I know you're a Russophile (which is objectively a thousand times better than being a Japanophile/weeb). I have family I've only ever talked to via online interactions in St. Petersburg and supposed a cousin somewhere in Rostov-On-Don that might be fighting in Ukraine, though I'm not 100% on that. That being said, once the war is over I'm planning on visiting St. Petersburg. If that war actually ever ends any time soon. And if I'm actually still alive and healthy enough to travel whenever that may be. If I find you a decent mail order bride to be your second wife I'll fly her to you. Oh and I guess I'll get you a post card or something.
Jokes aside, I do plan on visiting the family, as well as taking a trip to Volgograd. My grand uncle fought there according to my cousins, survived Stalingrad but died during the liberation of Ukraine (the uh, real one. Not whatever Putin is currently doing).
I learned that from my cousins. With that, and knowledge that my great(x2) grandfather was a White Army cavalry officer I figured I'd visit Russia and see some of the Great Patriotic War hotspots and museums. Maybe go to Volgograd and sit on the other side of the Volga and look across at the city. Wonder what it must have felt like getting ready to cross the river at night when the stukas weren't out running interdiction.
It's the least I could do. My grandmother was the last of our family this side of the sea who spoke Russian as a first language, and she stubbornly refused to teach her children, and thus I'm now having to learn it on my own. I specifically remember asking her as a child to teach me some words, only to receive a very accented "we're not in Russia." Only time I'd ever hear her speak Russian was when she was pissed.
