What PC Gamer wants from Fallout 4

WorstUsernameEver

But best title ever!
While there's no news of a Fallout 4 announcement yet, there are good chances the title will be announced this year, given next-gen consoles are being unveiled, and PC Gamer saw the chance to put down their wishlist for the title.

Here's a snip:<blockquote>Make it about survival. In Bethesda’s hands, the Wasteland is fun. By the middle of a run through you’re clobbering Deathclaws with concrete capped rebars and sipping irradiated water without a care in the world. Possibly with a pinkie out. The point being is that the notion of survival becomes obsolete in a world dripped in caps to find, traders to sell to, and junk to collect. New Vegas has hardcore mode, forcing you to think about food, water, and rest, as well as altering the way meds and stimpaks work, but it’s still a world that can easily and comfortably be lived in. It needn’t be the main difficulty level, but the option to make the world a harsh place to live, to make the players think about every move, not just their weapon and perk choices, would give the ashy flavour of survival.

Bethesda’s Design, Obsidian’s Characters. There I was, wandering beneath a line-up of broken satellite dishes, looking for things to do when I spied a door. What could be behind it? A gang of gangers? A terrified NPC? A few steps towards it, a glance around to make sure there was nothing sneaking up. I popped the door. Behind it was a wall with “Fuck You” written on it. Bethesda’s worlds tend to be packed with detail, big and small. They’re places to live in and enjoy, and just brilliant places to explore. Their characters, however, are a lot less engaging. Obsidian’s take on New Vegas was packed with morally dubious Wastelanders with dark stories. Acquiring Boone as a follower, for example, meant leading a person out into a field for the deranged sniper to shoot. That’s dark enough, but as a player you could happily lead an innocent into Boone’s sights. Somewhere in the middle of Fallout 3 and New Vegas is the sweet spot they should be aiming for: dark, compelling characters in a curated world.

Treat us like PC gamers. I’ve never loaded up a Bethesda game and felt the studio really understood what PC gamers want from them. We have screen space and we have a pointing device that just seems to baffle them. I understand there’s a fictional reason for the Pipboy’s clunkiness, but all too often Bethesda will choose that over usability. Fallout 3 and New Vegas are remarkable examples of how to not lead a player through a game’s menus. I *have* to install a UI mod to deal with the endless scrolling of the inventories. When it comes to pure usability, divorce the theme from the menus

The same is true for FOV: the first thing I have to do in any Bethesda game is to hunt for an FOV hack. That I can do it is evidence that the engine is capable, and I’m still baffled that it’s not a native selection. Give me a damn slider.</blockquote>

The three biggest problems with Fallout 3 was too much combat, stupid writing and excruciating level design (from a gameplay standpoint).

And what people is weapon customization (is if there weren't already too many guns in the game) and survival...

To be honest we know what we are going to get, more fouling of the cannon, more crappy writing and bland level design.

One thing I would like to see is more intelligent communities. After 200 years people will have adapted and developed strategies to living post nuclear Armageddon. I am not saying there won't be a element of seek and fetch for some communities and individuals but when it comes to looking for a vital part for a machine you rely on don't ask random stranger you don't know from Adam to go find it without sending out your own scouts etc. And don't be held as the hero of the wastes because you find a part less than 5 min walk down the road in a building with the worst enemy your likely to find beeing a few mutated rats, if you have a community with some weapons more than knives, a hunting rifle with a few rounds will do the job.

I want Beth design only for visual design not game design. Maybe thier visual design would be good(or maybe not) but, their game design sucks.
Game system of TES always flawed.

and don't use level scaling. beth's level scailng is just sucks.

If u hate fallout 4 under bethesda so much, just dont buy it, bt im afraid all u guys will finally have one on ur shelve, isnnt?
Luv it or hate it, bethesda saved fallout series, interplay was also trying to go into the same direction where the current fallout games are, just look at fallout tactics, fallout brotherhood of steel on ps2, and cancelled fallout extreme, which all ended up in disaster, perhaps also led interplay to bankcruptcy.
Bethesda introduced loads of new people into fallout, much more than all the fans of fallout 1 and 2 combined, as long as fallout is in the hands of beth, fallout 4 will be more than just fine, being the game of the year once again without doubt.
Lets just face it: interplay tried to do what beth is doing and they failed, if you hate such a fact so much, why dont you make something surpass it? Thats right, you cant, so stop moaning, god himself wont hear ya

Actually I rather buy wasteland2 than fo4.
Actually, is there any reason to call fo4 "fallout"?
Genre is different from fallout, world is different from fallout, and different guys making it.
Resurrect? no just using it's name.
only good thing beth done is let obsidian to make sequel of real fallout.

Then again if it wasn't for someone (Bethesda) buying the rights to the Fallout series would NMA still exist? I doubt it. And if so in what capacity?

Oh jeebus. Just the mention of another Bethesda Fallout brings you guys out of the woodworks, it seems. Yeah, sure, we're all super grateful that Bethesda "saved" the Fallout franchise by shitting all over it. Just thrilled. Thanks.

NMA was existing just fine in the twilight years between Tactics and Bethesda's abortion, I believe. Fallout 3 certainly increased this site's traffic, no question. That doesn't make it not a shitty Fallout game, though, so what's your point?

One good thing actually did come out of Fallout 3... New Vegas. On the other hand, if Bethesda hadn't bid for the rights to Fallout, Obsidian or inXile or, y'know, almost anyone but Bethesda might have picked it up.

