Wasteland 2 new screenshot

Ok, I believe there is something that I think everybody is missing:, the sniper is crouching.... So did they finally introduce the possibility to change stance? I ask this cause I know there was a debate about this after they released the seccond gameplay video

This what people tend to confuse. Fallout used a 2D engine(the limited tile sets). While the game looked 3D NOT because how it was rendered or its engine, but because of its Isometric perspective.

What we want in party based RPGs is Isometric perspective, with 3D engines. Isometric perspective can be done in both 2D and 3D engines(check this out), the later just offer far more options.

Isometric perspective looks better, because its the "money shot" you are fixed to one angle, so you can have a much more details and artistic freedom. Obviously this work when you need move around. Simple now can we lay to rest this stupid decade old argument?!

Isometric works in both 3D and 2D. The argument was that if Fallout's developers could, they would have used full 3D, while retaining the perspective.

Also, isometric isn't inherently looking better. What matters is the execution.

How anyone can believe FO would have looked as good with 1998 full 3d...

I'm saying that if the developers could, they would've used full 3D. But since that wasn't an option at the time, they went with converting 3D models to 2D sprites. Is it really that hard?

I'm not trying to gainsay you, but I live in a desert and I've vacationed in other deserts and that's not incredibly uncommon.

To be frank, I don't care if it happens in real deserts. The task of the level artist is to make levels look good. This level doesn't look good in my opinion.

My first impression was that it very solidly evoked a "tabletop" feel, which I think works well with the direction they're taking things in and with their aesthetic. It definitely doesn't look like a AAA, but I'm quite pleased with it, all in all.

OK, I agree this looks very "tabletop"-esque. I guess I just had different expectations, that's all.

What Fallout has going for it is the unique art style, not the fact that it's 2D.

The uniqueness of its style owing more to its 2D paintovers, rather than unique 3D modelling

I would say the UI looks 100 times better than when they first revealed it. Looking forward to seeing the graphics improve further, too. Still wish they had gone for hexes, they're just so much more appealing for some reason.

When i saw the game play that was posted months ago i thought it looked like an good game, however the graphics looked out of date before it was released. the new picture is quite promising and the graphics look far better, at first i wasn't thrilled by turn taking attacks instead of real time action, however i am beginning to see it in a different light.

In the Kickstarter, the vast majority of backers put "graphics" at the bottom of their lists for resource-allocation priority. So yeah, no one really cared about that first and foremost, so the designers focused on audio, UI and gameplay more.

What I don't like is this floating interface. See below - Normally (old school) the interface will cover the pink areas, while modern interfaces are more spartan in appearance. This interface is a mix of both schools, its spartan, yet cluttered. One solid interface is preferable, ATM the pink areas are caught between old and new world.

Totally agree, as said, it looks like a clusterfuck and a MMO interface. ;)
A user on the rpg codex made some mockup which looks better than this, and he made it in his free time. ;P

If you want graphics, go stick your dick into a PS4 and jerk off waiting for Todd Howard's Fallout 4 or whatever the fuck is your high standard of great graphics.

BWAHAHAHAAHAHA! Nice.

I agree. Fuck the graphics. The backers said as much. We want a good RPG. Graphics are the least of my worries. Now if the gameplay and writing sucks...then I'm pissed.

Has various problems, such as the user now being unable to realign the interface elements or that this big thing doesn't scal with the screen resolution. You would need to make more graphics to support various resolution types (4:3, 16:9, etc) and then have it either in multiple sizes for low / high resoution or simply have it size up / down, which might not look ugly today, but it can in 5 years, when we are using even higher resolutions.

Look at any old game with fixed interface. In most cases they look really bad nowadays.

Amazing how many people are upset about the "old" graphics. For the heck of it I recently started playing through Baldur's Gate I & II again. I'm having a better time replaying classic games than I am playing a lot of the new ones that look great but are weak in the story department. The graphics are plenty good to know what is going on and get immersed in the world. It really makes me miss the RPG glory days of the mid-90s to early 2000s.

If Wasteland 2, Project Eternity, and Tides have a story and gameplay as good as the original Fallouts and Baldur's Gate then I couldn't be happier.

Why not just make it in a very very big resolution and then simply scale it down for the normal resolutions? That's how it will be in P:E. Besides, you can also always do it like Diablo 2 when they patched new resolutions in and add some extra ornaments etc. Beats every of these modern free floating ugly UIs.

Why would I want to obscure more of my vision with UI elements?
I like the open and modular look. It fits the style of the elements.
Also, simply making one in high resolution and downscaling that is not really going to work for different aspect ratios, I think.
I mean, it can be made to work, obviously. But obscuring ~30% of the game with basically nothing just for the sake of nostalgia?
I just don't see why it would be so much better.

I would only care about obscuring more screen estate if this game would be a fast paced real time game. Since it's not, I would much prefer a single block of UI like it was done good in the old days.

I don't know if you missed the thread title, which suggest what is being discussed here or lack the mental capacity for it(PS4 forums has a lot place for childish dick jokes, maybe you should visit them).

As note before the problem is the level of polish. If you compare the UI on this two screens:(look at full screen size, not forum shrinked)

You'll notice there are much improvement, but overall it is still lacks in polish. I suspect that in couple of month it will look much better.(usually UI final touches are very minor but makes a big impact)

As for graphics overall, I have to admit I expected more(maybe its on average setting to avoid high expectations?), it measures poorly compared to many decade old iso games. I hope its a polish thing, because they showed few good environments, but the majority of the areas I recently seen are very poor and the screenshots looks like one angle "money shots".

Seriously considering flagging this for a modmin, what's up your ass about the polish? Some of my best friends are polish (and ukrainian), I just don't see how its germane to the topic.

Are you serious?

He is talking about the amount of finetuning, looking into details, putting rough stuff together. "polishing". You may want to consult a vocabulary?
