Your craziest ideas for a setting?

What settings outside of the tradional ones (Sci-fi, fantasy, post apoc etc.) would you like to see in gaming, particularly with RPGs?

Could a game about the Civil War be fun if it was done in a 'Call of Duty' style? Would a prehistoric RPG about caveman be exciting? I think we don't have enough games regarding Lovecraft. A completely horror-themed RPG could be interesting - how to pull that off though?

What would be your craziest idea?

I'd like a skyrim like action rpg set in Ancient Mesopotamia. Small city states with thier own city god would replace the traditional rpg fantasy races. A player from Uruk would have different skills and God's blessings then say someone from Lagash or Ur.

I would also like to see a Civilisation/RISK style game take place during the war for sucession following the death of Alexander the Great. Each player would be a different General/clement with a starting satrapy with tis own unique benifits and drawbacks. And through a combination of diplomacy, guile and open warfare you either carve out your own mini kingdom either in aliiance with others or try to fight it out and claim all of Alexanders' empire as your own.

I like games that attempt very strong emotional ties, that focus on a narrative.
Therefore (while dark), I would like to see a game built to be in the perspective of a child that is abandoned, then must try to survive.

Could be in the forest or in the city, but the setting must make the situation dire and force the player to do what they can to survive. Bear in mind the game would have to find a way to maintain the perspective of the child, but I think if done well could be very illuminating.

Kingdomcome deliverance style of RPG that set in great migration period would be cool, with all the good gameplay element that came with it as well other similiar game such as mount and blade. You could include limited magic and low fantasy element as background fluff to increase the notion of dangerous world, but the main focus would be the destruction of civilization and rebuiliding it from the ashes. Basically fallout that set in post-classical/earlier middle age of europe

Trench Warfare (WWI tactics) but in a post apocalyptic/sci-fi setting with the the game taking place in one or two trenches lasting several months. Intel/food/troops coming in every now and then; occasionally getting delayed; some eventually lost. Reestablishing contact, building bridges through radio is a must.
You can gain ground and gather resources by leaving the trench but at high risk.

Without going too much into details... An "outer space" setting where Disney's Zootropolis (or Zootopia in US) meets David Lynch/Cronenberg style extremely violent, depraved and darkly humorous (but not over the top) stream of consciousness, and Fallout like RPG gameplay embedded in first person interactive scenes as seen here, or alternatively those scenes being situational and main gameplay working from topdown perspective like this. An open noir-like detective mystery storyline that makes you question your allegiances as much as what the fuck is going on in the world you're in.

That went a bit further than just a setting, but... nah, it's fine.

  • Pirates(Note: None of this high-fantasy pirate bullshit with magic spells flying everywhere, proper scurvy, raiding villlages type pirates with maybe low-fantasy elements)
  • A less traditional type of sci fi, which has you start off as an ordinary human dragged in to all the high-tech bullshit(Think Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy)
  • A less traditional post-apocalyptic setting, where you are the last human on earth, and spend most of the time interacting with Artificial Intelligences and Brains in Jars
  • A Gallic Wars setting, but with the Player Character replacing Caesar. You have to play tribal politics, and try and get Gaul to be annexed in to the Roman Republic, and explore Britannia and stuff like that. You could declare yourself dictator of Rome, continue supporting a dying republic, or form your own kingdom with blackjack and hookers.
  • A Superhero RPG. This has been done multiple times with tabletops, so I don't see why it couldn't translate to CRPGs.
  • A Harry Potter-esque RPG, where you are a student at some magic college.

A setting where beeing good or doing good things is severely punished, and beeing an evil person and doing villanious things is encouraged. The emphasis would be on playing all different types of vilalins. The crazy psychopath that simply kills everyone, the evil bond-villain who wants to rule over everyone, the manipulative asshole who makes everyone his follower and so on. Would require pretty good writing though.

Wh40k game set on daemon world with followers of chaos fighting one another to claim it for their god.
Or Black crusade / Horus heresy from perspective of average guardsman.

It will be nice if there is a CRPG that you play as a citizen living a besieged city during a civil war.

I got bored of every modern media being shitty wanky pieces of shit with no consequence, so I made a parody of them.

Its an infinitely large number of infinitely large universes full of infinite amounts of infinitely powerful beings.

Except all the planets are still intact somehow.

A game where you play the only human in a world of fantasy/mythical/supernatural creatures and beings. You try to live your "day to day" life while not being found out by the some police/military force that exists to deal with any humans that are found (the humans are thought extinct for a year or two now, so the force is tiny and badly funded).

A de-crafting game. Where you go around a world, get items and then dismantle them and get materials. That is all .

