Wasteland 2 Kickstarter Update #10, First concept art

WorstUsernameEver

But best title ever!
For the latest Wasteland 2 Kickstarter update, Brian Fargo talks about the jobs crowdfunding can generate, how we can help spread the word about the game and showcases the very first Andree Wallin concept art for the title:
Did I just hear all 43,000+ of you say ‘How can we help?’

I am glad you asked!!

One thing you will notice in that list of potential jobs above is that nowhere in that list do you see ‘Marketing Lady’ or ‘PR Guy’. That is because we don’t have these positions, nor do we plan to hire them. We want to spend the money on the game, and only the game.

This is where you come in…

All 43,000+ of you are our marketing and PR team. We need your help to get the word out that the Kickstarter countdown is on.

• Post to your Facebook pages with links back to the Kickstarter.
• Follow @BrianFargo on twitter and retweet my Wasteland related tweets.
• Post it to forums where you think it is relevant.
• Send emails out to everyone you know.
• Go to our website and put our Doomsday countdown clock on your website.
• Get a friend or family member to buy in.
• Shout it from the rooftop.
• Do some early shopping for Christmas 2013!

If every person who has pledged manages to get one more person to buy in for $15, we will increase the budget by over $600,000. You can help the project in very tangible ways by helping us get the word out.
NMA was sent the Andrée Wallin art earlier, so we can offer you a much higher resolution version:

That is some badass artwork. <3

The image on the kickstarter page is pretty small. How'd you get the big version and when can I get a wallpaper-sized one? ::drools::

EDIT: Oh, the image on the article is different now. The image on this thread is much bigger. thanks. :)

Brother None provides hookers and drugs to Fargo and the team.

I hope Fargo won't get mad at me for uploading this version, which he sent me a few days ago, but yip, that's the highest resolution. Should be available on their press site soon too, I hope.

I like it. Cliche pose and it's got the look of promotional art, but it evokes that feeling you want from PnP-esque character art: these are badass dudes, they feel like they have interesting stories, I want to play them in-game.

I like the art, but it comes across as very New Vegas. I was hoping for a bit more distinction between WL2 and NV.

Yeah, I kind of agree. It's a kickass piece of art, but is it a kickass piece of art for Wasteland? To quote neogaf:

'I hope the final game has more of the throwback bright 80's punk fashion and color of the original, if the game ends up just being brownscale it'll be a missed opportunity. '

I want to see a distinctive STYLE as well as well-drawn graphics. Brown post-apoc is a bit overdone these days, let's make it stand out a bit more. I'd like more colour.

(Incidentally, to me it could be a piece of New Vegas concept art as well - the brown, the ranger type outfits, the goggles etc)

I dunno, modern military gear immediately differentiates it from Fallout to me even though New Vegas flirted a bit with it here and there (Joshua Graham's outfit and the Riot Armors mostly). I do agree that it's not what I was hoping for.. it's not bad, but it just doesn't really seem to have anything that could be considered distinctive.

The image is super fucking fancy.

It doesn't remind me of FNV or Fallout at all. The style is way too modern and militarized. Also I wouldn't be worried about "brownification" yet. It's just the first piece of concept art and not the final game.

/Edit: One of the guys has a skull around his neck. Right after I've seen it, I had to think about Cuthbert and his "guardpost" from the Dark Tower. Pretty cool.

Agreed, superb artwork. And some of of have it backwards, if anything FNV artwork reminds this artwork, not the other way around ;P. MCA and some other people said it bluntly they were inspired by Wasteland and used some ideas of BF and his team.

I need to mull it over a bit more. It's just a piece of concept art, and the earliest one at that, so I wouldn't get too worked up over it in either way. As a piece of art, its very nice. As what I see for "Wasteland", I'm not so sure.

Ultimately, I was hoping to see more of an 80's Pen & Paper theme for Wasteland, and this piece looks too modern to me, from the sunglasses to the color-scheme.

As far as being a group of bad-ass Rangers, its kind of "cool"...I'm just not sure it has much of a Wasteland feel to it...

Not that we had anything to go by that was this detailed, back in '87, but if I saw that piece of Artwork with no context I would never in a million years think it was connected to Wasteland.

I think it gets the point across of the Desert Rangers being a military organization, but it doesn't go beyond that into suggesting what the world / game / look of Wasteland is going to be. At least, I hope it doesn't suggest what it is going to be, because if so I'm not feeling it.

The art used in the original Wasteland game was way too primitive and sparse to really be relevant. The connections between NV and Wasteland are evident to anyone who has played both games, but there's no reason for the games to resemble each other so strongly on a aesthetic level.

Nice, but yeah, feels somehow clean-ish in a "mission accomplished" sort of way. And armed to the teeth. lvl 68?

Radiation/protection?

Everything in that concept art is amazing, except for the guns. I really hope they don't make the guns too modern and "tacticool".

Excellent art Work, one of the guys resemble the CS guy. Now a location shot ala the Glow or the exploded Base Cochise shot would be nice.

The original art fore wasteland i think it cant be used as a base on the new art. The art i most want to see is the Robots and humanbots, unless they go 1950 retro on it i think it has been done to death.

I want a beard like that guy.

Not exactly how I imagined Rangers to be, but it is really cool. Looks great on my desktop too.
We'll see in which direction art will go. This is just a start.
