Chris Avellone interview

But best title ever!
Taking a break from the reviews and impressions for a minute, we bring to you this fine interview with Obsidian's found and senior designer on Fallout: New Vegas Chris Avellone, done by the guys at Lightspeed Magazine. The interview deals with Chris's career and projects and obviously a fair chunk of questions are dedicated to the Fallout franchise. Here's a couple of interesting bits:
New Reno is a section of Fallout 2 that is totally non-linear, allowing the player to pit the town’s criminal factions against each other. What was your inspiration for this concept?

I got a 1.5 page summary of the location left over from the previous team: four crime families, a list of events that needed to happen (get Myron, find source of Jet, exposure to Enclave, etc.), and then I just started designing. I wanted to make sure each character build, skill set, and stat-build had something fun to do in town, and that was a lot of work.

[...]

Have you ever written a quest or character that you loved but for whatever reason could not implement in the final game?

Yep, it happened in Fallout: New Vegas. There’s a character on one of the trading cards, Ulysses, who was supposed to be a companion. Oddly enough, tearing him out of the game was almost as hard as putting him in because companion scripts touch almost everything (and he also was a complicated character in terms of some of the hooks into the storyline). Maybe he’ll come back at some point. I miss him.
...could you be any more blatant when you hint at future DLC Chris?

I love how Chris always tries to say that New Vegas isn't like New Reno, even though it totally is in so many ways.

At other times, you’ll want an NPC to showcase a particular aspect of the world…for example, in Fallout 3 in Megaton, the character of Nathan is clearly set up to portray how the common people of Fallout might fall under sway of President Eden’s propaganda, and that’s part of Nathan’s role in the story.

Couldn't agree more. I was replaying fallout 3 right before New Vegas and he is probably the only NPC I can stand in all of Megaton.

Except [spoiler:4105eb0de0]the lack of available quests for the different 'families'.[/spoiler:4105eb0de0]

kilus: i just saw your avatar and let out a loud barking laugh at work and had to stifle myself. holy christ.

also, what is this about exclusive dlc for xbox? that true?

There is some talk about that.
I understand some people are already standing by to port it to the PC in case we do not get it.

We would probably get it sooner or later, but in a GOTY package.

I am sick of these 'Exclusive Deals' MS is doing to promote their stupid console, DR2 fans are already screwed out of Case Zero and Case West and now this.

If M$ wants exclusive releases they should make these themselves, not screw out buyers on other platforms of additional content for multi platform releases they also would like to play.

Honestly don't know, I only heard from someone else, not the source.

Well BN, if its additional lands, quests and a secondary story I am always interested.

And I am not suggesting pirating.

What I want is that M$ quits with this 'Exclusive on Xbox' crap.

The first announcement of FO3 also talked of an exclusive, which meant the PS3 users had to wait a few weeks, that's all.

I was wondering who this Ulysses character on my playing card was.

Just flipped through them to see what he looked like. Maybe the problem was they didn't have any dreadlock hair modeled in time. :V

Are you sure that it isn't just Microsoft exclusive, meaning XBox and PC?

PC wasn't mentioned in their press release. It's unlikely that the PS3 and PC won't get the DLC though, it's likely that it's just a timed exclusivity deal.

"Few weeks"? You mean "ten months"... On PS3 the DLCs appeared almost a year after its release.

Keep yer britches on pardners, we will all get our DLC. Some may have to wait longer than others is all. Blame the suits.

Same here, I would never buy DLC just to acquire some new clothes, a new sixshooter or other useless paraphernalia (horse armor anyone?)
