Where is Fallout going?

First time out of the vault
During a short hiatus for some personal stuff, I replayed some of Fallout 4. To see if it was a different as I rememered, it was. So I pose the question, where is Fallout going? We've already seen a shift toward more action and less RPG mechanics. What do you think it will become in the future? Or will it go back to it's roots?

Honestly i think it's dead, especially for as long as Bethesda owns the Fallout name.

Unless someone who understands the core of Fallout gets the franchise, nothing would surprise me anymore. More aliens, more Lovecraft references, more wacky locations and weapons, 1-dimensional characters, no consequences and it'll be more of a shooter because dialogue and meaningful decision making is too hard.

Or will it go back to it's roots?
Not with Bethesda at the helm. They're the Exact wrong company to develop fallout games. It'll likely only get worse and worse with each installment. And the worst part is, unlike BOS, fallout 4 made money. Worse still, people actually liked it. So I wouldn't expect anything great from fallout any time soon. Most probably never again. Fallout has been put into its grave once before. Sadly I think that happening again is the best we can hope for...

The sad part is, its really not. Just comb through the many "how would you have done fo3/fo4" threads look at the stuff that just comes from off the top of our heads. I'm sure dialogue is an actual challenge, but adhering to lore, world building, and creating interesting new creatures and factions, is something nma members have proven, time and time again, to be quite easy. They're not trying. They stopped trying after oblivion.

With Obsidian directors saying they have absolutely no plans of making another Fallout game, Fallout is dead. The main game of Fallout is dead and gone, while fanmade spin offs will shine. Bethesda grabbed Fallout by the throat and tied a noose around it, essentially ripping its heart out, the roleplaying aspects, then replaced it with an artificial heart, funny and cool stuff, forever branding any other additions to Fallout made by Bethsoft to never be an RPG again.

Then Bethesda kicked the chair, killing Fallout.

I believe that this picture summarizes where Fallout's going rather nicely.

because its the right thing to do. it helps the integrity of the company. because if you don't you suck.

Yeah I know, but in Bethesda's eyes if they know it'll sell regardless it's not much of an incentive for them to put much effort into it.

Which is a shame because they were capable of making good games years ago, or at least that's the impression I get with how Morrowind is held in high regard.

they made two great games with huge flaws (Morrowind and Oblivion). then they dropped the bomb (ha puns) that was fo3 and realized "we don't even have to try you guys". Skyrim isn't the devil its just really really "meh", but the way they treat fallout is despicable.

maybe if people stopped liking and buying garbage they'd put some real effort into their games again.

Even if Obsidian or Interplay Reborn v9 creates the perfect Fallout game, with actual lore friendly storytelling and RPG mechanics it will be hated.

Why? Well, New Vegas was hated for its bugs (which is fair) but New Vegas was also hated for being too difficult and 'non-atmospheric'.

People want their character determined, they want a character some mook wrote, and they want to be the King of the World. People are literally complaining about being unable to become Elder in the BoS, even though you'd still be the damned errand boy. They want to be everything and everyone, they want zero consequence, and just become what they want to be.

I made a poll, and most people wanted a 'play after the end' rather than a slideshow telling you what has happened like New Vegas and Fallout 1 (and 2) did.

When people play as different characters they play as a good or evil. No in between. That is why, until hbomber made it clear: Fallout 3 is a FUCKING black and white game, which is just a slap to the face for everything Fallout 1 stood for. I mean the Master had justifications, did President Eden?

People who hate Fallout 4 are sadly a minority. Some people say they want better, but they are just jumping on a bandwagon. The hatred for Fallout 4 is now a 'circlejerk', and let's not 'bully the billion dollar company'.

So yeah. They cannot create a complicated Fallout game with decisions and consequences, if so, not many would play it.

I am more excited for the NV mod 'the frontier' than I ever will be by a new Fallout game created by Obsidian. That is because the developers of the Frontier can create whatever they want, while Obsidian has to come to terms with the 'bigger fanbase'.

And that's fucking sad.

You know what makes me sad? Obsidian practically offered their butts in exchange for making a new Fallout and Zenimax simply ignored the guys.

Well, as long as they do not do that, I will not give them one more cent. And yes, I was totally hype for this mysterious new BGS franchise, but NO. No more money for them.

Yess, I know that a single swallow does not make a summer, but what else can I do?

Edit: before someone said "bullshit" know that I did not buy the DLC's.
