Would a dedicated melee button work?

Why wouldn't it?

I dont think theres any real reason to add one. Like a gun butt or something? alternate attacks? I could see alternate attacks actually, that would be pretty cool. one button is your normal attack, alternate is kick/butt/higher power setting/stab instead of slash depending on the weapon.

This would be cool. There is a way to switch between a melee weapon and a firearm without going into the pipboy though. I know it's not the same but still.

Nope because it makes the whole melee combat system/skill mandatory.

Well I assume most people build up the melee skill anyway. Mainly because melee weapons are common and require no ammo.

Why would it become mandatory? If you don't want to put points in the melee skill you just make jack shit damage with it, simple.

Well, presuming the next Fallout will be an FPS, (obviously) I think a dedicated melee button isn't best, but rather, alternate modes of fire.

Like in Fallout 1, 2, and Tactics, you could choose between a single-fire mode, burst modes, full auto, etc. Maybe even a 'both barrels' mode for those weapons with two.

But in the case of a bayoneted weapon I see no reason why "stab" shouldn't be an weapon mode. But hitting a enemy with the butt of your gun- even if it's a tough gun- is just murder to the weapon itself.

And let's not even cover the whole 'knife'mechanic in CoD and those military games- that has no place in Fallout.

In the PC version you can set hotkeys for items including melee weapons that can sorta function like a button or buttons. Were you thinking something along the lines of L4D? That was a nice touch but I don't want Fallout to develop into any more of a shooter than it already is.

I don't. I always go ranged weapon, because I don't find the idea of getting mowed down by brush rifles entertaining.

Then what would be the point of having it? If you are going to invest that heavily into Melee you might as well use a more appropriate melee weapon.

There should be a penalization for switching your weapon, even if you use hotkeys there should be an aniamtion of you storing your selected weapon and then pulling out the other one, a melee button for guns would allow for a quick Attack in close combat situations, maybe you ran out of bullets and the reloading takes too much time, of course hitting someone with your gun would damage it and also using the alternate attack button would allow for more diverse attacks with the other weapons outside of VATS ala Classic Fallout.

If it has become a shooter rpg, it might as well become a good one in terms of gameplay.

I would like a melee button and/or kick. The melee attack wouldn't switch your weapon to a melee weapon and wouldn't be very effective, unless you had a gun with a bayonette equipped. Yes, I would love to see bayonettes. Otherwise it'd just be a pistol whip or whatever. It'd make much more sense to be able to push/kick/punch enemies within melee range than shoot them. The attacks would still use the melee/unarmed skills of course.

joshua in honest hearts pistol whipped enemies
and i don't think your weapon would fall to pieces if you hit someone with it

i know that the weapon will eventually break but so does every weapon in fallout anyways

Yeah, it is really silly in the Beth fallout games that you can instantly change weapons, and even sillier that the weapons are automatically reloaded when you switch to them.

If Stalker, a game that to my knowledge had a smaller budget than Fallout 3 / FNV can remember how much ammo is in each gun, then there should be no reason why Beth can't do the same.

I dont think I would want one. I could see how it could be helpful, but I prefer having to wield a gun, and then switch to a melee weapon if I need it.
