What would you like to see in a true Fallout sequel?

It Wandered In From the Wastes
Maybe you think it is the right time to show them [trolls,Todd, console junkies] how a real true Fallout sequel looks like, then join this thread and give in your ideas!

From what I've seen Bethesda is gonna create a shit game, I wanna know what we, as fans can come up with. Lets take a completely hypothetical situation, lets say you decided what features were in, and which ones were out. How would YOU make F3? Bethesda is totally on the wrong way so Fallout3 as it should won't exist! I'm interested to see what people would do if they were in the drivers seat.

Would you go with hexagonal tiles, or not? Where should the storyline start, before Van Buren, directly after Fallout2, or many years after that? Would you make it 2D ISO, or 3D top down (including 1stPV? or not?)? How would you make the storyline? How big would you make the Fallout world, and where should the game occur? Would you go with the original F1/2 creatures, or would you expand on it and make other creatures spawned from the wasteland? How would you see the role's of your companions, the NPCs? How would you make the game as a F1/2 fan yourself? Long posts welcome.

If there's enough interest in modeling our own Fallout3...and if there is actually an enormous amount of ideas and material, then there could be discussion about implementing these ideas into a game which can be called a true Fallout sequel.

Some quotes which express the demand and will:

It's been said before and I'll say it again, the only way we are going to get a true sequel is if we make it ourselves.

It has been brought up so many times, I still carry the dream myself and would jump at any serious chance to do so. (and I actually have but that is something else)

So this is a thread that's supposed to contain everything that this forum is for?

Hello Bunkermensch,

You mean well but my advice is to start gathering people first and organise them, then start talking plans.

Of course not. As I pointed out, the whole thing has the background of actually implementing it into a true sequel. So I would call this an alternate Fallout3.
This forum is about "real Fallout3" suggestions which could be implemented by some other people like... Bethesda
So there is the difference, I hope this got clearer although my English is not that eloquent

Hello Bunkermensch,

You mean well but my advice is to start gathering people first and organise them, then start talking plans.
Well you have to start with collecting ideas. When you start first collecting people who have nothing to do, then it gets really bad.

So I see this thread as the possibility to start. It is about collecting the fundamental ideas. After that you can think of proceeding ^^
When you read this thread you are automatically involved,
here you can be creative and have fun giving interesting ideas! :D

Somehow, get ahold of whoever from Troika ended up with that Post-Apoc game engine they were working on, and try to bribe them with lots of money, and personal slaves if possible. Get the engine and source code, and work from there.

This is indeed not a bad idea. Imagine the vault dweller in his blue jumpsuit and the yellow 13 on the back running through this beautiful environment shown in that techdemo by Troika. Awesome!
Who would not like to see that? :D

It would probably be difficult to get it, though Troika is not Bethesda ;)
I think if the whole community wants it then it can get it! =)
But there are similar possibilities with opensource engines as well.

I don't think so.
FO costed 5million plus. What makes you think this will be less than say 500 thousand?

But I like the idea. It's about time we gother our resources and make a sequel that we would like to see. My proposal would be to be completely Democratic with it though. Gother ALL sites support for it and put up polls for every step of the process, especially for the story and were it evolves, cause this is something the entire community must embrace for it to be successful.

I've been working a lot on a mod for a game that drove me to buy models and create materials that might prove to be useful in the graphics department. My work is through Poser so I'm proposing a 2d game(ala tactics in graphics style), which takes too much time to get created, so that's the reason companies turn to 3d that's usually uglier but as fans, I think we ought to spare the extra time.

(If it's not 2d/TB/3rd person, I want no part on it though)

I'd start with the title. My proposal is Apocalypse, to avoid open confrontation with Bethesda, which might not like that as a move, considering it might reduce their possible sales(in their minds, as no PC gamer that loved Character(not action) driven RPG's like Fallout would play an FPP/FPS Fallout just cause it mentions Fallout in the title) and try to create legal problems(same reason that IPlay selected Fallout, instead of Wasteland 2. Also other materials, like the number 13 and such probably will have to not be present either, despite them going with 101 now.

Viewpoint proposal: 2d/iso, tictacs style
Combat proposal: tb with addedd stances, cover, etc.
Name proposal: Atomic Desolation

Well the engine and anything would not cost one penny :D
Troikas engine would only be interesting as a present to the community, otherwise there are engines like crystal, fife and so on.

Yes you got the point, this is the dream of exactly the sequel we want to play. The problem is that nobody so far is doing anything like that.
So we the community could do it and I am sure that only the whole thing of planning, being creative and making something of good quality within the community would be fun.

So as I can recognize from the first posts, 2D graphics seem to be prefered over 3D.
Good 2D graphics can really look a lot better than 3D, it is just nearer to art imo. Though you can do some fake 2D by just fixing the perspective to iso-like and can have beautiful graphics too.
FIFE could be the choice, it would have the huge advantage to be already a community product!

The name thing is interesting too! Well... Wasteland, Fallout, Apocalypse ... sounds reasonable =)
It should have something to do with PA, just one word like "Contamination" fe...
Numbers there are plenty of course. The char could be the man of vault 69, well that would run into some videogame porn maybe not a good idea :D

One important point would be storyline.
Ideas how to start a sequel up? Where to start? Who is the char? Difficult questions...

The lead programmer from Fallout 2, Jesse Reynolds works for Troika...well thats the last I heard about him anyways. Wonder if there's any way to get a hold of him...

/me breaks out phone book

Almost everyone who worked on Fallout worked for Troika. From the perspective of Fallout's engine (and quite possibly Troika's PA engine as well) it'd be much more interesting to get a hold of Tim Cain, since he coded most of Fallout's engine from the ground up.

BTW, are there any graphics, art and music people on this forum?
I have seen a lot of great artwork and too some music files on the frontpage since i visit nma. This community is quite huge and rather vivid, so focusing the powers on one project would be interesting ^^

That may be, but if you can't get in touch with them there isn't much of a point.
One of the biggest problems with fan projects is, is to find the people you need, so any, arts/graphics, script, and music people, please post when you hear this.

We've got all those different people (artists, modelers, scriptwriters, coders, even some musicians), but I think the most abundant resource here is writers. And, there could be a problem with that. Everyone would want the game how they write it. The writers would need to be people who can compromise, and work together. In fact, that holds true for the rest of the team, because if they can't work together cohesively, the game would be a mishmash of ideas and opinions, not a whole consensus.

So what your saying is, the greatest thing we lack is organization?

For modding projects, yes. It's always been a pain that there were/are so many total conversion mods, rather than just one or two huge ones with big cooperation platforms.

I would say organization, and most fan projects tend to have a full head of steam in the beginning, then die off due to real life.

Then there would need to be some sort of motivation. What if we made it a low cost game, like around $10 or $15? Honestly I have no idea what it would take to do this, I'm just throwin it out there, and it may be a horrible idea but I think it deserves some input.

That's pretty much it. Even Bethesda has us beat in that department, as they have finished games before. Most mods for games here don't get out of the early stages. We'd need to work very hard on this, and keep on it. Since we aren't paid to do this, it'll be a little difficult to keep people working.

Edit: Well, unless we all would get a take from the finished product (if it's sold), as the above poster implies. Money makes the world go round, and it helps keep people thinking "If we finish this, we'll all get a bit of cash". I know that that is what keeps me going at work. If no money was involved, I'd have called it quits weeks ago.
