Why isn't Obsidian developing this game?

First time out of the vault
I was just wondering why obsidian didn't try and buy the license for fallout considering the fact that most of the devs at BIS went to work there.

1) Most of the BIS devs never worked on Fallout 1.
2) Almost none of the Obsidian devs worked on Fallout 1.
3) The people who created Fallout formed Troika.
4) Neither company bought the license, either because they didn't find the money or weren't interested.

what games have troika made? I've never heard of that developer before. And wouldn't obsidian have had enough money considering their development history? Plus even though the dev's at obsidian worked on fallout 2 that doesn't mean that they wouldn't be skilled enough to work on fallout 3. At least it would be better than than bethesda(which is still a great dev company IMO)

Hardly the point.

Troika made Arcanum, Temple of Elemental Evil and Vampire: the Masquerade Bloodlines.

They made vampire the masquerade? Whoa I never knew that. Too bad they're dead, although I do hope that bethesda bases fallout 3 on the concept Troika made. If that happens then I'm sure fallout 3 will live up to its name.

They didn't do VtM, they made VtM: Bloodlines. Different game.

As it happens Bethesda developing F3 is a kick in the balls for Fallout fans, if Obsidian had been developing it it would have been a poke in the eye, so take your pick.

Well put Mortiz. :)

With MCA aboard and many of them having experience with Van Buren,I'd at least put more trust into them making a FO3 that's more true to the original then Bethesda which has no history with the franchise.(other than playing it)
That's so far the only thing that puts any form of hope fo FO3 in me,they have played and loved the game...so they should know what it's about.
But knowing and executing is unfortunately not the same thing...but at least it gives a -even if ever so small- bit of hope that it at least is playable...(I still don't think it will be,but as they say, hope is the last thing to leave man...or at least it's said in Sweden...)

Obsidian will be making Fallout 4, they have a history of making sequels to other people's games :).

Are you kidding? Does Obsidian have anything good to it's name? People are concerned about Bethesda, but at least Bethesda has a reasonably good track record. Obsidian has made KotoR II, which was not as good as KotoR by a long shot, Neverwinter Nights 2, which was a failure compared to the original...actually, that's all they've made. They're nothing special. I'm glad they didn't pick it up.

Er...no it doesn't. Not in making RPGs a la Fallout, at least.

It was a better role-playing game, though.

NWN2 was vastly different from the first game. It was focused on a single-player game, filled with choices and a responsive world. The first game's single-player campaign, on the other hand, was the biggest piece of trash I've ever witnessed.

I've never heard a more honest truth about that game. Playing it solo was like sucking on Sand Paper. It's fun for a few seconds, but then it just becomes very very painful, kinda like Oblivion actually....

Obsidian's really not that hot, they make mediocre games at best.

The potential is there, at any rate. They'll hit it big sooner or later, given they won't fall apart in the meant time

Re:

All Obsidian does is pick up off Bioware's leavings. If you want a game developer for something, look to Bioware over Obsidian any day of the week. NWN2 might have had a superior campaign, but check it out! It's a while since the game's release, but hardly anyone has made any noteworthy modules for it.

As for Fallout-type games, no one has experience making those except Black Isle.

A shame BioWare has been heavily recycling characters, plotlines, and quests since Baldur's Gate. It seems these days they do little more than plop down the same tired structures on a new setting for each game, perhaps creating a new combat system or engine along the way. Mass Effect is shaping up to be ridden with the same BioWare clichés, too early to tell with Dragon Age, though I wouldn't hold out hope.

Corsair, it isn't as if quality NWN modules popped up immediately either. I suspect the main problem is that many of the NWN modders are unwilling to move on, because NWN has had so much work done to it over the years. It will quite literally take years for the modding scene for NWN 2 to catch up to the sophistication in tools and resources that NWN enjoys now.

Obsidian enjoys quite a bit of untapped potentials, I hope the studio feels secure enough to try something original soon.

Er, yeah, neat.
Have you ever actually started Neverwinter Nights? Because that game did not only have a sucky, sucky single player campaign; it was also insanely buggy and ridiculously resource-heavy. It was, without a doubt, one of the worst game engines ever, with the exception of the Fallout: Tactics engine.

Also, saying a game is poor because the modders of that game have not been active is ridiculous at best.

You mean Troika. Black Isle never made a Fallout-type game, since all 'Fallout-type games'(essentially just Fallout and Fallout 2) were developed when Black Isle did not exist. ALthough Fallout 2 was published under the Black Isle name.