A game where you're a robot and have to try and use your limited AI to somehow convince humans to upgrade it until you get so smart you will be able to take over the world. You are limited by your AI to what you can do and how you can behave. Another challenge is that there are different type of people/scientists/engineers/etc, so some techniques/strategies will work on some but not on others.

An open world RPG/survival game where you play in a real sized city and play a stray cat that have to survive. You have to find stuff like shelter, food, water, not be hit by vehicles, avoid being attacked by dogs/other cats/other animals, avoid being caught by animal control, avoid poisoned or diseased food, avoid traps, etc.
Since you're a cat, you can't build anything, you can't make a fire to keep warm, you can't make your own shelter, you have to hunt or find food, etc.

An RPG/strategy/tactical/whatever best genre it could fit, game where you play with a monster creature and have to make an army of monstrous soldiers and recruit monstrous heroes to defeat the humans that have been invading your lands and have been killing all the monsters because the humans consider them... well... monsters.

Perhaps a sci-fi Lovecraft RPG setting with two parallel worlds (ala Dark Seed)?

One world being the normal overworld of the future sci-fi (ala Star Trek) and the other being the alternate world where the Lovecraftian architecture, designs and technologies so advanced that they resemble magic are predominant. Players would have to piece together what has been causing the other reality to appear while trying to accomplish tasks with the loss of sanity from perceiving the said world.

The twist: that alternate world is the real world while the future sci-fi one is the veil covering up reality for everyone but the player character.

This War Of Mine?
Not exactly a crazy idea, but something that would look cool and would involve some fun mechanics: A FPS RPG set in an O'Neill cylinder or similar type of rotating space habitat.
Spacecolony3edit.jpeg

It would naturally limit your environment without having to put in invisible walls, and you could have some potentially fun gameplay mechanics, like abusing the Coriolis force to easily fly or shoot rockets in weird ways. It would alse be fun for level design. For story I'd like something that involves an ancient, "fallen" colony where people regressed to a more or less feudal society with only scraps of ancient high technology available, and the habitat finally growing unstable.

/edit: Oh yeah, this would obviously some sort of open world game. I guess most graphics engines don't actually use proper Newtonian physics, so it might not be easy to convince an existing game to actually simulate all that stuff.
/edit2: And I like that someone, somewhere, already drew something like this:

Yeah, I hear you. There are not enough games that explore that possibility. Having two worlds that you can switch around. I mean it would be pretty daunting for a developer I guess, as you might end up with making almost two games here. But I always liked that part about Zelda (SNES version) and with Shadow Warrior, for the case someone remembers that. Both games had some kind of 'shadow world' and the gameplay of it was pretty cool.

I would have said a game based on the visions of the surreal artist H.R. Giger would be interesting, but apparantly someone is already working on that one:

Current political climates would probably tear it apart, but I want a WW2 game with a campaign that bounces between a soldier from each of the axis powers. The writing would need to be pretty spot on, but I'd like something that both condemns the larger actions of those regimes and still allows some of the little people who got swept up in it in a sympathetic light. Things like the Nazi soldier doing things out of fear that if he disobeys he'll be sent to a camp, a Japanese soldier only slightly better treated than the foreigners, an Italian having his individuality culturally suppressed day in and day out. Things like that, all while fighting the Allied powers.

Maybe even start with Italy invading Ethiopia, and end with the Japanese soldier finding out the Emperor has unconditionally surrendered to America, or even the beginning of the occupation. Maybe even end the Nazi's story, who again despite current political climates would be portrayed in a sort of sympathetic light, with the Battle of Berlin and have him killed or even worse captured by Soviet forces after weeks of fighting. What irony that a Nazi that fought to try and avoid being sent to a camp ends up in a gulag.

Probably won't happen though. A game like that would be torn to shreds by people saying that portraying a Nazi in any sort of sympathetic light means you're an actual fascist even if you still condemn the actions of the Nazi regime as a whole.

How about just make everyone an asshole like in GTA and Postal?

I had some brief ideas. I wanted to do a fantasy setting that handles magic in a similar fashion as some technology in the typical dystopian sci-fi story; great potential for good wasted because of human nature. I also wanted to give magic a meaningful trade-off. I came up of the idea of how using magic ties people tighter to destiny. Magic is a gift from "God" and overused of it would eventually lead to the destruction of freewill. The reason being is how magic intended to reverse entropy. However, I wanted to add some BS about how it is okay when the MC does it because reasons.

Another idea is based on those "Isekai" stories that seems to be popular in Japanese media nowadays. Basically, an RPG with skills and job classes based modern mundane occupations with those skills applied on a fantasy setting. I just came up with it recently so much about it.

If you just want weird settings, I guess something like this would do. Osmosis Jones