But Bethesda was just the highest bidder. It's not like the franchise would have died if they hadn't bought it. Are the alternative all compelling? I don't know, it's difficult to come up with a credible "what if" scenario. But, as someone that actually did enjoy Fallout 3's exploration and is currently replaying it in brief snippets, I have to say that I never bought and will never buy the "you should be grateful to Bethesda!" argument.

I concur. However, when you look at the corporate gaming world around you. I'd rather have had Bethesda handle the Fallout series than say, EA (GaG) or Ubisoft! Once again I ask you, if the Fallout series hadn't been purchased, (regardless of who did the purchasing) would NMA still exist and if so in what capacity?

I don't know? It's difficult to say what would have happened, but if I had to guess, while the userbase would be smaller than it is today, the site would go on, probably cover mods and other post-apocalyptic titles a bit more.

Take the forum index and subtract "Fallout 3 Discussion", "Fallout: New Vegas Discussion", "Fallout 3 Gameplay & Tech", "Fallout: New Vegas Gameplay & Tech", and "Fallout 3 and New Vegas Modding".

Bethesda revived the franchise completely while still keeping the same gritty visuals and depressing colors and combining that with compelling characters and ideas to create a masterpiece not unlike the previous Fallout games. Now i have played every fallout game and by far my favorites are Fallout 3 and Fallout 1.Fallout 1 made the franchise and introduced us to the 50's style post-apocalyptic world in an unforgettable fashion.Fallout 3 reimagined the franchise for better or worse gameplay vise but changing nothing in the feel of the game. The story was still interesting and had that classic fallout style to it.The visuals were amazing, the sidequests fun and diverse and most of the locations unpopulated, wrecked and even scary at times. It was truly a great game. Now Obsidian got the rights and just took the coding, copy pasted it and made a few modifications. The items and textures stay absolutely the same and i know that the area around Vegas wasn't hit too much but come on.There is no way that so many people could survive it.As it is almost everyone is alive in New Vegas which makes exploring a tad bit boring. When you see a destroyed building and think "yeah,i'm gonna raid this" it just turns out one of the ridiculous factions is living there. And by the way the factions are highly unrealistic. In the previous fallout games people were struggling for survival while in this one they all wear wacky costumes and wage war... In the previous fallout game people didn't have time for such trivialities because they were to busy trying to survive.A delivering company, casinos? Do you think people would care about these things in such a depressing world with so little people? Oh wait New Vegas throws that "almost nobody survives" idea out the window and says YEAH,HERE ARE SOME CRAZY FACTIONS AND PEOPLE HAVING FUN IN CASINOS.I mean while yes,the story and how you could pick a side was a pretty good idea,it's not fallout enough. And if not in that it's in the little details. You can easily see plants and trees growing everywhere.Remember when you saw that the first time in fallout 3? It was awesome but now it's just a part of the scenery. Most of the buildings are left standing and rarely will you see someone in need for help.Oh and about the dark characters, the whole point of the characters in the fallout franchise are to contradict the sad scenery. What i mean is that they're supposed to be battling for survival, but they are also supposed to entertain you with their witty writing and fascinating actions.Fallout 3 is and always will be one of my favorite games while Fallout New Vegas just seems like the developers got their hands on the coding while they were working on a completely different franchise and said,HEY YOU KNOW WE COULD TURN THIS FRANCHISE INTO THE ONE WE'RE WORKING ON.Sorry for the long post,i just felt all of these things needed to be said.

Bethesda revived the franchise completely while still....giant block of text without spacing between sentences or use of paragraphs.

Your points about FO:NV having too many people and about there being too many trees is just wrong. FO 1 & 2 had both significant numbers of people and had a good amount of vegetation.

In each major local there were at least a dozen people and often several dozen - it's been over 100 years since the bombs fell, so probably 3 or 4 generations have been born since then. Humanity would have either died out, or adapted and then started increasing in number. (hell the Wiki claims NCR had tens of thousands of people, though I'll agree for all the iterations I'm okay with smaller screen populations representing a larger actual population, though this illusion is easier to maintain in the older format).

Heck just look at the growth of Shady Sands into capital of the NCR from FO1 to FO2, which occurred over something like 60 to 80 years. They had a population explosion with advancement in tech, population, leisure activities, crops, livestock, etc...

In the western set Fallouts the setting was a largely desert locations; hence far less vegetation in certain locals, but there are numerous areas full of growth, planted crops, and random plants growing all over. In DC, a swamp, there would be far more growth even if they'd been hit with nukes. Have you seen Hiroshima today? Plants certainly having no problem growing, nor are the 1.7 million people that live there.

No crops (or very few) makes no sense because people need to eat and while Twinkys may last for a while, they aren't enough to feed the post-apocalyptic population for 4 generations before FO1 or the 8 generations that must have carried on during the 210 years from war until FO3. They must have grown food and raise live stock as was shown in FO1, 2, & NV.

Bethesda revived the franchise blah~ blah~
I'm sure that japanese company(I can't remember the name) revived wizardry with "moe" doesn't it?

What beth doing is just making sequal of TES PA version.
it is same thing that what japanese company doing is making "moe" dungeon game that has nothing to do with original wizardry.

I'll be happy as long as they keep releasing construction sets with their games.

How often did we have the exact same discussion already?
I fear, there are more of the maround then we actually can fight. Does it mean we should give up hope though? No. Did the Spartans gave up on the Thermopylae? Did Gandalf gave up on the towers of Gondor? Did the South gave up even with the Union at Richmond? Alright ... that ones not such an great example.

But still. We are here, to fight! The good fight with our voice. You might get tired, you might get weary, numb, suffer from post traumatic stress dissorder. But you dont give up!
