Wasteland 2 Kickstarter Update #2

Good they've supported the idea of crowdsource translation instead of feeding the "professional" localizers.

Though I have myself suggested this idea to them, I have some concerns about the quality of crowdsourced localization.

Hopefully there will be some wiki-like tool to edit what others have done. And I'm sure there must be someone to supervise and to make final decisions on translation.

And now the other shoe drops.

Apparently Obsidian isn't doing too hot atm, with a few stories floating around.

Fallout New Vegas failed to get an 85 rating on Metacritic, which means Bethesda isn't obligated to give them a bonus and pay royalties for the game. They had to lay off a bunch of people today, and cancel at least one project that was in development.... The reallly shitty thing is NV has an 84 on Metacritic.

Apparently Avellone vented about it a bit on twitter, but has since deleted his twitter account....

Seriously, how poisoned is this industry, where your livelihood relies not on sales, but on a fucking metacritic aggregate score?

I commented on this in another thread. It is a damn shame. Obsidian deserved better than that IMO. The gaming industry is pretty bad about shit like this.

He didn't delete his whole damn account, just the tweet it seems.

But yes, unlike at the end of the cartoons, the villain [Beth] seems to be constantly winning here.

I'm not a big fan of F:NV but it was way better than fallout 3.
And with the constraints Obsidian have making it, it could not have been much better.
I don't know if this expression exist in english but Avellone must "have the balls".
Make you want to give more for wasteland 2 for sure.

Balls indeed my friend. :D

I wonder how will this "Wasteland 2" drive affect Avellone's own wish to crowdfund an RPG for Obsidian as he mentioned before.

A postponement at least for now seems likely and prudent, as any potential donors found their wallets a lot lighter these days.

I really hope it will affect. Considering how good can their games be without any constraints put by publishers (time, gameplay etc), I'm ready to put a lot of money into it.

If the Obsidian can hold on until the W2 kickstarter is finished I would gladly donate money for their project or even a project to keep the company alive and out of debts. Yes we should start a Keep Obsidian Alive campaign :)

I don't know about you guys, but I poured a lot of money in the W2 Kickstarter so I won't be able to do that again for a while, even if I was willing.

I know an open source game project that relies on pottle for this purpose and it seems to work very well:
http://translate.sourceforge.net/wiki/pootle/index

This might work for open source games, but believe me, this game's translation won't be crowdsourced. I can't imagine them publicly releasing all dialogue from the game to the public before the game is out, and there's no way a crowdsourced translation can be made for the game's release date.

However, there are certainly professional translators among fans, and this translation would work great if done by them and consulted by the community.

Reading over the Official Wasteland Forums and there seems to be a hard core element of frankly idiots who want to see a carbon copy of the original wasteland from 1988 and dont want to see ANY implementation of 90's RPG Magic - Fallout seems to be a dirty word on there in some quarters.

I think they have missed the point of this Kickstarter project...

I don't think anyone wants a carbon copy of the original. They are simply resisting those who want it to simply a "Fallout 3" under a different name, and not a sequel to Wasteland.

isn't the point to make a Wasteland 2, a direct sequel that builds on the gameplay of Wasteland?

or are you trying to say it's to create a new Fallout, but with a different name?

I think people are missing two very critical points here... This is about making an RPG from the golden era of gaming, 90's RPG's SUCH AS Fallout, Baulders Gate ect - No-one is asking for a 'Fallout 3/4 by another name BUT people are snubbing ideas that are GREAT for the sake of snubbing ideas because it could be seen as 'too fallout.'

Isometric View - Nope too Fallout
Interface - Nah, too much like a pipboy.

Things can be done in gaming now that weren’t even dreamed of in 1988 - do you honestly believe the original wasteland would have resembled what it did if the technology was available to the original devs as what is now? Course not.

By limiting vision and restricting ideas from popular franchises you're dooming the project before its even got off the ground.

My final point is that Fallout always WAS an unofficial sequel to Wasteland and has always been seen as so - Wasteland 2 SHOULD learn from the success of the original Fallout series.

I'd be happy with a strategic combat system, more sophisticated then that of fallouts, also a new party system BUT I feel the game-play should have a resemblance to a 90's hard core RPG... The game SHOULD resemble Fallout and Baulders Gate to some extent and should appeal to those players.

The setting, story, characters ect should be that of WASTELAND....

I think that most people wants something like fallout 1 & 2

pledging really slowed, I don't think there will be 1200k when Fargo will wake up, they should make video updates and maybe some trailer even with concept art so video sites like game trailers could pick it up

To be fair I agree...

What's wrong with making an RPG similar to FO1+2 within the wasteland story? Nothing in my mind - it isnt a 'Fallout by another name' its a wasteland sequel in the style of a 90's RPG.

Or more accurately a 90's INTERPLAY RPG... Which I thought is what we were going for people?

Take a look at the forum, people are suggesting an 8-Bit game and having 'paragraph books' for the text that they cant fit in the game..

REALLY... This isnt 1988 folks...

I could go either way on this. A descriptive wall of text is capable of drawing me in just as much if not more than a iso or 3d world. Some wonderful stuff was made in ISO though, the temples in Amn and the Drow city in BG2 come to mind.
