setting themselves up to buy out InXile and use them for future Wasteland games to compete with Bethesda and the Fallout series.

Well, what if ancient aliens are behind it?

That'd be pretty pointless. InXile has been ranting about the publisher deal ever since the Wasteland 2 Kickstarter, they'd be stupid to join up the biggest of them all.

Besides, I'm pretty sure if they really wanted an apocalyptic game they could start their own or something. Wasteland isn't exactly famous within the masses. Not like they're going to play a true RPG anyways.
